joesalamon...vaporizing is different than smoking. The high is going to be a little different and it will sneak up on you. After a few weeks, it will probably be all you want. Also, vaporizing is different in that it opens up new possibilities that few of us are aware of or understand. Instead of just smoking it and getting what you get, with vaporizing we can use different temperatures to unlock different chemicals and tastes. I am only just becoming aware of the vastness of these options, but am starting to enjoy fucking around with the variables.

TheTree: Yeah I have messed around with and without fan. I usually dont use the fan at all because my remote sticks for some reason... or well just doesnt respond on the first click. I have been gauging my hit and not hitting it as hard too, therefore not coughing and of course this is doing the job better.

ScientistRX: I have only been packing the elbow around 50-70%... dont really ever load it all the way to the top. Definitely have tried this Extreme-E hit, haha, just by messing around. I have been trying everything that has come to my mind. As for breathing, I take my hit, hold it for as long as I can, then I let a little out slowly, breath in, and I repeat this multiple times until I have no more visible vapor coming out.

stickstones: Oh I know that vaporizing is different. That is another reason I got one. I had smoked out of a volcano multiple times before my purchase and then some random box vapes, not sure. Volcano always worked the best and got me ripped. I want that feeling, haha. My friend has his volcano for a couple yeasr so he knew it pretty well and we tried like 10 differnt strains one day in it at different temps. It was amazing how you could taste it at the lower temps so much more. It was really nice how you can get so many different flavors. Come to think of it... usually whenever he ran his it was at a higher temp so that it was a nice thick milky bag but then he never reused it for a second bag. He probably cranked it up pretty high (never paid much attention as it was always running) thats why they were so milky and I had such a "stony" high. But yeah I love playing around with all the different settings. Which makes me glad I got the extreme for its functionality :)

To me there does not seem to be any advantage to vaping at such a high temp except for the visuals you get with the thicker clouds. The boiling points of Benzene and Toluene are 80.1 deg C and 110.6 deg C respectively so you will be getting those at any vaping temp.
To clear up this myth:

Marijuana does NOT contain any benzene or toluene.

These are byproducts of combustion. That is, they are created during the combustion process.

Back on track, I run my extreme at around 190-205

+1 on that.

On topic:

I'm thinking of making some mini-bubbler attachment for my extremes bowl - to whip. The only problem im having in design is how to set it down after you take a hit lol, without the water spilling, anyone got any ideas?

Great tip here from Steve at Arizer. Here's what he wrote:

I understand some people like thicker/more concentrated hits, something that can be achieved by 'packing the bowl'. The younger crowd and bong users often like a thicker/more concentrated (and smokey) hit.

That can be easily achieved with the Extreme and V-Tower, it's probably something I should of mentioned before, because the method I'm about to describe is very popular in some circles and extremely popular with those who collect 'pollen' in their (Wicca) Kif Box.

Instead of filling the bowl as you normally would, leave it empty, turn the heat up a few degrees higher than normal, finely grind your herbs, (or use 'pollen powder' from a kif box) and then fill/pack the (dome shaped) screen that sits in the elbow shaped glass piece. You'll be surprised how much you can pack in there, now set the elbow on the bowl as you normally would, let it 'sit and percolate' a few minutes and inhale, that will give you a VERY thick, concentrated, monster size hit . If you're using Pollen from a Wicca Box you're getting a super tasty, super concentrated amount of the finest part of the plant so you can imagine the effect! Blowing balloons with the screen packed is my preference, as the concentrated/thick vapor can be harsh; the balloon helps greatly with that giving the air time to cool.

I tried this out earlier tonight and got rocked! The first hit was super thick, the second was thick, then the third and fourth were about done. I didn't pack the screen all the way full, but left a little concave at the top. Afterward I emptied the cap into the bowl and it looked to be about half of what I normally use in the bowl. This may be the thickest AND most efficiently I've used the Extreme!
Hey Stickstones,
I've been an E owner for the past 2 months or so and have loved it. Can you elaborate a little bit more how this set up works. The dome shaped screen (the one that fits into the elbow piece) is upside down. Do you pack your herb into the dome shaped screen even tho it is pointed downward? Do you pack your herb above the screen in the glass part (then whats to keep it from getting into the bag/whip??)? Do you put the dome shaped screen face up in the bowl area where the herb usually goes?

According to this often quoted study, http://www.canorml.org/healthfacts/vaporizerstudy1.html , benzene and other toxins are byproducts of heat/temp, not combustion. And since the effects of these toxins (at low levels), which also include carbon monoxide, are primarily sleep inducing, the use of a vaporizer clearly validates the temp theory. Vapor in the low temp range produces a much less lethargic high vs. high temp vapor or combustion.

As for the boiling point of benzene, it is 80 C. But it, and its associated toxins are not present to a significant degree at the lower vaping temps according to the study. In fact, it says that benzene is not present in the vapor produced at 365. I'm no chemist, but it sounds like there's more involved in the process of vaporizing plant material than just the boiling point of a particular compound. I do know that the boiling point of a solution is higher than that of the pure solvent.

Rocketfuel...leave the setup as is, just pack the herbs in the screen instead of putting in the bowl. Pack it well enough so it sticks when you turn it upside down.

Ok so I have a question on cleaning my whip is almost black. I'm in college and live with two other heavy smokers so it gets used a lot haha but I was reading some of the eariler posts and y'all were talking about the sweet sweet honey. I don't really understand what it is and how am I suppose to get the honey out of the whip or the tubing without breaking or cutting open the tubing.

spooky and ven,

The information I posted is readily available at many sites, what I posted came from http://www.canorml.org/healthfacts/vaporizerstudy1.html. Max also posted this above. If you read the article it states

"The vaporizer produced THC at a temperature of 185C. (365F.) while completely eliminating three measured toxins - benzene, a known carcinogen, plus toluene and naphthalene. Carbon monoxide and smoke tars were both qualitatively reduced by the vaporizer, but additional testing is needed to quantify the extent of the decrease.

Although the study was not designed to detect the highly carcinogenic tars known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are thought to be a leading culprit in smoking-related cancers, there was good reason to believe that they were suppressed, since they normally form at much higher temperatures of combustion.

Significant amounts of benzene began to appear at temperatures of 200C. (392F), while combustion occurred around 230C (446F) or above. Traces of THC were in evidence as low as 140C. (284F)."

In researching your response to my posting I found this report done with a Volcano by canorml as well http://www.scribd.com/doc/294969/Medical-Marijuana-Vaporizer-Study (look at all the combustion chemicals in Table 4.. scary). Interesting that this report found no evidence of any polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons up to 218C.

I don't want to go off on a tangent from the Extreme thread, but since the Extreme is capable of 250C+ depending on your version and since joe asked, I thought I would post this. If you have a study showing no polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons being released from marijuana being vaped above 230C please post a link to the article as I would be very interested to read it.

Yeah I think we're about at the end of the leash for toxin talk on the Extreme thread. Anyone wanting to further the discussion-feel free to start a thread in the General section.

Maybe this belongs in the Science of Vaporization thread vtac created a few weeks ago? I would definitely like to follow this discussion, so let's keep it going over there.

First thing...read the sticky.
Second thing...do what the sticky says.
Third thing...play around and figure out what you like.

you have the 3rd gen like me.:D i use mine at around 200-210 C while mostly packing elbow hits.

Yeah I have to admit...elbow hits much more useful. they don't last too long, but they give pretty condensed hits.

So I finally got the E today my first thought is that it looks amazing! First I unwrapped everything then plugged it in and turned it on and let it warm up. Then I hopped up on my bed and broke the stirrer. Oops... When I packed up the first bowl it all spilled kuz the screen was not in there properly and popped up for some reason. Does anyone know any tips on how to get the screen to fit in there properly? I wanted to try the bag first because we already have a SSV and I really liked it. It seemed a little bit more tasty out of the E than the SSV. That might be because we turn the SSV up to high. But my only thing was that I really didn't cough out or anything like that I mean I feel pretty great but no cough. I started out on 220 C. I love it except the screen thing. In fact I think I'm about to have to use her again.
