United Nations and World Health Organisation call for drugs to be decriminalised

Is this as big as I think it is? I know decriminalisation is not what everyone should be after.
But to end penalties is a good thing.
Also I've read about somewhere, maybe NZ, where they've been recommended to decriminalise all drugs, but also regulate cannabis like alcohol and tobacco. So hopefully that's what they have in mind here!

As Trump wages war on legal marijuana, military veterans side with pot
... [V]eterans have become an influential lobbying force in the marijuana debate after sitting on the sidelines for years.

The 2-million-member American Legion this spring got involved in a big way by launching a campaign to reduce marijuana restrictions, which it says hurt veterans and may aggravate a suicide epidemic.

Ex-Jets player sues Jeff Sessions to legalize marijuana

Former Jets defensive end Marvin Washington is now tackling Attorney General Jeff Sessions — suing the head of the Department of Justice to decriminalize marijuana.

Washington is one of five plaintiffs in a new Manhattan federal lawsuit against Sessions, the DOJ and the Drug Enforcement Agency.

The suit challenges the constitutionality of the 1970 Controlled Substance Act that classifies marijuana as a dangerous substance, in the same category as heroin or LSD.

“Classifying cannabis as a ‘Schedule I drug’ is so irrational that it violates the U.S. Constitution,” the suit says. Meth and cocaine are schedule II drugs and thus considered more benign than marijuana under the law.

“The record makes clear that the CSA doesn’t make any rational sense and the federal government knows it,” said attorney Michael Hiller, who represents Washington and the other plaintiffs, including 11-year-old Alexis Bortell, who needs medical marijuana treatment for epilepsy, and disabled military veteran Jose Belen, who uses the drug to control his post-traumatic stress disorder.

Washington is suing because the CSA prevents him from obtaining federal grants to open a business that would allow pro football players to use medical marijuana for pain management in lieu of more addictive opioids.

Washington was drafted by the Jets in 1989 and won the Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos in 1998.

A DOJ spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sessions has said that he’s “not a fan of expanded use of marijuana.”

Not a fan of these guys till now.

Doesn't Session as AG have the authority to take cannabis off schedule I? Pretty sure he can and that would pretty much change everything.

He better hurry while he still has the gig. Not that I really think he might do it.

He would be the LAST one to do it... I really don't know why he is so hung up on the cannabis issue.

Yes, he can:

"Cannabis could be rescheduled either legislatively, through Congress, or through the executive branch. Congress has so far rejected all bills to reschedule cannabis. However, it is not unheard of for Congress to intervene in the drug scheduling process...

The Controlled Substances Act also provides for a rulemaking process by which the United States Attorney General can reschedule cannabis administratively. These proceedings represent the only means of legalizing medical cannabis without an act of Congress."

Seems kind of dumb to be honest, sessions has no control over the legalization of cannabis and this lawsuit won't help at all. Sessions is there to enforce the laws (which sadly are in place) until congress changes them or Trump were to issue an executive order (wish Obama had)

Like @nickdanger said, he'd be the last to re-schedule lower.
He would IMO, if possible, schedule cannabis as new Schedule 0 , or triple 000, where anyone caught with any
cannabis residue would be immediately executed as they are a very bad human being.......

His comments about cannabis are more uneducated/ignorant than if he were saying the world is flat. It's sad and depressing

I don't expect or think that Sessions has any interest in helping move cannabis forward. I was merely saying that he could if he wanted to. He has the authority and the position to do so, just not the interest. Unfortunately he is just another angry little man with a Napoleon complex, and I don't expect much help from him on ANY issue that concerns me. Frankly I expect the opposite.

I would be all in favor of Trump giving him the ax if I weren't very concerned about who he might replace him with, and Guliani and Christie top my list of concerns. Other than this concern, his firing Sessions might be one additional nail in Trump's obstruction of justice coffin...
