[No offense, but...] I think that picture is way too out of focus to tell whether there is mold or not.

None taken.... I can only speculate....

This is why I have asked if you have scopes???

How many of you that buy from dispensarys, put it under a scope to check it?

IMO it does not look like mold. However the pictures are not focused enough to determine this. Invest in an inexpensive loupe to inspect the trichomes. I use my camera phone zoomed in with the loupe to really see the detail.

You should always inspect your flowers whether no matter the source.

i understand that part of the job of the glandular head are to reflect light to protect the plant. Depending on the colour of flash used, this can reflect and caus the illusion of a different surface texture.

Iv just been messing about to try to replicate this with my camera and a selection of cannabis that I know is mould free.
And I'm thinking of growing some mould on some herb, just to take pics and monitor at progressive stages.

Anyway here is a handful of my og kush that's been curing for a month now...

And this is 2 nugs of og kush, 1 is a month old, the other is 6 months old....

I have a magnyfying lighted desk lamp the kind that you see on the counters at the dispensaries showing off their bud. I looked at all three strains and I didn't see anything that looked like any mold pictures that I've seen online.

To be on the safe side I called the dispensary/store and asked about the two different producers to see if they knew anything. The manager told me to bring it in so he could do a check. He didn't want to be selling foul or inferior products. Lately he said he hadn't had any problems. He said early on he had to be careful. He said he weeded out the shitty farms.

Edit
I took my cannabis back to have the store manager look at it to make sure it was free from mold. He and I looked at it through a magnifying glass and didn't see anything that looked like mold. I kinda felt embarrassed but he said he wanted to know for himself and was glad I came in. He was really nice about it. I've been going there for a couple months and like the store. They are always busy unlike some shops. Their bud isn't all dried out like some places.

I don't want to use something that might make me sick. FC is the bomb!

What to look for
Moldy-Weed-3.jpg

When looking for mold, whether under blacklight, a magnifying glass, or with the naked eye, there are common characteristics in the growth pattern and composition of most molds that will easily set them apart from the structure of cannabis buds. Just remember that those little hairs with shiny wet globs on them that cover the buds and upper leaves are the trichomes, where THC is produced. Those are the good guys.

Mold, on the other hand, will appear as:

  • Black spots or spores
  • White, grey, brown, or yellow fuzz
  • White, grey, or black web-like material, making it appear that bugs have made their home in the bud
Blacklight makes mold appear yellowish or yellowish green.

Thanks for that @MinnBobber. The image appears to be broken but the link below for the Photo Credit works. It's nice to have a visual reference. I was wondering if a black light would work to detect it, that's good to know it does.

Most of the cannabis I get is lab tested for mold, pesticides, and other contaminants as well as for potency. I still don't always trust it, especially when I get really frosty bud like that Bubba Kush I posted a few days ago. That looked so strange with the pattern of the trichomes forming white lines across the buds. It looked even weirder in person than it did in the photograph.

I have a 30x scope that I use to check for mold and have yet to find any. I should probably get one with more zoom, 30x is barely acceptable to be honest. I understand how many times in pictures it does look like the buds are moldy. I think a big part of that is lighting and focus. Especially with phone cameras it's hard to get a really good picture of small detailed objects. Phone cameras generally have bad macro performance, issues with lighting and color balance, depth of field, you name it.

Unfortunately that Bubba Kush is gone, but I have another strain that I'll use to try to illustrate this phenomenon. Unfortunately I only have a phone camera myself, and using it with the scope is not as detailed as directly looking through the scope with your eye.

The most questionable area is at the tip of the bud, I deliberately made it out of focus and changed the color balance:

This picture the focus and lighting are better, but it still looks somewhat questionable:

Zoom in with the scope and it's just a forest of trichomes:

This view is much more zoomed in and detailed when looking through the scope with your eye and not a cell phone camera with limited macro ability.

Even parts of this picture look problematic but in real life you can zoom in there and see layer after layer of trichs, no mold. The scope light is overexposed in the above picture which can also create the moldy look. Unfortunately that's about as high quality as I can get with my macro photography at the moment.

I think it was good that you posted the concern and now folks have learned more about mold which can be a big problem.

The difficult part is that a thick sea of trichomes can look like a patch of mold.

It seems like the key may be that mold forms these interconnected strings, unlike individual trichomes.

Can we start a thread on recommendations for a good scope/ jeweler's lope ?
I see ones with adjustable power and built in light. What's a really good one at a good price???
Is 60X the best power??

@kellya86 dont apologize we all learned a lot over your comments. I started really checking out what the different molds are and what to look for. It was a learning experience for me. The manager at the store was really helpful too. He said to come to him if I ever have anymore questions.

I wish my pics would turn out like @I'm Ron Burgundy?'s

I did download a magnifying app on my phone.

have you compared NETA's to Garden Remedies' Ghost Train Haze? I have only tried Garden Remedies, and I do like it... but, I think, I prefer NETA's FaceWreck, haven't tried NETA's Ghost Train
Haven't tried GR's Ghost Train Haze yet. I've noticed when they have it though it doesn't stay in stock too long. I am also a fan of NETA's Facewreak, it's definitely a great strain.

If I was a guessing man I would less than 1% of the people that buy from dispensaries which I also think is higher than those who don't.
I always look at my newly purchased bud with a jeweler's loop, but I also buy about 95% from dispensaries that claim publicly to test everything they sell for contaminants like molds and pesticides in addition to cannabinoid potency profiles. I have yet to find any mold. I do remember going to a dispensary a few years ago where I looked into a jar to smell it and you could see the powdery mildew everywhere. I asked the budtender about it and said it clearly had mold. He said he knew, but that the manager wanted it to be sold anyway (at a discounted price.) I haven't bought anything from them again.

P.S. @CarolKing I don't see anything in your pictures that looks like mold to me, but they are just a little out of focus, which is why you cant see discrete trichomes either.

Where are you getting this shit from, Ron. Every pic is of fabulous examples. Very nice, mate.
Thanks amigo. I get these flowers from my one and only trusted medical collective. Been going there for 6 years now. It's owned by two guys who actually care about their patients.

Besides growing my own, it's the only place I get flowers from.
