Zephyr Ion

I see the Zephyr Ion is listed in the "Best Vaporizers of 2010" on http://www.herbalvaporizer.com/ in their banner ad for the Ion

But they don't have a picture of that hot chick with the unit. They need to bring her back, and hopefully with the same black bra, and hopefully there is just a little more booby showing in future pictures.

I also like the girl on legalbuds.com - she's nekkid but tastefully covered with colas and buds. Actually it may be the same girl on herbalvaporizer. Anyway, they list the Zephyr as "new and amazing" and in the lineup for best vaporizers of 2010.

Pot.com has a banner ad for legalbuds and also shows the zephyr along with the words Best Vaporizers of 2010.

The Zephyr website looks like it has a new look, even with a special page dedicated to the sneak preview of the upcoming whip. Good work!

I'm really interested in this whip, it gives it a leg up when making a comparison to a Volcano in that it can use a whip, and also a leg up when comparing it to an SSV or DB style whip-only vape when you consider it will also fill bags.

Bruce, any idea what the diameter of that silicone tubing is? I like the use of silicone tubing, but not the look of it, so I'm thinking of picking up some of this braided sleeving to sheath the tubing.

Also, in this youtube vid from CHAMPS 2009, it looks like the valve is different from what we have now. Am I correct? Skip to about 1:19 in the video for a shot of the valve (you'll see it closer up at 1:54)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5D3mHxZ6H4U

Also, the guy who shot that video was definitely interested in "Lacey's" tits as much as he was in the vaporizer. LOL. Too funny.

Bruce,

I've been reading the recent posts on the FC forums & doing my research comparing the Zephyr to the competition, including Da Buddha & Volcano. Yesterday I put an Zephyr Ion listing on Ebay on my watch list selling for $249.99 plus $18.99 shipping but today the price increased to $359.99 (seller stiksnstuff among others) with free shipping. Was wondering which distributer you can steer me to that would sell for yesterday's price! Would I be automatically placed on the waiting list for the whip accessory? Thanks!:p

sorry to say there were some folks on eBay selling the ion for below set MAP pricing. In essence breaking the rules some knowingly some on accident. $359 is the lowest advertised price. VapeNow has a promotion to get it for $320 with a code someone has posted. There are a couple clubs and dispencaries giving their members discounts as well.

this is short, doing it all from the phone since I am traveling the next 10 days or so.

Derf the tubing question.... here goes:

outside diameter: 8mm (about .315 inches)
inside diameter: 5mm (about .2 inches)
wall thickness: about 1.6mm (8 - 8.2mm total width)
1.5 meters long

Oh, and how's this come to you for stealth... put two stickers of eyes on either side of the silver logo sticker, and the thing looks like a fat Buddha statue, or something from Easter Island. Then you just need to throw a nappy 'round its lower section like a skirt and you've got some weird piece of art (at best), or some weird toy (at worst). If Zephyr has any sense of humor, they should include a sheet of stickers of different eyes and mouths to put on your Ion! You could make like different faces with them, like a Mr Potato Head... One could be a sleepy face, one could be a smiley face, or a happy face... with glasses...

Hey , nice costume, it's fun.....looks like my ZEPHYR ION VAPORIZER has been into the liquor cabinet again...no really, i think the lamp shade stealths it out...

Yea clever, it looks like a lamp got it on with alarm clock :brow:

I think your onto something, perhaps they should offer for few dollars more a lampshade stealth kit hehe.

You guys got me all thinking of halloween. This year I am going to have a bash and am thinking of neat ways and things to do stuff. I am thinking of headless of Zephyr or a Zephyr Jacolantern or a witch Zephyr or something hehe.

Since I dropped in with such aplomb :/ last time, I wanted to at least close the chapter on the bum Ion. Bruce and I exchanged emails the following day and he had a replacement unit shipped off to me. He was very friendly and seemed to genuinely understand my frustration. And if he was annoyed by my outburst he didn't let it show. And inasmuch as I was unabashedly vocal then, it is only fair that I be equally candid now.

One thing that caused me to hold off buying the Ion as long as I did was I didn't feel like I had a good sense of what I was getting. Marketing shots and YouTube videos are better than nothing, but I usually rely on hands-on reviews from similar enthusiasts when I'm buying a high-end gadget. And while there are many testimonials right here, I wanted to offer my best shot at conveying the experience of getting an Ion. So while I am an unqualified reviewer, I nonetheless present to you:

Zephyr Ion Unboxing

4536748394_0534b9a679_m.jpg

The packaging is simple and effective: what you see is what you get.

4536114363_ef56ff4045_m.jpg

The first thing you see when you open the box is a foam tray containing your accessories. It took me a moment to figure out what exactly I was looking at: two valves assembled with bags, two "biomatter" baskets, and a protective cap covering the "straw."

4536114363_ef56ff4045_m.jpg

The Ion itself was packed beneath the foam tray, along with replacement parts, a USB cable and the instruction manual. The Ion has a solid heft to it (6 lbs.), but more importantly it has a very solid and well-made feel. It rests very stably and has a low center of gravity. This is convenient for storage and filling bags, but I expect will make a really big difference with a whip.

4536115195_5e9b32a9ff_m.jpg

Why the magazine, you ask? One word: scale. This is not a small piece of equipment, and it will not go unnoticed on your bookshelf. I don't think it looks bad at all. I don't love it, but I don't love the Volcano either. This, however, is portable. You can pick this thing up in one hand no problem. I was also pleased to see they put a heavy duty power cord on it.

4536749978_646fe7d42f_m.jpg

Here is one of the bags laid out over the magazine, again for a sense of scale. The bags are about the dimensions I expected. The mouthpieces are clever bits of industrial design. This was actually one of the reasons I chose the Ion over the EQ and Volcano, and they don't disappoint. They are comfortable and work exactly like you would expect them to.

4536118175_a173322dd2_m.jpg

This is the chamber of mysteries where the magic happens. It has the look and feel of a well-designed device. Everything meshes together well, there's no play in the joints.

4536116147_0f7e6c7996_m.jpg

Plugged in. This thing could make a hell of a nightlight!

4536116537_de54a77796_m.jpg

Power on. It is a great display. You can tell out of the corner of your eye or across the room what's going on with it. I'm not going to lie: from the press of that big button I anxiously wondered, will this one heat up?

4536751656_a50c9f3b85_m.jpg

Nervous but scientifically optimistic: I hit a stopwatch on my phone when I hit the power button on the Ion. Final reading: 1:05. It was ready before I was. Okay, you guys have way surpassed expectations on that.

4536118767_10389bc51b_m.jpg

This is the holiest of holies loaded up with some friendly "biomatter." The baskets are a good size. They're easy to handle and easy to fill and have a respectable capacity, which has not been the case for any other vaporizer I've owned. Even the old 1st gen Vapir baskets were hard to load and easy to fumble.

I was going to use the stopwatch when I started filling as well, but then I thought it would be more interesting to see it in action. Depending on where you call it full that's somewhere between 30 and 35 seconds. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tz9B295D9ps

4536754276_f1b384a2cb_m.jpg

First bag. Wow. Thick, smooth, tasty. I suddenly wonder why I wanted the whip also? Oh yeah--in case I didn't like the bag. I like the bag, but I'm really curious to see how this works with a whip. I'm guessing it will be a different experience than my erstwhile EasyBake, uh--EasyVape.

4536754892_93c0d0acd5_m.jpg

Second bag. Looks almost as thick as the first, but is it as tasty and as strong as the first? Well, let's not jump into this too quickly here. What about these valves...can I let a bag sit?

4536755246_cd078cecd0_m.jpg

Second bag 45 minutes later. I planned to check on it after 30, but it was feeding time and hungry monsters destroy furniture, etc. The bag looks only slightly looser. The vapor definitely looks thinner, but based on how little the volume appeared to change, I would guess that's got more to do with condensation than leakage. I don't know what that means for the quality of the vapor. It was definitely thinner in taste and effect than the first. Subsequent trials showed second-bag vapor to be nearly as thick as first-, but not quite as tasty.

Overall, I'm more surprised by how thoroughly I love the bag than how I feel about the Ion itself. I enjoyed some med-grade vapors this weekend, and both taste and effect bested the other vaporizers I've owned. Initial problems aside, this device has look and feel of solid manufacturing. Obviously defects do slip through, but looking at a working unit you would have no reason to doubt that this thing would last a good long time.

@Ganjananda Nice review. I'm glad you decided to show the bags of vapor, since that's what its all about. It'd be interesting to see how many bags you get out of x amount and how thick they are, maybe doing different runs with different fresh amounts and such.

A quick note on my experience with multiple bags from the same biomass.

Let me say this is not scientific and only my personal experience and opinion:

when I put .2 of a gram finely ground into my ion I can get 5-7 bags (most the time less visable vapor each bag as I go along) the first bag tends to give me a real good sample of the taste of the particular strain I load. Excelent yummy flavor and specific to the strain... Mmmmmmggggaaaa Subsequent bags always tend to taste ( I am guessing) like the chemicals in the plant. As I go though bags I raise the temp 5 degrees each bag to blow through other sets of chemicals. Each bag changes in taste a bit according to the chemical being vaporized at that temp. I.e thc is going to taste like thc regardless of the strain, just some strains have more than others. Likewise with the other chemicals. If I just want that super flavor I load just enough to fill a bag once and vape at a slightly higher temp.

I sure would like to hear some other experiences ion users have had with this same process.**edit ** my spelling is bad and the iPhone don't help. Hah

I go 375, 385, 395, sometimes 423. I only have crappy mids though. during the day I normally just go to 375 and 385 and save abv for making swamp water.

Approximately how much does that amount (enough to fill a bag once) weigh, typically?

Not 100% on that one,.. if you cover your pinky nail with ground biomass, that should be enough... My home scale doesn't weigh below a tenth of a gram lol

for my personal use, 401 is the highest I will go. You can certainly get a nice effect at higher temps but I (like you) prefer to repurpose that stuff for tincture, swamp water or other edibles.

My Zephyr Ion came in the mail today. I had to do a lot of maneuvering to get it past my parents. I turned it on and changed it to 365 degrees. The screen stayed red forever and never turned green. I noticed the inside was hot, so I put the bag on. It pretty much charred my herb. Now, when I use it, not only does it not change to green; it doesn't even heat up.

How do I fix this? I can't send it in for a replacement because of my parents.

and this was in the box as well:

thank you. I'm worried I'm going to have to open up the Ion and screw around in there. The warranty isn't much of an issue because I can't have a new one mailed to my house.

I got it off ebay for cheaper. (250) that may have been a mistake... even though it was supposed to be new. I'm hoping someone can tell me how to fix the problem.
