I know a lot of the people on here are older, so I don't know if they like to watch it, but does anyone like watching anime or cartoons? I personally like anime with fighting scenes and stuff, and when I'm vaping and watching it's the coolest thing ever, I have to rewatch scenes like 8 times to see how cool they are haha.

Does South Park/Family Guy/Simpsons count? If so Terrance & Phillip and Itchy & Scratchy segments are highlights.

Venture Bros and Boondocks are pretty much all i watch these days.
Although I can say because of my Kid I did get caught up in watching Avatar the Last Airbender. That actually surprised me, enjoyed it.

Love me some cartoons. Not a huge anime fan but I think Miyazaki is amazing. I'll watch anything that guy makes. Other stuff I dig....South Park, all Seth MacFarlane shows, Boondocks, Justice League and I can't forget all the classic Warner's and Hanna Barbera stuff. Pink Panther and Woody Woodpecker are the shit too.

I absolutely hate 90% or more of anime and cartoons, especially modern stuff, but love the other 5-10%.

Beyond Ghost in the Shell and Samurai Champloo there is Akira, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Beebop, and anything by Hayao Miyazaki to name the classics. Basically if it was written for adults and isn't half soft porn it's usually at least semi decent, but like all creative content it can fall anywhere on the normal curve of quality. Same goes for the quality of all the adult swim shows, but I can't really be objective about those since they were a staple of my college years and everyone from stoners to jocks watched them almost nightly.

The craziest movies from asia aren't animes anymore though, check out Oldboy if you want something slightly insane and very disturbing. I could talk for hours about TV or film in general though so I'll shut myself up. :ko:

This thread needs some :mmmm:

Has anyone else seen Miyazakis newest film Ponyo? Very nice interpretation of a classic, can't wait to see what his next couple of films are like! :D

I took my wee one to Ponyo, She loved it, and I thought it was entertaining enough to keep my interest.

the detail and character of all the hand drawn animations impressed me. When I have kids they will definitely be well acquainted with his work, hopefully there are some english dub versions out there.

as far as I know you can get all of his work with english dubbing. Some of them come with both english and the original japanese as options. I recommend watching the movie in two sittings, each using a different language, there are subtle differences in the dialogue. I have every DVD except ponyo, that gets released in march.

Yup. There's a great German movie, not animated, that came out a while ago called Das Boot, about a German sub and it's crew during WWII. I saw it both dubbed in English and in German with English subtitles and the German with English subtitles was soooooo much better. It's that whole, lost in translation thing going on because with dubbed movies, the acting done by the voice over artists better be spot on, 'cause if they're not, it won't work.

and when dubbing english over something they are limited to only using the time the actor has their mouth open, so sometimes they have to change lines entirely. Das Boot is a great movie too.

Thats good to hear about the english dubs, I got mine when I was overseas so it's all in original japanese with english, chinese, or korean subtitles as my options . My little cousins just couldn't get into the subtitles even though they can read well enough to follow everything. Das boot is an awesome movie, I started getting a little claustrophobic towards the end though ;)

In anime changing lines in translation is painfully common in the older stuff, to the point where the actual message or intent of the show is changed (aka simplified) significantly. I remember one scene about democracy in an old anime that I watched in english dubs afterwards and they went from talking about democratic vs. autocratic political theory to how they wanted to beat people up and cause trouble in the subbed version. The whole interaction was changed into a good vs evil scenario instead of dealing with the philosophical differences that people are willing to die over. I guess the Japanese think we're all less mature than their children. :uhoh:

Dubs are the worst, they edit a lot of stuff out, and it's a bad translation. Same with subs, each ep is subbed by someone else, it bothers me :(. Yeah, you're right about soft porn, sometimes it gets redic, buti t's still funny.
