Burnt popcorn

I am familiar with the burnt popcorn taste of newborn ABV, but I haven't tasted burnt popcorn in a long time. I assume it's just how my body interprets whatever flavor is actually there, but I still think it's weird that I don't ever taste that flavor anymore, nor have I in a long time.

Anyone else like this?

Yeah, I honestly haven't tasted it in a long time, even when I roast my herb with high convection heat in one giant pull....it gets darker tasting, but never that popcorn taste I used to get from the mflb. I think my tastes have perhaps changed. Maybe I just interpret the same flavor differently now?

Interesting question.

I have the impression it disappeared when I stopped using conduction vapes and switched to full convection.

But I can't exclude a taste change either... hmmm...

Maybe we should dig our old vapes out and see if the popcorn is still there?

My first vape (Aromed) was convection. Its ABV gave me the flavor of burnt popcorn; at least in the beginning. Burnt popcorn is how I would have described it even if the idea had not already been planted in my head. In fact, it probably wasn't planted in my head.

I don't remember tasting burnt popcorn with any subsequent vapes (Arizer Air, SSV, Underdog, Vapcap, Herbalizer, Volcano, Mighty).

Wish I could dig out the Aromed, but it's evidence somewhere (of nothing).

I'm inclined to think my popcorn-taste-detection skills (regarding ABV) simply went away; that my brain just interprets the flavor differently now than it did when vaping was new to me.

Almost there...
My experience with the nasty popcorn taste was always with conduction vapes or any of the log vapes i have owned. I also think it happens with very concentrated heat, like log vapes and possibly the spacers you made for your Aromed.
Switched to full convection and now i only taste delicious vapor!

I never thought it tasted like that. When I first started vaping I thought it tasted like some kind of weird Chinese food and that was my cue to dump the load. That impression didnt last either.
It just tastes like toasted weed to me now. I sort of like it up to a point. Shitty vaped weed taste is still 100x better than smoking.

Couldn't agree more! Leave conduction - no more popcorn. Have a friend with a flowermate and CFX. Both bring back that good old burnt popcorn taste for me at end of load.

Popcorn from logs? Not something I've experienced. Maybe with heat touching load or heat up too high, but I use logs daily and don't have popcorn. Once load is spent (and roasty brown), I get nothing but warmth. No vapor, no real taste at all.

I use conduction vapes and I dont get a burnt popcorn flavor, ever

Well, that's good. Seems experiences of many others are different, though. Maybe it's your material or you're vaping at lower temps? Or, maybe you don't get that same feeling of flavor from a spent load roasting? Think you said above it tasted more like Chinese food to you. I've never tasted that, so maybe just a difference in taste buds?

I don't think it really relates to conduction/convection itself as much as convection will usually only roast/vape while you are hitting it and conduction will often cook whether you're hitting it or not, causing higher temps in the vape oven. IME convection will only go to a certain set temp because of this, and when vapor is done, we stop drawing so no more heat added. With conduction, it keeps roasting (and raising oven temps) until power is turned off. If you keep hitting when spent and still heating it usually imparts a less pleasant flavor. For me, that flavor is pretty close to burnt popcorn. For others, I guess it is weird Chinese food or maybe something else. Whatever the case, I think it safe to say that conduction will do this more, and more often, for most of us on many vapes.

Not that conduction is necessarily bad, or convection is necessarily good. Think there are examples of good and bad with each on different vapes with different techniques. Personally, I definitely prefer convection, though.

This occurred to me last night: Is popcorn even available outside of North America? Do Europeans even know the taste of burnt popcorn?

I've noticed that as well (from the same device, so not affected by switching from/to conduction/convection) and I'd just figured that my taste buds have become more familiar to the taste and can better differentiate between the two flavors now. Whereas before, when I was new to vaping, burnt popcorn was the closest analogue to the taste that my brain was trying to pigeonhole.

I haven't used the LSV in some time but I always got the burnt popcorn taste from it. It was also my first vape so it was a new taste to me. I will take a hit or two from a vape even after my combustion friends are complaining about taste. I can definitely get loads darker now without the taste bugging me.

Since I've been exhaling into a smoke buddy for a month now my SO notices the popcorn smell all the time now. Toward the end of the bowl I hear "smells like popcorn in here again" every time. Never heard it from her until the smoke buddy. She used to complain about the weed smell from the vapes.

I took the rheostat off my Nano to see what the top end heat was like and it pretty much torched the load in short order. While it didn't taste exactly like a burning MFLB (not exactly like popcorn) it was close

You could get an essential oil diffuser and some scents your SO would like, and let them enjoy their own aromatherapy session while you are using your vaporizer.

I warm up oil with the log vape regularly and the SO enjoys that. She doesn't eat popcorn but doesn't really mind the popcorn smell. It's better than the weed smell to her.

for me it is weed taste even if its dark the closer its gets to being done to more its tastes close to a joint without the toxic acrid smell of smoke... but the popcorn analogy applies... anyone tried to puff a real popcorn grain till it bursts in the bucket??? must be fun as hell...

that taste gets mitigated somewhat with a bubbler and water but eventually there is no way to hide it... maybe some type of terpene infuser to load the herb during vaporization at low volumes could keep the load more pleasant longer.. future vape modes with a micro terp dump LOL
