I agree with @mephisto . These vapes are like $100 plus change. Seems like they are doing due diligence to make things right. No need to attack them, especially for the people who bought them on the gray market. I work for a company that has parts made in China that are assembled in USA mostly, but a small amount are made entirely over there. We have seen some of these parts out in the wild - not from us. Some of these factories sell off excess to whomever they want to, or make limited runs of other people's designs. It is hard to stop this sort of thing. It just happens. The OEM shouldn't be responsible for something they never sold and profited from IMO.

I dont see any attacking, just concerned customers, we use these devices to try and be healthy so if the materials used aren’t safe then $100 is far too expensive, who knows what health issues could come from breathing in random melting plastic, i value my lungs and those of the community that’s all. i don’t care about the $50 i spent just about possibility of thousands of people risking their health using an unsafe device

maybe if that’s the case change your forum status to something other than manufacturer
Maybe you could show a little bit of respect to other members?

So, I haven't bought one of these devices yet, but have been very interested in reading this thread and have come to a conclusion that owners and Vivant may be talking past each other in discussion of plastic used in the CU/MP and plastic smell.

I see where Vivant has said that they are seeing only a 1-1.5% defect rate. I can only assume this to mean that only 1-1.5% of units shipped have developed cracks in the top unit.

But that doesn't seem to be the main thrust of the comments (including ones about recall) which seem less associated with a specific part failure (crack in CU) than with the quality of the plastic used in the CU/MP and whether this plastic is sufficient and appropriate to its use.

To me, plastic that turns white on exposure to ISO and plastic that for all intents and purposes looks like its melting on the CU right above the oven, is a material issue and not a manf or mechanical design defect like the CU cracks.

To me, this definitely raises suspicion of material selection issues which Vivant has NOT addressed except in the most general way (we use it too, we are caring people, yada, yada, yada...everthing but the exact type of material used, yeah?).

I find often with CS (vape company or otherwise) that upon some failure or short fall by that company, the CS personnel think its important to tell me that they are "sorry". They will tell me they are "sorry" multiple times while not actually solving the problem.

They all seem very taken aback when I express the view that I have no interest in their emotional state, sorrow or otherwise, but what I do what is a resolution (and often prevention of a recurrence). I'm sort of getting that from Vivant....they are sorry, they are sympathetic, they use the device too.....and my initial reaction is "so what, what we want to know is what fucking plastic are you using that turns white upon exposure to ISO and which melts when placed near the oven"

Ok, I'm out of here before Stu starts spanking my heinie for busting vendor chops too much.

This vape is the "unicorn" alot of us have been looking for..those who buy something new always take growing pains that come with a new product ...luckily the issues seem like something the manufacturer can address and hopefully update/correct...I have been patiently waiting to purchase another portable ..I have held off on purchasing many units since so many new things have come out ..I was hell bent on a cf or cfx up until this thread started and am thankful to those who took the plunge and have been sharing there pros and cons of the alternate..always remember to be patient, allow companies time to correct issues and be an educated buyer ..there are countless threads on this site and I can bet there a large majority of them all start with similar story when a new device first launches. (Working out the kinks)Be thankful for this site and those who make the effort to inform us both fellow members and manufacturers...moving on..I have a fever for some more milk shots of this device through glass..those who have solid units get to posting please...lol

Hey all. I got the Alternate last week, used it at 400 degree 5 times and no problems. However, once I used it at 428, that is when my cooling unit started to deform and gave out a plasticky fume, which I am sure I inhaled it in the process. I seriously think their plastic supplier had a bad batch of material. Either way this needs to be fix.

I contacted Vivant regarding my problem, but unfortunately they cannot do anything about a replacement cooling unit because I purchased mine from a ebay seller vapormist (who is an employer for joyetech), even though mine is authentic and was brand new. This wasn't the response I was hoping for from the manufacturer, but that's another story.

Ive contacted the eBay seller regarding getting a new cooling unit, but I have yet to get a response.

If this eBay seller doesn't offer to send a replacement cooling unit, I will have to return the alternate for a refund, and will buy something else that can handle the heat.

The vaporizer itself is great, and I would definitely recommend it if it wasn't for the melting plastic issue I had. But as of right now I would hold off on it after the crack and melting issues are straighten out.

FUCK CANCER TOO !
They have stated previously that it is glass filled polycarbonate. That is a thermal plastic rated up to 263 or 265f. I can't recall which

That may go a long way in explaining the cases of MP degradation! Maybe a engineer miscalculated a temp measurement somewhere and once the vape is used at the higher temps then we begin to see evidence of plastic deterioration? Let's hope Vivant can resolve this to the satisfaction of all!

The Vivant Alternate seems to have completely disappeared from DHgate. Heaven_Gifts don't have stock anymore either.

Perhaps due to the ammount of refund requests and this thread they have been taken off sale . hopefully this issue can be rectified as the alternate does work well ( when its not melting or crackin or resetting from drawing like a man)

Hi @Vivant , thanks for engaging with our community so thoroughly
I bought my Alternate from Heavens gifts (I wish I'd gone for PIU or you now though as it's taken nearly a month since payment, and still no package!) and would like the opportunity to purchase a new revised mouthpiece from you when you release them.
I agree that you cannot, and should not be expected to warranty a unit which you did not sell me, and made no profit from, but I would like to BUY a safer replacement when they are released.

Is Vivant likely to offer this to folk like me who bought elsewhere?

Idk, but they definitely SHOULD sell it separately too in my opinion. At this point it seriously couldn't be anything but a materials issue. I might be keeping mine below 400 until they get a replacement out.

oooops, deleted after I saw Stu's thread above.

Not sure why materials can't be talked about in vaporizer threads if material is a valid subject, but the rules are the rules and that's that.

Cheers

It's with deep regret I inform the FC community that just after 5 days of use with my new mouthpiece, the ring around the screen just above the bowl has begun to melt.

I'm really unsure what to do at this point. Two duds in a row and in the span of two weeks? I'm debating on contacting puffitup again, but what should my expectations be when I know whatever replacement they provide at this point is going to fail in short order? Is it time to ask for a refund?

I love this device. I simply need it to be reliable and safe.

Unfortunately I also had a second unit sent to me via PIU (first one smelled and tasted like plastic) and am sorry to say I had to return it today. I couldn't get passed the plastic taste/smell and the underside of the CU/mouthpiece was starting to deform on the first unit.
I wanted to love this device but until those issues are addressed I'm gonna take a step back for a bit.

In your case you were able to return the item to puffitup? I've emailed them to see what recourse I have. I know that Vivant says that this is not as wide spread an issue as it seems, but seriously, two for two failures within the mouthpiece makes me want to shy away from this product. I'm nearing buyers remorse at this point, but I'm trying to be as patient as possible.

Yes they allowed me to return it which I am extremely grateful for. Randy at PIU is a standup guy and has always given me outstanding customer service, often going beyond what he needs to.
Maybe I'm just really sensitive to the smell/taste but no matter how much I cleaned it, I still tasted/smelled it.

Man, sorry to hear you guys are having complications.

I loved my Alternate since day one. It has found it's way into my DAILY rotation.

FOR ME.... I've been using my Alternate daily since I got it (A month or so ago?)and have had NO issues. (Knocks on wood)

I use it through water almost exclusively and at 410°F. (Haven't been higher than 410°F cuz I be ded). No melting, no cracking, no fumes or plastic taste. Again, I use it daily (about 2-3 bowls a night).

Admittedly, I have a little ocd with all my vapes and brush/wipe them after each use. My Alternate looks pristine. I've used 91% iso to clean the mouthpiece/top cap once a week and have had no issues with what has been described.

With ANY new vape there are bound to be some defects or issues that arise. Find me a company that doesn't have issues when they first roll out a product. Each and every "new vape" thread on FC will have people complaining about issues. But not every company is as involved as Vivant/Emily so cheers to them for "showing their face" and responding. They really seem to "care."

I hope you all find a solution that makes you happy.

Cheers!

I just heard back from puffitup and they're again offering to replace the mouthpiece. I'm debating on how I'd like to move forward at this point. Who knows how long it'll take for Vivant to correct this issue and make new mouthpieces available? My concern is that it'll be far enough out that I could be stuck in a cruddy place for a prolonged period of time, replacing mouthpieces every week.

To return or not to return? That is the question.
