Underdog Log Vapes

Yeah, it made sense considering the Madrone is a "cool wood" or whatever it says on wiki about it being cool to the touch - and the banksia dog being less dense I'm sure helps. It's awesome having the variety of heat up times/heat retention/heat levels.

I'll probably post a bunch of dog vids to my ig once i get used to it. Still waiting on my claisen and fc 188 anyways

Use the dimmer and 15v for now. @underdog was just talking in the past few pages about how difficult getting a solidly recommendable VVPS has been but apparently some alternatives are being looked into so maybe we will have something to try soon! :)

Just fwiw, I bought a 15v PS and haven't had to use it even for concentrates lol

I would talk to Underdogette before ordering anything so she can help you out. I say this because unless your Dog has a cool running heater then you won't need the 15v and can get by with a 12v (with the LED Dimmer). :2c:
Got ya. It's just that when I have a sess with my roommates it gets to be a little cool when passing around. Would the dimmer help with that at all or would it just tell me when it's back at full power.

Ah ok then given that description you might benefit from the 15v with Dimmer for those group sessions since you'll have more max heat with the 15v combo vs the 12v one. Neither will tell you anything about power or heat level other than the voltage as a reference number.

I'd recommend a display dimmer or display cable. Decide what your baseline voltage is for solo use, and bump it 0.1V-0.3V when you've got company; a little goes a long way. In fact, you might even want to blow into the core before the first hit in a while, to reduce the risk of combustion, but that extra smidge of voltage will keep the core at a higher temp and get back there a bit quicker.

Happy Weekend everyone! Just wanted to share two customs we've got going on in the shop this week. I thought it was pretty cool that we have a Cocobolo Queen and a Rosewood Rook in the works at the same time. :)

@fresham and other peeps interested in DIY - I figured I'd take a minute and share some things that you DIY'ers and techies might find useful. If there's a good response (no sense in doing it if it's not wanted or needed) I figure I can do it on an ongoing basis.

First off is a cable that you guys may find handy for use with both lab style VVPS and your multimeter. This simple cable is has 2.1mm male and female connectors spliced to common banana plug ends. This means you can use it as a power cable (with VVPS), as a power supply tester (with multimeter) and to measure the resistance of your Dog (multimeter). You can also get creative and do more complex things with it like power a Dog (VVPS) while using the other port (with multimeter) to see the voltage applied to the Dog under load (while hooked up and running). This is the swiss army knife of cables and should be one of the first tools in your Dog 'toolbox'.

So, for the curious, that cable can be bought off the dog store and then one should be looking for a multimeter and VVPS?

Since there are no universally recommendable VVPS, what about multimeters? Sorry I know this is like DIY-er 101 stuff but I'm lazy and this is not my area of expertise or even close ._.

edit:

And @woahbackup - yeah, all of my stuff (2x 12v PS, 1x 15v PS, 2x LED dimmer+extension) came from the UD store.

I believe I can alleviate this situation (as I've noticed the jumping happening on both the new and the old dimmers, independently and simultaneously now) as when I get my HI, I believe I can get a VVPS from Alan as well, but not sure of how it functions.

Hmm.. it's not for sale on the store and I wasn't planning on selling them.. I was just posting in case anyone wanted to make one as a DIY.

As far as multimeters go pretty much any one with removable (banana plug) leads would work since it'd only be used for measuring the super basics (voltage and resistance). You can get them for as little as $5 or so but ones in the $20 range will be a better value (quality/features).

VVPS wise there a tons of ways to go but you're right there's no standard recommendable one. I don't know which specific one comes with the HI but as far as I know it's just a basic buck/boost converter board ($5-$10 on ebay) mounted on a base.

Thanks for the clarification @underdog

I'll do some reading tomorrow to get a proper grasp, as the only info I've read thus far has been restricted to this thread. I can get used to having 2 dogs on 24/7, so may need to invest in proper equipment to safely regulate the setup.

Also, you killed it on those customs man. Really great stuff. :D

Lo and Behold! The transformative power of Vapor.
I used the beeswax with lemongrass oil as a coat for my dig. Preventing the natural cracks from becoming larger cracks over time. Perhaps I should get mineral oil and make my own proper coat. But if straight wax and some elbow grease has an upside, I'd like to heat that. Since the outside gets heated during use, I can work more wax into the grain. Lemongrass is perhaps a key ingredient in Lemon Pledge. So I hear ages ago, but can't re-verify.

The tattoo VVPS and I are getting more time together. And been achieving thick clouds with it at 13.0 and my FC-ball and the double fine grind method with my SCS.

Accidentally had a spill with wax that got a little inside the heater. :o But was able to coax off what I could and burn off the rest. It has been behaving well after that incident.

Getting use with the J-hook and 18mm Nong which I agree with @Stevenski is the way to go to stretch the vapor from the tiniest amount of materials. Especially if you have an unconventional shaped log vape and don't want something on top too tipsy. I've held mine upside down in my hand like a calbash pipe.->;pd;+ :sherlock:

Log vapes are not designed to be a tight setup and rely on the drag of air over the heated metal of this looser setup. So I try to touch with opposite sides of the SS walls with my stem in hopes of getting more surface area in contact with the hottest part of the oven. Or I will turn the stem to make contact with it in a different spot.

Underdog, you are the coolest! It's such a treat the way that you stay up with all of the FC happenings.......just an amazing start to the stellar CS that you and Underdogette deliver. And those two new chess pieces, sweet lord man!

Aww.. thanks man!

To clarify I wasn't planning on making/selling the cables just because I already have too many projects to work on and I have to pick and choose so not to sabotage production but I wouldn't mind making the occasional one for people who really wanted one but weren't able to DIY it.

If you move to buy 'proper equipment' talk to me first (or not, whatev :p) and I'd be happy to help advise.. I've been down that road a time or two.

Awesome post man, thanks. I also like Lemongrass mixed with wax since LG is one of my favorite scents. Fun fact - people can take their Underbutter, spoon some out of the container into something microwave safe and then carefully melt it and stir in their own oil of choice. DIY scented wood-wax. :science: Also yes on the rotating stems.

I found circularly rotating the dog (especially when it's upside-down on a water pipe) really helps to get every little bit. I saw someone use this tech on another log vape video, thinking it was a HI one, but yeah it works great.

Yes this rotating stems (or Dogs when on a water piece) is one of our recommended techniques and I think is in our FAQ, instructions or video(s) as well.. the suggestion is definitely somewhere. It certainly works well and should work with most types of vaporizers that use stems too.

Is there not? What's wrong with the Tekpower from Amazon? I have it and it is working just fine. It tends to waver around by 0.1v but I figure that's a "feature" of not having a digital control for the setting. Works just fine anyway.

What price point should I be looking at when trying to find you guys VVPS options?

For an off the shelf consumer electronic version (ie, inexpensive mass produced) like Tekpowers, etc?

How about an in-house UD made option?
Rugged enough for use as a portable desktop. Perhaps? I like being able to uncord my VVPS and roll up the cords and unit for possibly taking elsewhere. If you can go as small as my TPN-023 with similar hard set dials and knobs but with more durable electronics and PCB, that might be a direction if you are making an in-house option.
Just brainstorming here. How about a simple wooden cylinder with all the hardware inside. So you can perhaps lathe the smaller pieces that are too small for logs. Perhaps even shaped as a platform for your log to set in for stability?

My selfish aim is to be able to take my UD, a VVPS and a lightweight enough, but powerful battery to carry to say a cabin somewhere without stressing about power consumption for a weekend.

Thanks, glad you like. And glad to hear my method is O.K. and that those with underbutter can have that lemon pledge wood smell. BTW. I actually vape lemongrass. If that tells you how much I like it.

Does anybody use Eucalyptus oil and wax in the copper bowls? I use lemongrass and a single drop of lime oil. Have Clove and tea tree oil lying around.

It is nice being able to switch from aromatherapy to :hmm:ummm ....... vapor therapy. :haw:

So I was on to something and not being silly by rotating my stems to change where the hottest point is. Want to perfect that technique even more then. :sherlock:

Personally, I don't mind spending more money for reliability. I think those wanting to save money can continue to use the dimmers as a "cheap" option, as they're still fairly reliable... I'd say my voltage jumping issue happens <5% of the time (and they're both on 24/7) so that's still pretty good success rate for a <$30~ish option.

@underdog This is super helpful as I'm looking to switch to soldered barrel plugs since it will help testability and such. The terminal blocks are easy to probe, but this makes that setup just as easy. I would personally love to see more insight and pics of your electronics setup and tools as you find things to share! My biggest challenge right now is finding the ideal cable setup and balancing durability and functionality with maintainability. Thanks for sharing!

Showing off the weekly desktops. 'Curly' UD in the lower half. Can mount the colored, less heavier 'Spoon' and F/F adapter on a Nong with the UD and get the thick glass draw instead of the J-hook which is great for squeezing tiny amounts. BTW.

The 13.0 setting and proper draw strength slowed down by the j-hook allow me to skip grinding and use the SS stem like a cutting tool and take out a core sample of materials and vape that. The pic is low res and doesn't really capture the detail and patina of the wood. But you might get an impression how the grain goes in a different direction then the sheen pattern. The TnT is the wood I wanted in a UD, but the one I ended up with is more suited to me. Glad I got the stem to quiet that impulse. :haw: :peace:
