Trully better, I never liked dabbing with a torch....enail make the process alot easier to deal with!
Word, I've been using the same torch and titanium nail for like two years now, so I'm ready for something new. I vape flower like 90% of the time, only now starting to get back into the concentrate game

Hard to beat that SiC Halo and d-nail slim base. I've owned a number of nails and it is light years beyond even the sapphire halo I had (broke) mostly because durability/cost of ownership/ease of cleaning. Cheap controller and coil pairing seems to be a non-issue, for me at least. I have been running my dhgate enail at 710F for a few weeks, wiping down with a qtip after a dab leaves me with a squeeky clean halo dish every time I return to the enail (approx every 2H). I haven't tasted a horrible dab in ages, always flavorful and efficient.

I've never had to clean the SiC except for when I ran out of qtips and had some crust building up, then I just ran it at 1000F for about 3H and it was back to new.

For what it's worth, my dhgate enail was also from carolongtechnology like @Bouldorado. I've had very good luck with this seller. Initially my enail was sent with the wrong size coil, they shipped the correct one the next day.

I have a dnail extended life coil that apparently is not compatible with my controller, so I am still trying to decide if I just want to sell the coil or eventually upgrade to an auber controller that's wired to work with dnail coils. Personally, I think the ideal "budget" setup would be a cheap dhgate/auber controller wired to be compatible with dnail coils, a dnail SiC halo and dnail slim base. Also a cheap dhgate rig.

Well thanks to the 420 sale I just ordered a SiC dish and a replacement quartz from TAG for 21 bucks total. Figure if the opening is too small it's reasonably easy to file down the Ti screw

TAG order came in yesterday.

Good news:
The SiC dish perfectly fits the dhgate nail and coil.

Bad news:
It broke before I could even dab out of it. Decided to torch it to clean off any potential cutting oil since it looked there was some residue inside. And then I put it under the tap to cool it down...CRACK! and it split into two.

Less bad news:
It was a clean break so I was able to piece it back together to try it out (screw holds it together). Definitely a much better dabbing surface than quartz. I can run the enail a good 100-150° cooler.

WTF? I Thought SiC was supposed to be durable!!

@herbivore21

Shouldn't SiC have better heat resistance than quartz? Or did I just get a bunk nail from TAG?

I think I guess the reply...cheap nail means less duability.... @herbivore21 is a fan of the D-nail products!

Although I'm sorry about your loss... I was thinking to get the TAG sic dish too but your experience and some comments I read discouraged me... and the sic Halo is too expensive for me.... fuck that's just a dish!

TAG SiC has been great for me, running it on a nail from TAG as well. @Bouldorado must've got a dud or something?

That breakage is due to excessive thermal shock. SIC, quartz and sapphire have their limits when it comes to thermal shock. While SIC can tolerate thermal shock much better than quartz and sapphire, it still is subject to break under such stress. Its one thing to heat a metal or glass material fast, but to cool it down must...great care must be taken. If you ever run water over your dish I would recommend it be as hot as can be to start and gradually change the temp of the water until desired. Never use cold water ona hot surface.

Even for q-tip tech in between hits I often use room temp water or even warm it up a little.

As for TAG vs HALO...I thought the differences might be negligible, then I listened to @SamuraiSam and @herbivore21 and they convinced me that there is enough marginal differences to go for the HALO. I am on a phone so perhaps I can elaborate more when I can type from a computer but the HALO has allowed me to cut my dabs in half. I couldnt believe how @SamuraiSam was getting such a big hit off a dab I couldnt even see on the end of his dab tool in his q-tip tech video but now that I got my own HALO...its bigger rips on the tiniest of dabs! Distillate has become dangerous because a tiny drop will choke me out.

Glad that you are seeing the proof of improved heat transfer by getting awesome vapor from half the sized dab! I agree totally though I hadn't thought about it in awhile.. I cut back on my usual dab size and temperature by a LOT when going from quartz to SiC. I used to take comparatively big dabs compared to my friends, but now when they scoop a dab up for me I'm like God damn dude, that's huge!!!

With regards to the breakage sadly experienced by @Bouldorado I would be inclined to agree with @nosmoking and the fact that the SiC was thermally shocked by heating it aggressively (with a torch, likely beyond a dabbing temperature of mid 500's to mid 600's instead of a heating coil) and then by cooling it very rapidly in water, thats enough to damage almost any material. If the dish had been let to cool in air, it most likely wouldn't have shattered. SiC is NOT like quartz in that it can be dunked into cold water at 1200F- thats a pretty unique property that quartz has.

FWIW I do clean my SiC dish with water, but only with a cotton swab, and only at 'coil' temperatures.

I find the steam cleaning of a wet cotton swab completely cleans any residues that the dry side didn't get out. I've no hesitation suggesting this as I've often put so much water in a dish from 520-900 that you can watch a real neat demonstration of the Leidenfrost effect as a ball of water rolls around the halo for a long time before vaporizing.

Yeah apparently I misunderstood the properties of SiC. I read about people saying it has better heat shock protection and can better withstand drops than quartz. So I took that to mean it was nigh-indestructible, a la titanium.

Qtip tech is using a wet qtip to clean the dish?

Sorry for the late response, but yes, Q-tip tech is cleaning the dish with a Q-tip after each hit. I do it like @SamuraiSam and use one side of the qtip dry and one side wet. Dry first to mop and then wet to steam clean a little.

I'm curious if anyone can assist. I mentioned my predicament in the henail thread, and although I do love my portables I certainly want to get a standard rig set up minus the torch.
If you guys were starting from scratch, what would you go with on a limited budget (enail, glass, etc)?
The whole 9 yards......

For <$150, you can have everything pictured in this thread: Dhgate enail, DHgate glass, and thick ass glass SiC dish.

I highly recommend the SiC dish- in terms of flavor and efficiency, it's a massive improvement over quartz.

You can save about $20 by getting a smaller or simpler rig- there are a ton of options on DHgate.

Most expensive part was the enail at $105. Might save a bit by shopping around, but look for the kind pictured here with the screw in dish (that'll allow you to use different dishes).

And the DHgate enails are lasting too? They're about 80 to 100 bucks cheaper than the branded US ones

I've been using the same setup except for my nail for over a year now and haven't even needed to replace the coil. My enail is on about 8 hours a day.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a dh kit (enail, glass rig, etc) for about 153 plus adding an extra nail for good measure....still under my 170 max.
Is there a typical preference between 10mm (flat), 16, or 20 mm coil (the wrapped, coiled style)?
Again, I have my portable henails but no matter what I read I can't find a general consensus?

If you're into bangers the 20mm wrapped coil works fairly well but my personal preference is a flat coil with a dnail halo and base.

If you get a setup with a flat coil you can very easily upgrade to the D-Nail SiC Halo & Slim Series base down the road.

I'm definitely all about the flat coils as are my friends who posted above.

Barrel coil vapes do not generally get the heat to the base of the dish so well. I don't dab on the sides of my nails (next gen e-nails - SiC and Sapphire - are not well suited to this), I dab on the floor of the nail dish :2c:

Now I read somewhere that flats burn out faster? Any knowledge to support this or was it essentially just someone hypothesizing?

Yeah I don't think that's true. Flat coils are the same as a barrel coil, just a different shape

Agreed. I'd love to see what proof those claims stem from(I've heard that before too).

I bought my Auber rdk-200 with flat coil 16months ago or so and have had that thing run 24hrs a day many, many times. It's still going strong.
