IMLE. get best flavor on the first hit (and only the first hit) from a ceramic donut atty. Is similar flavor possible with dabs?

D-nail SiC HALO, 350F with carb cap. Still no flavor. Tried higher temps, quartz and titanium nails. Can't get it right. Frustrating, knowing what's lost!

Are you getting good hits at 350f?
Minus flavor?

Yeah, epic hits as far as effects. Way stronger than donut hits. Just makes it more frustrating. Even the reclaim is totally inoffensive. Everything but flavor is superb, and flavor's not bad at all, just not as intense. Tried 350F after reading manufacturer's report indicating that SiC excelled at low temp heat transfer. What makes that first donut hit so delicious, if not especially effective? :hmm:

(It's SiC. Don't care for Ti. Ti seems to impart it's own unpleasant flavor.)

Have you tried any other pieces? The pen vape has a super short vapor path and no water filtration to dilute the flavor. Personally I'd recommend a diffusion pump, you can either get the FC-710 cheap from China or pay little more and get the Grav Labs version.

Haven't, but easy enough to try without water. Doesn't seem to help. This piece is a pretty basic shower head, not big. How's the diffusion pump work?

Monsoon is right about the short vapor path and direct injection of flavor, although personally I find flavor the best off a preheated nail, something to do with it being already at vaporizing temperature. This also seems to establish a stronger, longer lasting overall effect.

On second try, it does seem better without water. Not harsh at all. Maybe just try a short pipe?

No more experimenting for now.

I also use a lot of different devices including the DT 2.7-3.0 (ceramic donut atty) And the quartz and SiC halos, although I rarely use the Halos anymore, I rock the Liger. Halos are still great nails.

While my first hit on a ceramic donut tastes good it's nothing compared to the extreme effects I get from a nice dab off of an Enail. I use the Halos around 550-575 for some pretty good flavor and thick hits. You can keep going lower as long as you don't mind multiple hits from each dab.
If you want to take the next step up in flavor try the Sapphire Halo or Liger with sapphire but I wouldn't buy either of those unless you love your enail.
I also find a standard quartz nail after cooling for 50 seconds to a minute tastes pretty damn good too.
I prefer a dab to the ceramic donut so much that I even have a travel enail setup for when I don't need stealth. Really no comparison on effects or flavor, enail wins. I have even been known to carry a torch and quartz banger in the car to achieve the flavor and effects that only a dab can give.

Dab>Pen all day long

No argument. Love dabbing, just want to turn flavor up a notch. Only use ceramic donut for initial taste test of new concentrate preps.

Liger looks cool, thanks. Sapphire's crazy expensive. SiC replaced quartz shattered in stoner moment, but quartz wasn't clearly better flavor, IMO. Went with SiC and already dropped it without breaking.

I use all 3 inserts for my Ligers and the SiC is the best all around insert. Yeah sapphire tastes better but I can torch, drop, step on my SiC insert and I know it's going to be around.
I already cracked 1 of my sapphire inserts lol.

Heartbraking. Head shop suggested heater wrapped directly around a quartz banger. Ghetto Liger? Any experience with Halo inserts? Might be up for a sapphire insert. What's your travel e-nail setup? Use e-juice on the go, but dabbing gets tolerance too high.

Maybe found a sweet-spot around 450F (analog controller). Better flavor and effects. Memorable hits. Hotter seems to flatten out again. Looking for that terpene sinus rush.

The new reclaimer. Collected a perfect drop of pristine red reclaim from a broken bushing. Haven't caught anything yet with this contraption.

Im at a loss maybe some of these more experienced sic users csn chime in.
@herbivore21 @mrbonsai420
350 sounded kinda low. But i dont have a sic.
Have fun trying to find your temp.
Each extract will vary slightly imo
Good luck

I don't dab but 5 grams a month.
Depends on your consumption I guess?

$8 Torch $9 TI NAIL and cheap low income SHATTER (ROMULAN)

Heat ELECTRIC or FLAME?

Electric is the way to go.

However flame is OK for me?

Old school I guess?

Surprised you don't have a VapCap yet then. Nothing to break!

I was going to get one but I'm a cheap person.
I got 5 grams of top shelf KIEF for $50 so I mix it with EJUICE and a MOD in between sessions.
I get medicated enough.
Joints make me cough?
So I work around it.
COLA'S (CANNABIS TOP'S) is my focus!

DABS are a fun way to use the waste from a harvest!

I think you mean omnivap  The vapcap is definitely breakable!

Reading your earlier posts, it sounds like you started at far too low of a temp. Sounds like you've already resolved your problem by bringing the temp up some ;)

Definitely, a big help, thanks. Self-taught with concentrates.

Makes sense that ceramic donut will always be more flavorful. They give all of the terps, but little of the cannabinoids, in that first hit. With dabs, you get everything at once, so terps are more dilute.

That's basically it in a nutshell. The ceramic heats really slowly and your flavor is cooking off before the rest is hot enough. The terps that do not boil at those lower temps are oxidizing slowly and will not all taste the same by the time they do boil. A major downside of this is that all of the subsequent hits after your donut has started heating up are going to start to taste shitty rapidly. I loathe the taste of subsequent hits on ceramic oil pens - it tastes like overcooked garbage and I'd rather not finish the bowl! Typically half of the bowl remains at this point too! Think of how much of the main higher boiling actives are being wasted here?

IME Ceramic pens are like quartz nails - waste it to taste it or do high temp awful tasting cloudy rips. Fuck that! My dab rig reclaim is much tastier on a nail than the 3rd hit of the best flower rosin in such a pen (I am not exaggerating)!

I have still not found a pen that I continue to use on an ongoing basis. The all white ceramic style carts do not clean properly IME (white porous ceramic ends up with disgusting baked in residue that is nearly impossible to remove, even with something like the puffco+ that you can qtip). I don't wanna go from perfectly clean rig and nail hits every time (I clean the whole thing every day!) to dirty pen hits because it is too hard to get a pen sufficiently clean (read: LIKE BRAND NEW).

Coil based pens never get clean, the coil wicks up the fucking iso and you have to heat the coil forever to get rid of all the iso. The coils obviously collect gunk which tastes like burned ass too. Pens atm take too long to clean (and rarely clean to the extent I demand) to be suitable for somebody who requires the utmost hygiene in their oil setup like myself.

Don't get me started on these pens not working properly with full melt too. Even the coil-less pens taste like ass before you've gotten far into the bowl.

If you wanna improve flavor, you will have to go to sapphire now. Otherwise, SiC is the best place to be ;) Welcome to the experience of using ALL of your meds! :D

So why do you think quartz nails are waste to taste aswell? elaborate brother?

They don't get the heat through the dish consistently enough (bumping and uneven boiling means that some of the vapor tastes much worse than other parts of the vapor from the same dab). As you keep hitting that dab, parts of the dish surface that are too cool lead to slow overcooking like the ceramic cart scenario above. Parts of the dish that are too hot lead to small amounts of cloudier, but lesser tasting vapor - when cool parts of the dish first hit the dab and then the oil pools into a hotter part of the dish, you get some especially foul tasting vapor indeed! Pooling in the edges/corners of dishes often leads to overcooked terrible tasting slow vaporization while this pool slowly boils inefficiently with so little contact to the dish.

With my sapphire and SiC nails, I leave the cap on the nail and inhale until there is no more vapor! With quartz (I've owned multiple different pukinbeagle nails, the d-nail quartz halo and many others - enails and torch), I'd take the cap off and give up on the hit long before vapor production stopped.

If you are using a banger with a barrel coil, you've especially got a bad situation for heat distribution. Torch hits are better for more evenly heating the quartz - the problem with torching becomes the trade off between letting the dish cool more before applying the dab so it tastes better, or starting the dab sooner to ensure that it all boils off completely. To have both of these things is elusive indeed.

There are many other reasons that I could go on and on about, but I'll leave it there now for timeliness' sake :)

Difference in sapphire or SIC? e-nails are cumbersome for me
