There may be some controversy over who first recorded Steppin' Stone. From what I can tell Paul Revere and the Raiders released it on their album Midnight Ride in May, 1966. The Monkees released the song in November 1966.
I like both versions but the Paul Revere and the Raiders version speaks to me more. It's a little more raw and not as poppy as the Monkees version.
