Underdog Log Vapes

Lo and Behold! The transformative power of Vapor.
I use this New Guinea Rosewood one I had made for my UD. Hole sizes are 16mm to fit a 14mm stem & 20mm to fit a 18mm stem.

I'm inspired now.:D Like the dugout area in the front. For the tiny screens. etc. I'm considering as a project converting an thick old wooden cutting board into a vape platform. Plan on being rougher on my space, so I'm thinking of borrowing the old school idea of sanding off a layer of the wood and applying Mineral oil occasionally to deal with scorch marks gouges, etc. Much like a proper rustic wooden cutting block was meant to be used.

I have another cutting board that has a wide groove around the outside that is great for setting anything on it's side.. Perfect width and depth. :). I set all my tube glass wands and j-hook on there side with no worry of them rolling off the board and a 4 foot drop.

:zzz:Dream setup. So prefably start with a thick cutting board or foodsafe type wood, I'd place a groove on the front like I mentioned earlier. and the holes toward the back. and a dugout hole for the tiny bits and a recessed hole for the UD. With plenty space in the center for the glass. Maybe Peg one of those holes with a dowel for a HD to set on.

I like my vapes, but never had an outright craving for a vape itself until yesterday. The curly wood smoke taste the my Curly and TnT wand seemed pleasant to me.

Maintenance. - I applied pure beeswax and beeswax with a few drops of lemongrass oil into the wood a few weeks ago and will give it a proper mineral oil and wax treatment at some point. For now. Been rubbing the beeswax across the dryer areas as it softens from being on heated. Bought more beeswax locally for the copper aromatherapy. It already had a sheen to it but now the stipple like effects of the grain stand out even more.

Say, What is a good wax to mineral oil ratio? I thought about simply heating up the wax in the copper cup as a starting point.:peace:

Hey Dogs, we've got a bunch of stuff going on today (Sunday wooo!) but will be around off and on to answer questions, chat, etc, if intermittently.

Any of you peeps out there running your SC2s (aka ProtoCores) that want to share you can now. Consider your oaths of secrecy to no longer be necessary (as relates to the SC2 only, no talking about the time machine yet).

@CuckFumbustion - srry didn't see your question before I posted. A 50/50 mix of mineral oil to bees wax is a good place to start. You can adjust from there in subsequent meltings if you decide it's too thin or thick.

@underdogette sent me a snap of my log-in-progress today and I've probably gone back and looked at it a dozen times tonight, I'm getting all worked up. It's really cool seeing a picture of something you imagined, and it's exactly the thing. Couple of nice quirks in the zebrawood, too. Love how it turned out @underdog, can't wait to feel it warming up in my hand. (and then warming up my brain)

Holy moly, I had no idea they were so close and you already had some out in the wild, sounds like they're almost ready for primetime once you streamline production. Looking forward to hearing what people have to say about them (and seeing pictures -- do they more or less look the same?).

Nice, glad you like the sneak peak, I like the little 'eyes' on that piece.. not sure if the pic UD'ette sent you shows them? Now I need to finish the Pup up, get a core in it and burn it in for you then it's on it's way whenever you want it.

Yeah I'd say the SC2 has been in the wild for 4-6 months with a small amount of users, we added quite a few 'early adopters' a month or two back. I'll see if I can find the time to take some pictures today or tomorrow but until then yeah they look similar (sort of I guess) but not the same.

What's the difference between the mk1 and mk2? Also I'm assuming the core in the zebrawood glu-lam I got recently is a mk1?

Lots of small differences, a few 'big' differences. Unless we talked to you about it and offered you a SC2 then yeah it's almost certain your new Dog has a SC1. I'll copy/past my post from January on the differences we've made to the vapes in the past year or so and then differences to the SC2 project specifically.

::repost of earlier post:: (original here)

Recent changes we've made in the past year or two:
- started laser cutting/drilling core components on the lathe as compared to the mechanical cutting/drilling we'd been doing for years. The resulting parts are 'nicer' and the much more precisely sized/shaped airflow ports deliver better, more consistent convection to the heater and then the material.
- changed the design for our custom made stainless heating elements with a different heating pattern (to take advantage of the laser parts mentioned above) and lighter mass mounting technique.
- shaved off some mass from the Standard and Air Cores to take advantage of heating element changes.
- optimized design to reduce the amount of heat radiated and conducted to the wooden body by a significant amount.
- finalized the move to an inert, durable and safe all stainless steel air path. The core components, heating element and screens are all stainless, no mismatched materials.

Coming changes to the Standard Core:
- slight tweaks to the laser cut parts to squeeze a little more performance out of the airflow.
- further reductions in mass, combined with newly optimized heating elements for more agile temperature response to changing power levels.
- optimize design further to double the reduction of radiated/conducted heat to the wooden body and trap that heat in the core where it's needed.
- even faster heat up time and recovery between hard hits.
- air inlets modified to better direct airflow where it's needed and to better isolate the material in a loaded stem from unintentional heating.

Just wondering how the 'yard sale' works? Looking to get a VVPS and wanted to see what you had to offer.

Good question. We don't have a set way the 'yard sale' works. Some years we've posted stuff on the website and some years we've done things like posted in the classifieds. With UD'ette still recovering from her surgery we won't be able to have her do the website work so I'll probably look into the requirements to use the classifieds. I haven't posted much there since the rules changes way back so I'll have to look into it. Hoping to get some pictures and info in regards to what we have available here in the next few days. You can message me if you want some more info on what we might have and when.

My micros have mk2s (I think?), not sure about my full-size dogs so I'll avoid saying anything for now since I can't make a comparison... I can post up pics and write some words later after receiving confirmation.

I actually decided today would be a microdog day before I went to bed last night so that worked out pretty well.

Ah, yeah, your Micros probably have a modified Mk2.. I say modified because they're missing some components so as to reduce the diameter (ie, the Micro). If you sent me a picture looking down into your Dogs cores (all lined up together) I could probably ID them for you.

Yeah! The eyes were the quirks I was talking about. What causes them, do you know? My walnut dog has a couple similar ones (they don't pop nearly as much as the ones in the zebra).

As far as 'whenever I want it,' I'd remind you that I've had the finished pup for a week already, but that's time machine talk, mum's the word. I'm loving the SC7; I'm still trying to wrap my head around how you managed to fit a fusion core down that 1" hole -- or how my electric meter runs in reverse when the dog is plugged in. :science::hmm:

I've already followed up with UDette to give her answers to a couple of finishing-up questions and ask a couple of my own. Home stretch!

Hard to say for sure but given the tiny size I'd guess the 'eyes' are from undeveloped buds on the tree while it was growing. Larger ones are frequently caused by small limb sprouts on the trees. :2c:

Thanks for keeping mum on the time machine, will explain about the fusion reactor when the time comes.

I visited the studio/shop of Goo Roo Designs and picked up a second, smaller version of my water pipe. Easier to store. Love the bubbles from the perforated downspout.

Pretty looking Pup you got there.. and I like that nice piece of glass too!

That's really cool, kind of an Occam's Razor thing where I was like, trauma? Weird weather for a couple of years? Dirty dirt? And couldn't make sense of them being so tightly localised. But regular 'trees doing tree things' makes way more sense, and is way gentler. :sherlock:

Time machine? Fusion reactor?! Buddy, I just stopped in to buy a couple of stamps, we've never met.

Hey Dogs, I ran out of time yesterday so I wasn't able to get much (if any) work done on the 'yard sale' stuff but I'm hoping to get to at least some of it today. Fingers crossed...

Excellent... :borg:

Video of the new SC2 in a PD. My last video featured it as well. Quicker heat up and good vapor production! Loving it!

Nice video dude, happy to see your SC2 PD is treating you well. That was a fun build with a tiny little low mass SC2 core in a big heavy beast of a Log.

I hover just below 10v on my full size banksia for flower.

Ipe micro is 10-10.6

rosewood micro needs a lot of heat bc so tiny... no retention. usually 11 or so and just a hit or 2 lol.

madrone is similar to the ipe micro.

it's all dependent on the wood type/density and also screen placement but also preference? I've been sipping on my dogs in rotation all day though trying to enjoy spring break so those are my thoughts

First hit is always bit whispy for me, drying out stuff a bit probably. Second one and subsequent are always nice.

I made a flower/kief sandwich for first time in my dog (inverted in bubbler) and oh man! This shit is strooong. I will have to try this with x2 dogs but so much vapor and for so many hits...

Hey Dogs, I'm (mostly) caught up on other work so I'm finally taking pictures of that 'yard sale' stuff we've been talking about.

I think I got it all figured out and am hoping to post the majority of it in the classifieds this afternoon/evening so stay tuned. Will update here when it gets posted.

You nailed it! Since there can be so much variation between Dogs it's best to start low and creep up until you find the desired temp. :cheer:

Appreciate your thoughts @muunch! I will start at 10 and see how that does before bumping it up. Video to come. Yeah.... that didn't turn out like I was hoping.

Sorry, I didn't have time to upload it to youtube. I will make a better video next time. Great flavor and better vapor on the next hit.

Glad muunch was around to get you started since I was locked in the shop at the time. Looks like you're off to a good start. I think sometimes people under value the taste that lower temp vaping produces.. good stuff!

Oooooooooo. Looking slick! Can't wait to give mine a whirl! Here is a peek at the top of my PDDog.

I was able to get a couple very flavorful hits using the SS Lite Stem, cotton and a few tiny crumbs of shatter I dug up. Yummy! Try it!

Holy Jebus. That multi-channel is going to change my life.

Quoted for emphasis.

Just redid my desk (and reoriented... why did I decide to do this.... no idea) and its a pain in the ass trying to account for all the shit I gotta fit on here considering that my computer desk is the only like desk/table in my apt...

With my 2 monitors+bigass case (why did i pick this one......) + all vape + electronic stuff, it's a mess even when organized and damn if having 3+of the dimmers on my desk (tyvm salt lamp -_-) isn't confusing when I'm baked.

edittttt:

still gotta put up my tapestry but I need to sleep. I'm sure I'll hate myself for doing this in the morning.

The real question is:

do I just bite the bullet and buy a vertical monitor mount so I can save some room? Bc I'm stuck with 2 monitors til they make a 4k 21:9, 144hz+ monitor that isn't worth more than a years rent.
