The Nomad From Morwood

Another day in the shop...

Dimensioning and hand planing the surfaces of the wood body. To fit into the various jigs I'll need to put this into, all dimensions must be within' .002", around the thickness of a human hair!

These corners have to be perfectly square. This is where the cube-shaped module will be inserted. I don't want any gaps.

Countersink drilling the heater module base plate.

Tapping the 1-64 screw threads into the walnut body.

NPhuBLd.jpg

After polishing the screw heads, they lay perfectly flush with the surface of the brass plate.

Time for heat colouring the screws.

T1tBKUI.jpg

Seems like this grade of stainless doesn't take as well to heat colouring compared to the steel fasteners I did my previous tests with... hmmm. I believe I'll have to bake them at temp. for a longer period of time to get the deep blue/black colour I'm after.

After screwing the plate down onto the wood body.

This is still in its rough finish stage. The brass plate will later get some machining, and then polished on all sides, to get ready for a dark brown patina. With use, the golden edges will wear through the patina... should look sweet!

For those wondering, I am using RoHS compliant lead free brass.

Seeing these photos really messes with your sense of scale.. but this thing is tiny!

Not only expert craftsmanship in wood/metal working but photography too. Nice pics fella, they all look amazing.

Its fascinating seeing the attention to detail you are putting into this work of art.

Very much looking forward to experiencing one of these first hand someday.

@Dan Morrison, I haven't yet seen any of your work, aside from your posted pictures, but it's obvious you love what you're doing. This being the case, I would like to see these vapes numbered and signed. Just a thought, but I hope you'll consider it, if you haven't already. I'd be proud to display one.....and use it, of course.

I'm excited about several wood vaporizers that are coming out recently. But, I don't think any will compete with this one on design or craftsmanship. Oh, and my wife says she wants an early number (really, she said #1, but, yeah, she knows you need to keep that one).

@GreenHopper ahah! Oh man, I used to be so into tetris.. and I only just realized that this looks like a tetris block! hmm.. perhaps there is some name inspiration in that.

I've also been kicking around the name, M1 for Module One.

@RelaxedNow , Thank you! :) And I do plan on numbering them, and they'll all get some sort of signature stamp, like the Okin boxes.

And I guess I can share this now.. my apparatus for heater testing!

Rather crude, I resisted the urge to make it look too fancy. Everything is arranged much like how it will be in the final vape, but.. obviously on a flat board.

In the mysterious blurry background you can see the heaters outer shell. What's inside you ask?! That's a secret for now. But I will share it at the end of all this.

I am REALLY liking the heater. It's taken a long time to come up with, both the idea and how to actually make it. Just so excited!

Name Suggestion: The Bokeh

"In photography, bokeh (originally /ˈboʊkɛ/, /ˈboʊkeɪ/ BOH-kay — also sometimes pronounced as /ˈboʊkə/ BOH-kə, Japanese: [boke]) is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. Bokeh has been defined as "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light"

The Bokeh will render you out of focus whilst you are riding a point of light :D

Another Name Suggestion: The Odin

Odin (Óðinn) is the supreme god of the Germanic and Norse pantheons

As this is going to be the God of all vapes :brow:

Also sounds similar to Oakin (see where I'm going with this :D)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Alternative Name Suggestion: The Timbra

Timbra = Old norse term for build, timber, construct.

There's an Odin named vape out there already... By topbond. :p
Sorry for not being constructive. I thought about dropping a name too - but then I found Dan is giving birth to this and will find the perfect name... And it will reflect his thoughtful approach to creating a very personal vaporizer and mixing all kinds of arts and merge them into it. No one could imply all this in a name like the creator's self could.
Anyway, just my view. Don't want to discourage anyone from name dropping. :)

Edit: Farid, you beat me to it. :p (Damn, I'm a slow typer type...)

Good point both of ya, I knew about the 'Odin', just having a slow start to the day ;)

Going to keep making name suggestions though as....well it's fun

Ooo now I really like the sound of the word 'Tetro'.

Unfortunately according to www.wordhippo.com the meaning of the word doesn't really align to Dan's style.

Are we caring about meanings?

Well he just said M1 for module was his latest thought, so I figured this unit might could be different. Certainly more marketable on paper me thinks, but yeah why my first suggestion was something meaning vessel...

Though Tetro does sound damn cool imo and also pretty Blade Runnery doesn't it?

I do like the way is sounds

EDIT:

A slight alteration to 'Tetra' as in 'tetra-hydro-cannabinol' would be cool :brow:
