So I've been thinking about what batteries I'm going to use in my Skeletor when I get it, and there's something I'm not sure I fully understand. Hopefully @Pipes or someone else can clarify. Does the unit perform differently using batteries with different discharge ratings? For example, will 30A Sony VTC4s provide a faster heat-up than 20A LG HG2s? I know they need to be rated for at least 20 amps.

I was originally planning on getting VTC4s because I had seen them mentioned here and figured the 30A rating was more than good enough, but if I can use LG HG2s instead I would be increasing capacity by almost 50%, right? (3000 mAh vs 2100)

Those ratings are for continuous discharge, not an issue to go over a bit for a few seconds now and then.

I don't think you'll need to pull more than 10A anyway, so 20A rating is sufficient.

There may be a slight heat up time differences due to internal resistance of the batteries.

The LG's appear to have a (marginally) higher internal resistance, meaning the voltage loss inside the batteries is slightly higher, and the portside will have slightly less power. Only slightly.

Like you mentioned, the HG2's have a (much) higher capacity, and that would be a much bigger advantage. besides, I think slower heat up time is advantageous too. It allows heat to spread in the tip and is a little more forgiving in time to char.

On specs alone (since I haven't used either of these cells), I'd choose the VTC4s for applications that require the higher discharge rate, say anything needing more than 20 amps for extended periods. Otherwise, the HG2s look like a better choice due to higher capacity, specially with a <10A load for a few seconds every now and then.

I have some samsungs, seem to work well.

BTW, I'm guessing the best spec to look at is the capacity the batteries have when their voltage gets down to 3v, when the BMS circuit will cut them off.


From the HG2 chart below, we see that to if we want to keep the battery healthy and avoid deep discharge (we are using a BMS, which cuts off at about 3v, so we are), the capacity available to us at 10A discharge with voltage limited to 3v, is about 2500 mAH, not the stated 2925mAh.
under these conditions:


HG2: 2500mAH
25R: 2350mAH
VTC4:1950maH

The closer you get to the rated current, the less working voltage come out when under the load. Due to the internal resistance which relate to the rating.
IMO, the 3000 mAh batteries are good if you get the right ones. I now always refer to Mooch's battery test results to baseline the ratings.
The VCT4's come up a lot because the can usually be found for very cheap and are quite reliable.
As you can see, the HG2s actually roll in at 18 amp rating.
I think any of these will work well but some will be quicker to clicker.... in the full charge range. :ko: I know, pretty lame.

Just make sure you purchase from a reputable source. They have tons of fake batteries out there that people get in trouble with quite frequently. IE: No ebay batteries or a random cheap source. The VTC 4's are one of the top counterfeited battery around.
Can't wait for the portside release! No more torches :D

Yeah, I'll be ordering them from IMRbatteries.com most likely. They're a reputable source as far as I know. Probably gonna go with the LG HG2s for the increased capacity.

I can't wait for this thing either, so stoked! I don't mind using the torch lighter but induction heating is so damn cool lol, it's almost like magic. :razz:

Testing it out is gonna be a blast! :science:

Just picked up 4 LG HG2's from IMR, myself. All seems good, as has from them in the past. They seem to be a good company to deal with both for the batts themselves, and CS.

All first batch Portsides will be done by weeks end and Skeletors in a day or two. :clap:
It's being a long wait but going to be worth it. I've used the time and gotten well into making second batches and ahead of schedule in that regard.

I shall be reaching out shortly to those involved. Start your engines.... ;)

Can't wait! Hope I'm in the first release of Portsides. I daydream about this almost everyday I'm in the car. Definitely whenever I'm on the highway for more than 30 miles. Have a subtle place to mount all picked out, just hope velcro will hold it well.

Just a quick update on my VapCup. Heh, its no longer a cup! :brow:

So My idea has adapted from stealth and portability to more of an over-engineered-as-fuck desktop/portable unit. It will be just over 4x4" in size, but with the added size I have added 16 addressable LEDs (4 dots on the bottom of each side), one 16bit LED neopixel ring, and one attiny85 microcontroller to control everything.

The transparent cylinder is the mini bubbler. Directly underneath the bubbler is the 16bit neopixel ring.

I plan on buying a sand-blaster eventually so that I can make the entire bubbler frosted so that it will diffuse the LED ring underneath. The whole thing should glow and I think it will look really nice.

The purple and green cylinders are the tubes that the vapcap comes in. One for vapcap storage, one for weed storage.

The larger black tube is a carbon filter (like a smoke buddy) so you can vape anywhere.

All of the electrical components are housed in the smaller sub-box, with the buttons and battery indicator up top so they're easily accessible. The cutout top left is the actual induction heater. The battery pack fits into the slot behind the sub-box.

I'm still waiting on a few parts to come in though! I had two induction coils in a row arrive without the actual coil, so that set me back quite a bit :cuss:

But yeah hopefully I should be getting in the LEDs and attiny85 soon! Gonna build a few prototypes out of some quarter inch maple or something to give to friends to test out.

how do you recharge the batteries?

Yep, so basically what @Derrrpp posted.

The Portside requires 3x 18650 batteries and includes a charging plug.

The user has to supply their own batteries.

The Portside is the portable unit which has a built in power pack for using detached from any wiring. The unit is made into an aluminum enclosure which has the VC access hole and DC charger input the same as the Jarhead, but also has a main power switch which is for safety in the case you need to kill power to the induction driver. The batteries can be charged regardless of the switch position. Unlike the Jarhead, this unit requires a special battery charger instead of a 12 volt supply. The supplied charger is a 12.6 volt 1 amp smart charger, which stops the charge cycle once battery is fully charged. Only use this type charger while batteries are inserted.

Batteries are the responsibility of the buyer. Flat top 18650 cells with at least a 20 amp rating are recommended. Pending rated mAhs, charging takes around 2 hours from exhausted to fully charged.

Note to advanced users: The Portside can be run like a Jarhead if batteries are removed. Meaning a high output 12 volt supply can be used, if batteries are removed ONLY!

Do not get charger and supply confused. Can have very bad results.
