Any tips to get more than .05g into either the Oversized NonG or NonG? I'd like to load .1g but no matter how I adjust the basket it doesn't vape any better than the smaller loads. Trying to one hit through water and get a lung bursting draw but the small .05g loads run out way before I do. Thanks!

I'm sure my oversized nong takes more than .05 grams. But I've only used it sparingly, because it does require more heat, and I mostly use my underdog solo anyway, so it's a bit much for me alone.

But for bigger loads I use the glass stems. Not sure that I could pull it all with one hit, but maybe a youngin could. It's about twice the load size as the stainless tipped stems.

You might want to try concentrates wrapped in hemp fiber (found on underdogs site) if you want huge rips than send you places where few venture. I've dedicated my tong just for concentrates. Again it suits that purpose very well.

And really just experiment, and I'm sure you will get satisfaction.

Edit: I'm assuming you have the standard core? That is what I have experience with. Others may have more advice for aircore users. Either way best of luck!

No need to dial back and forth .3 degrees. If you like the results in this temp range, just set it at 12.2 during your session. What will lengthen the lifespan of your UD is to dial it way back between sessions. Maybe to 9.0 or whatever gives you an acceptable time to get up to your sweet temp when you are ready to use again. Enjoy.
Well I had some more time with the 6 ft cord that I got from the UD site and the TPN-023 Voltage meter from Ebay. Read over the Voltage guide that came with the cord.

So on to my main question. I was told that I have a standard core from the seller. Read or misread somewhere else that there was two types of standard core elsewhere.:hmm: So that Does that fall into either the SS heater cartridge or Resistor vape category? Or do I need to delve deeper in it's history? I do want to know what are the reasonable limits and the max for standby.

Been kind to the Voltage meter first. Listen for electrical hums, etc. Then the suggested 12.3v and other heat profiles once I feel like it is warmed up enough times and broken in. Luck of the draw if I get a good one. So I am told. :hmm: Has it warming up some copper bowls which I also got with the UD order. Beeswax and Lemongrass oil.

Broke down and bought an 18mm J hook that is lightweight enough to sit on top of a 45 degree M/M adapter and a F/F 18mm and the 18mm Nong as a variation. Has a certain look to it.

@CuckFumbustion I believe the 2 current types of core in production for the standard UD's are the Standard Core and the Air Core; both have SS heaters but different amounts of material used to construct them. If you look inside your UD and see the heating area filled with a star shaped metal core and retention ring then you probably have the Standard Core, if the heater has lots of free space/air inside then it's an Air core. I believe the resistive core mentioned on the voltage chart refers to their older models that came with a ceramic heater, if you have one purchased recently I don't think you will have a resistive core. I'm sure a quick email to @underdog will sort it out if there's any confusion though!

You mentioned you read over the chart that came with the cord.. is that the same as the one that's found here at the bottom of the page? I've been using that chart as my guide lines for max/standby voltage with great success. I also haven't had any need to go above 12v for excellent results even though my UD is capable of it.

I probably have the OG Standard core. But will try to find a pic of an Air core for comparison. The Voltage Guide is a somewhat shorter wording from the Full page guide on the UD site. So I am referring to that as a guideline. And what two cents worth I can get here.

So If I have the earlier Standard core, does it fall directly into the stainless heater cartridge or resistor category?

The voltage regulator makes all the difference for me right away. I was not getting along as I hoped at 12v. alone. Noticed earlier that a power cord with a transformer even seemed to help on it's own. So figured that if I did have an older standard core, then having more power is almost essential. IMHO.

I also have to slow down my draw which was causing a wet build up which in turn clogged up the Nongs, when I was just using the straight 12v alone. 12.3v just clears me of that hurdle.

It's really difficult to tell if you've got a resistor or a heater cartridge in your vape without taking the whole thing apart. We started putting heater cartridges into vapes in about late 2014. Before that it was resistors, and we have had some straggler resistor vapes throughout the years since.

As far as the voltage guide, it's really just a guide, or a starting point if you will. The heater cartridges just tend to run much hotter than the resistors, so we didn't want people starting off at 13v or something and combusting right off the bat, since a lot of the resistors need 13v to get to the same heat as a cartridge at 12v (for example). So, you'll need to come up with your own guide specific to your vape, and that's going to be a subjective thing based on how hot you feel like your vape is getting.

I know, it's not very scientific.... but hopefully that helps. :)

Hey, CuckFumbustion. FWIW, I have a resistor-based dog from early 2013 running off of a tpn-023. With a 12v power adapter, it was running a bit colder than I wanted, so Dave set me up with the tpn, and everything's been golden since. I tend to run mine between 12.8v and 13.3v, the lower end for flower and the higher end for concentrates, reclaim and re-vaping abv (yes, yes I do). I don't have mine plugged in 24/7.. maybe 7 hours per day. Anyway, I've been running this setup for 4 years, same vvps, no problems at all.

The tpn-023 I have will read about .3v higher when cold than when it warms up.. so if I plug it in now (cold) it will read 13.4v, but it will gradually stabilize to 13.1v after an hour or so. I wouldn't be surprised if yours does something similar. Also, mine hisses, but it's very quiet and I can't hear it over a computer fan. It has done that since it was new and hasn't changed over the years.

Anyway, if you find you do have a resistor-based dog, I hope the info above gives you something more to go on, especially since you have the same vvps.

Cheers!

Well, that at least gives me a timeline that might be useful, if I can get to know the back history of my UD more.
Thanks for clarifying more about the guide. And my order for that matter. :)

Glad you found something that works with your OG standard core and your tpn-023. Much less, time tested for 4 years under all conditions.

I'm suspecting that I might have an OG standard by the heat profile you have been mentioning that works for you and the short time that I have tried out my new setup.
I did notice the fluctuation in reading with my tpn-023 almost in the manner you described and will make adjustments for that. You also answered few follow up questions that I would have ended up posting.

That .3v higher false reading when ir starts cold might explain a few other minor things I'm bumping into. Thanks for all the extra info. It does confer a few things that I had a hunch about.

Anyone have tips for a particularly fragrant NonG? I've soaked it in 99% isopropyl overnight and it's clean as a whistle, but still has a pretty strong odour (up close, I can't smell it from three feet away or anything). I wonder if a baking soda wash might help.

Yeah, it's got what you might call a characteristic odour. :) Smelled completely neutral when new.

Hmm tough one.. nylon is pretty porous so things soak in and get stuck pretty good.

If you aren't in a super hurry I'd maybe try covering it in a container of baking powder, or possibly rice and letting it sit for a few days and see if that pulls the majority of the smell out. :hmm:

I recommend a 91% Iso (rather than 99% which makes nylon's porosity greater during time of contact) shake and rinse, followed by a dish cleaner (dawn/ajax) with water rinse...... followed immediately by a warm water rinse, and finally vacuum cleaner suction from both directions (I use a shop vac, with my hand cupped around stem for concentrated suction). Let the vacuum do it's job for a good 30 seconds each way.
I have a couple 10 year old daily use NonGs that have absolutely no odor, while nylon stems and Nongs sent to me by others (absolutely clean looking) still smell like bud.

91% Iso is pretty inexpensive (1.57 a bottle at Fry's), but if wanting to use diluted 99%, do the math.
99% alcohol is highly hydroscopic - it will absorb any water vapor immediately. It also has a very low vapor pressure so it evaporates quickly. (this allows residues to redeposit themselves and sink in even deeper).

To make 91% IPA from 99% IPA, the problem becomes:
Volume IPAx0.99/0.91 = Volume Water/0.09
Choose a volume for either, for example, let's make a solution with 10mL IPA
10mLx0.99/0.91 = volume water/0.09
Solve for Volume Water= 10mL x 0.99x(0.09/0.91) = 0.98mL

Final solution:
Take 10mL of your 99% IPA and add 0.98 mL water to get a final concentration of 91% IPA!

Just to follow up, I tried the lower-concentration isopropyl soak-and-shake followed by a soak and scrub in some hot water with Dawn, a lot of hot water rinsing, then a thorough forced-air dry and it's night and day! There's still a hint of odour, but this is a NonG I've been using since November and cleaning solely with isopropyl. I'm pretty confident that the next time around it will be as good as new.

By the way, I use these brushes for cleaning stems and they're good. They fit juuuuust right into the NonG hole and stainless tip, and they have a few radial bristles at the end (which are good for poking micro-crumbs of herb out of the screen holes, just be gentle so you don't move the screen).

Does anyone have anyone tips for doing a good deep clean on the wooden stems? I've been using a pipe cleaner for my Lignum Vitae stem ever since I received it but I'm wanting to give it a good deep clean to get rid of all the gunk on the inside that the pipe cleaner cant but I don't know what would be a good chemical to use that's safe for the wood. I'm pretty sure ISO isn't good for the wood. Any suggestions?

I personally use Jack Daniels honey whiskey. Remove the bushing, dampen a paper towel, thread it through and then thread a dry paper towel through to get the left over. Repeat till it's clean. The after taste is yummy.

That's what I do, there are plenty of other ways too.

I personally would never use ISO on wood.:shit:

Well still tweaking the exact temps with the tpn-023, but have enough of a power plan to use my UD full time and let my EVO rest. :whoa: I didn't think that would be possible. Which is a mile better than what I had with just the base 12v.

I do like the taller J-hook setup that I mentioned earlier. Lightweight enough not to tip thing over and can be cleared while leaving the Nong in the UD.

Now a portable power option, So it can travel with me. :haw: Something rugged and weather resistant. Maybe a rugged shorter cord or VVPS option?
Thanks for all the info and suggestions. Including the initial warm up and the behavior of the voltage meter.

Maaaaaan.. I wish I was doing something that fun today but noooooo for me it's chore day and I'm sanding a big ass pile of Purple Heart blanks. I might have to phase PH out too like the Banksia pod if it keeps making more and more itchy to work with.
Please wear Loooong gloves/sleaves, and breathing mask!!! PH & BANKSIA will keep you far ahead of the game! YOU are a champion!

Haha thanks man! Not to worry I'm fully geared up for protection but at the end of the day nothing will keep all the sharp splinters and fine dust off.. and once you start getting sensitized to something even the amount that gets on your hands (gloves and lathes don't mix) will start a body wide itch fest lol.

Well...guess it's time to acquire a Purple Heart dog.

I've got enough Purple Heart for probably 20-30 more Dogs.. so you should have a while to pick one up for the collection before we run out.
