@Aezhenn it's brass shim stock. I got a pack and have been using the 0.85mm, 0.03".
I've also been looking at sterling silver for the accents. I can also get silver tubing in a couple of handy sizes.

Those aluminium accents are well travelled @nickdanger.
According to the tin A&W Texas, to the UK and back over to the States.

On the subject of cross Atlantic travel.....
I got a nice shiney green envelope today, I now have some spare parts and can also offer complete stems.

George and the VC team are a fantastic bunch of people to deal with, but I'll save that for the main thread.

I like the platter very much.
What if you put an indentation dead center, sized for the VC so you could jam the tip in there to fill it?

Didn't have this finished earlier hence the back to back.
The last couple of days have been messy for a reason.

Scottish Yew shallow bowl, herb platter. Any and all suggestions and ideas welcome.
4 1/2", 114mm diameter, and 1 3/8", 35mm tall.

@ArthurJ I like the idea of that and had thought about putting a small dimple in, I used a button chuck to turn that one. I've a set of aluminium ones, same set up as these homemade ones. These are scary @stardustsailor, no room for error.

My idea involved me using the button chuck and offsetting the dimple in a shallow flat bottom dish. Both images lifted from the net.
Not like this bowl, but it shows the principle.

When I get a chance I'll get something together.

Said 'chances' usually turn out to be the weekends.

The supplier I've been using has been great. I asked them if they could send me out some dark Cocobolo as the previous blanks were a little light in color for the pieces I had to do.
They sent me a blank twice the normal size and a smaller piece.

Some blanks you look at and say to yourself 'Please still be there when I've finished, please.'

Well today I was saying that, and Mother Nature stepped up for me.

You can see the small pip or eye where the curves in the grain meet, well look what happens when you turn it over.

I like that idea a lot, shallow bowl, off-set dimple, a dark wood that would pair nicely with my walnut wood scents would be particularly neat.
Not that I'm trying to sway you in any particular direction, but I would be most interested in such a piece.

@needalift I got a really nice dark brown piece the size twice the size and was happy, then I span this orange blank in my hands and this really nice 'feature' was staring at me. I nearly didn't turn it I was afraid it was going to disappear.
Love Mother Nature warts and all.

It started out all bright orange then all this pink appeared and I wasn't sure, it still looked great.
Most of the orange has gone and the pink has turned a nice tan color. The 'face' is orange, Indian Summer nearly.

The bit I like the best is the ends. The ends have enough orange left in them to make it look stained, like an antique cigarette holder stained. I'll get some more pictures.

@ArthurJ I think the one in the foto is walnut, I'll look into it a bit more.

@GreenHopper I love that picture, thank you. PM me some pictures and dimensions.
Not sure how it would work as the blanks are all pre cut to size, but I'll have a Google around and see what comes up. If I can't get acrylic the only other way would be for me to talk to this guy again

He was very easy to deal with and I didn't make him any the wiser as to why I wanted stabilized wood, it is Blighty and all that chap, he offered to do some pen blanks which I may take him up on.

Or as I meant to show you all earlier, how about something like this. I dropped an M with @Ruta and whilst he put it thru his paces I sent him off on a wood trip, needless to say the M did it's job.
I'd want to use the tannin/ferric acid method of ebonizing I've tried before..

This one at 1:18, freeze it there

And then myself and @RastaVapa discussed this idea, his electronics background means he's a bit safer than me

No worries man, I'll chuck up a few details in a couple of weeks when I'm back home and can measure the piece. I'll see if I can throw a wire frame sketch together as well, see if the specs fit or not.

Thanks fella.

Sundays are my cleaning days, all my beautiful woods get a thorough cleaning followed by a butter rubdown. This weekend was special so the woods get an extra polish so they can be bright and beautiful for the dinner party

Yakitori party for Mother's Day, I'm back in my wife's good graces;);). Next order PP, I'll be getting the vong I had to pass up:D

Probably not for long when she reads that.

Killed 2 birds with 1 stone today, I changed the pitch on the 80mm twist I'm trying out and made a prototype telescopic at the same time.

The tighter twist looks way better than the first one I did. The telescopic will need a bit of tweaking but it works, I just need to change the way the MP sits in the main body.

You can see where I went too deep and it's scalloped the edge.

Thanks for the patience people, we're getting there.

@GreenHopper simple paint and dye techniques but what a result, and I had another thought which will make the cloudy one even better.

As a reminder to myself I took a picture of what some of the stuff I've done looks like all Ti ansd SS'd up, one or two hours went into this lot.
Half way thru this list and it's a nice sight seeing less black, blue and red on my white board.

All being well this Saturday will follow the path of the last few and I'll get to try out an idea which I've had in mind for a while.

Have a great weekend.
