Combustion occurs around 450 degrees or so I believe. Your not burning it but your dang close. It should never be harsh. Is your bag or whip brown? It shouldnt be. Only the very tip of my nossel and bag have any brown build up and it is a thick honey like substance that when stuck to the back of your tooth and licked provides a great buzz. The rest is a clear to cloudy glass clear buildup in the bag. You want the lease heat possible. Try 365 and fill about 5 bags with .2 grams you wont be disapointed.

I'll give it a try. I originally started at a lower temp and would gradually raise it throughout the session, but eventually I just said fuck it and began cranking it up to the max from the get-go, thinking that was the easiest way I could make sure I wasn't "missing out" on any of the potential effects. The small amount of brown on my whip and bags sounds like what you described. I always leave my biomass out to dry a day before vaping which might account for the relative lack of brown buildup at max temp.

I just want someone who really understands the science of vaping to clear this up. If I set it to 370, take a few hits (or fill a bag) then raise the temp 10 degrees or so, take 2 more hits and so on til I reach 440 degrees, would that be the same as just starting at 440 from the beginning in terms of receiving all the psychoactive effects?

Hic,
You could start low and work your way up but I believe it wont be neccesary to go past 380 if your Ion is working correctly. Your not burning it at your high temp but you are scorching it. As you slowyl increase the temperature moisture and all in the biomass that is water soluable(like thc and other cannaboids) will change states from a solid to a gas and travel upwards since heat rises above cold. Now there is an exact temperature at which this happens 356 degrees. Raising the temperature only vaporizes the stuff in the biomass that vaporizes at a higher temperature. Combustion turns the entire biomass and all that it contains including carcinogens into a gas called smoke. Try this. Put your Ion on 300 degrees grind your product very finely and fill your bag. You wont see anything in it at all. Looks like a bunch of hot air. Inhale the bag like normal and you will still get high but the flavor will be like holding the biomass up to your nose and breathing. Its natural to want to get your bang for your buck. The prices for high quality biomass are getting crazy. Below is taken from wiki.

Most vaporizers deliver dry, warm vapor that can irritate the throat and upper airway tree. By running the vapor through water and/or past ice to moisture condition and cool prior to delivery, irritation of the throat and upper airway can be reduced or eliminated. "Raising the temperature so pyrolysis products like nitrosamine are present, is known to increase risk for cancer in exposed oral and airways epithelium, among other health effects of tobacco." A properly used vaporizer should never allow this to happen; however, many smokers making the transition to vaporization will make this mistake. Smoking means pyrolysis, so tar and noxious gas from cannabis combustion are absent in properly temperature constrained vapor. In addition, THC is a powerful expectorant, so the cilia, cough and other healthy airways defense mechanisms are activated, cleaning out any inhaled material.

Also hic when i believe im to the end of my product instead of raising the heat turn the fan on without the bag attached for about 5 seconds and then add the bag mid stream. this will allow the heat to penetrate to the deeper parts of the biomass with very little waste.

ccroller,
Just got my ion. It is a pretty good unit I thoroughly enjoyed my first couple of sesses. Looking forward to jumping on board.

i don't know for sure.

what i do know is that if i put my herbie to max right off the bat (indicated 400*F) the vapor is harsher than from a pipe.

but if i slowly work it up to that point, it's still irritating at the higher temps, but definitely not as bad.

there is a number of possible scenarios that could lead to these results, so i won't try to rationalize it just yet. i will recommend going slow.

Hey Bruce,

I purchased the Zephyr and was only able to use it twice. Third time was not a charm and it is not heating up. I tried to reset the electronics and still nothing. I have called the number and emailed you guys, but nothing. Help a guy out.

Steve,
have you tried emailing me? bruce@zephyrvaporizers.com? I have seen nothing.
First step in any warranty repair is to fill out the RMA form here:

Thanks.

Bruce@Zephyr,
My outlook is 415 is the highest you should go due to prime cannabanoid extacting, after that is just putting added heat stress on the unit as well as scorching your bud rendering next to nothing when using your AVB. In my outlook vape how your feeling that sess. Some days im patient start my bags at 360 and go up accordingly. Other days I start at 390 and hit till 420 :ko: Know your herb, as well as yourself...

^^^ haha you can tell im so :peace: n

If that means there's nothing much of use above 415 F, it all depends on what you're seeking. There are compounds with sedative and pain relieving effects above that, and many people are after those compounds.

after that is just putting added heat stress on the unit as well as scorching your bud rendering next to nothing when using your AVB.
Any decent vape can easily go above 415 without any stress on the unit. If this temp range were to really put a strain on a vape, it wouldn't be on the market very long. How much is left in ABV and whether to save it or not is an individual decision. If you're looking for those high temp analgesic and sedative compounds, which are mostly what you get with ABV, they're still very much there even if you go above 415.

real valid points. I just have the traditional thought that the harder and longer you work something the more likely it will break. To me 415-420 is typcially the max ill personally go for extraction but feel free to do as you please.

I only vape at 440 for insomnia. Nothing works better

I tried this last night after you posted.
:o
The first time I did it, I didn't know what hit me. I woke up 12 hours later not knowing where I was. LOL

Can I come to your house??? ;)

tinman,
must say I tried the 440 today with some avb I had laying around and the results were very dopey. Some questions about my new ion however...

~Bruce what all needs to be done to apply for the warrenty?
~How many different kinds of bag nozzles are currently avaible? I see a push button mouth peice on the site, however my 10k SN ion comes with annoying inhaler type valve that pinches my lips when im messed.
~Are there any new innovations in the Ion's future for using the USB compatability.

The warranty is in effect from the point of purchase, you do not need to do anything extra, odds are will will put a warranty registration on the website in the future but for now, no need. If you have a problem with the ION start off by filling in the RMA form for Warranty Returns here :
http://zephyrvaporizers.com/store/page.html?chapter=10&id=9

There is one kind of nozzle available for the ION. *Yup I have even pinched my lip on it, but only after a few bags. Anymore I don't press my mouth so hard against the valve.
There are 2 kinds of bags available from Zephyr for the ION
There is the traditional bags ( loud and crinkly) come in sets of 4 pre-cut bags
There are the new(ish) quiet nylon bags, they come with new IONs and also as a 12 foot replacement roll.
There are some innovations planned for the USB connectivity but I hate to put info out there without being able to back it up. The whip and the software have been a rather large pain. I get dates for when it will be ready but that changes so I try not to get anyone hopes up.
At some point soon I will just announce that both are available, till then I hate to BS without having some kind of verifiable info.

It is so nice to finally have a product that the maker replys back to my forum post within 8 hours. It feels nice to finally be in good hands in terms of my habit. Thanks for all the prompt info Bruce!!

Well the tubing didn't fit. That being said, I think I might have a way to make it work in the end.

I'll make a video if I get it working.

edit: Sorry, I had to delete the video. Linked the wrong video to the wrong person and I had to act fast before they found out what I was doing. :(

The whip works. I tried to get a seal using chewing gum but it is not nessescary. Basically its not a handsfree whip - just stick the wand over the stem and suck to made sure you have a seal.

Hits HARD. I find you can use LB trench sized amounts and get totally :ko: Also you can stretch the tubing out - it'll fit then. The best solution, I think, is to find a gasket for the wand lip.

Well, I'm new to FC and this forum but have owned a Zephyr Ion for a handful of months now and need someone/somewhere to run to with questions and discussion. Hope this place is as entertaining as I expect.

First question...

With all of the extra pieces and things that came with the cleaning swabs and stuff, what are the little peanut sized white/clear things with 3 ridges on them? Looks like the top of the tube the vapor comes out of but can't quite tell if it is or how I'd change them out. Only cleaned this vape once (in 3 months) but planning on doing so again tonight.

The eyes have one language everywhere
I believe what you are describing are the replaceable seals for the stem on the lid. I just grab it an pull it off -no polite way to do it. And then i wet the new one, an slip it on nice and easy. After a few hundred bowls I have found that the little ridges start to wear off. I replace mine every 3 months or so, You are right on track, i think. :2c: welcome to FC
