POT PETITION TO DONALD TRUMP: LEAVE COLORADO, LEGAL STATES ALONE

The election of Donald Trump has raised concerns on a seemingly endless number of fronts. Note that the day after he defeated Hillary Clinton in the presidential race, immigrant children were in tears at schools across Denver out of fear that their undocumented parents would be deported before the final bell of the day.

Also anxious are members of the marijuana industry, who worry that Trump's personal antipathy toward cannabis could inspire him to try to shut down recreational marijuana businesses in Colorado and other states where they're legal — a roster that grew substantially on election day.

With that in mind, Marijuana Majority chairman and founder Tom Angell has launched a petition titled "President-Elect Trump: Respect State Marijuana Laws."

The complete text from the petition is below, but an excerpt reads, "A clear majority of Americans support legalizing marijuana, and we're counting on you to respect the people's will and make good on your word."

Why is such an effort necessary? Negative comments Trump made during the campaign in regard to Colorado's recreational pot laws offer an explanation.

In August 2015, for instance, Trump engaged in the following exchange with Fox News's Sean Hannity:

Hannity: "Colorado, marijuana. Good or bad experiment?"

Trump: "I say it's bad. Medical marijuana is another thing, but I think it's bad. And I feel strongly about that."

Then, this past March, he said the following in a conversation with MSNBC's Chris Matthews: "I think that as far as drug legalization, we talk about marijuana, and in terms of medical, I think I am basically for that. I've heard some wonderful things in terms of medical. I'm watching Colorado very carefully to see what's happening out there. I'm getting some very negative reports, I'm getting some okay reports. But I'm getting some very negative reports coming out of Colorado as to what's happening, so we'll see what happens."

Despite his misgivings, however, Trump has suggested that he won't interfere with the rights of Colorado or other places that have legalized recreational marijuana. In three videos below, he can be heard making the following statements:

“And then I really believe you should leave it up to the states. It should be a state situation…. In terms of marijuana and legalization, I think that should be a state issue, state by state.”

“I think it’s up to the states. I’m a states person. I think it should be up to the states, absolutely.”

“If they vote for it, they vote for it."

President-Elect Trump: Respect State Marijuana Laws

Mister President-Elect:

During your presidential campaign you repeatedly pledged that if elected you would ensure the federal government respect the right of states to enact their own marijuana policies, including those allowing medical cannabis and recreational use.

As marijuana law reform supporters, we are petitioning to encourage you to uphold these promises, including by filling your Cabinet with officials who will follow through on what you said on the campaign trail. This especially includes appointing Justice Department and DEA leaders who will respect state laws.

Please also include statutory changes to marijuana laws in your legislative agenda for the 115th Congress. A growing number of lawmakers in both the House and Senate have shown willingness to scale back prohibition and, with your leadership, it is likely that far-reaching reforms can be enacted.

A clear majority of Americans support legalizing marijuana, and we're counting on you to respect the people's will and make good on your word.

Herb: best aphrodisiac and stereo tweak on Earth
After watching an episode of Weediquette on Viceland about cops in Michigan busting legal
mmj providers, it's terrifying to think what Trump and Co could do to the legalization movement
the US has undergone in recent years.

Hope he picks his battles selectively and mj is NOT one of them.
But I'm not counting on that.

unbearably light in the being....
Krauthammer is wrong. Liberals think that conservatives are evil AND stupid. ;)

The problem with this line of thinking, of course, is painting a large group of people with a very broad brush. It just doesn't work.
In fairness, not all "conservatives" are both: many are overwhelmingly one or the other, the 40 years of brainwashing just helps confuse the picture.

===
Ah yes....that everlasting feature of American discourse...rampant self-righteousness...seems to be alive and well on all sides of this debate. That level of brick-thick self-certainty must be very comforting even if also blinding. Cheers
Certainly seems to be working for you

Why are those in this thread that lean Conservative unable to countenance criticisms of Trump based on the man's own words, campaign, and appointments? The response is always simply to pivot to Clinton (which is always a lazy assumption that she is corrupt) or to call me self-righteous. The election is over. Attacking Clinton should no longer serve as a proxy for a substantive defense of Trump.

I don't understand this instinct.
It's all about the hippie-punching...and the woman-shaming...and the general love of bullying in all its forms: the reason your thoughtful responses are not greeted in kind is because "they" DON'T CARE. They are not here for debate, or for discourse, or to compare policy alternatives; they are here to beat up the hippie, dismiss the woman, threaten the black, and beat up the faggot - from behind as much "plausible deniability" and "I know you are but what am I?" and "what a level-headed patriot I must be!"as they can throw.

WHOEVER responds is fair game, and contempt, insult and condescension are always on the menu. This isn't the first time we've seen this exact sort of poor sportsmanship here @ FC - there just only ever seems to be one 'on the mound'

I feel sorry for you. You will never get it. You will never understand how the dems lost the election. Its exactly because of people like you saying things like this.

Poor sportsmanship? I see this coming overwhelmingly from the dems right now. Maybe the reason you see so few folks with opposing views is because after being called all sorts of names, without merit, they just quietly went away. You will never win over hearts and minds using the race card and all the other cards that have been played so often that they have completely lost their value. Cry wolf enough times and people stop listening. The problem is when people stop talking they start fighting. I don't expect you to understand that either.

So go ahead, call me some names, I really don't care.

High anxiety: Marijuana businesses leery of Trump's AG pick

Notice around 34:45 the discussion takes an immediate downturn as soon as Sessions starts in the discussion. You get to hear the rhetoric of every Drug war dinosaur reefer madness mindset. MJ being a gateway drug to heroin. Other forms of drug use will increase with legalization. Hospitals will be filled with patients.:horse:

I hold the first paragraph above in contempt as it seems meant to be an insult (And, threat.). As to if it shows a patronizing attitude, I leave to the reader.

I would have reported the post as I don't see the purpose other than to insult and/or shut up those who disagree. But, I like free speech. Even when what is said is less than reasonable. Even when what is said is vaguely threatening.

I can only hope the decades I've spent on online social media keep me from crying like a kid who spilled his ice cream cone if someone is mean to me now that I'm "fair game".

I don't believe the hippie punching can be attributed to racism. That's not a race. But I agree, the spirit in which vitrol spills out of certain groups is horrifying. I don't know if they are aware of what they are saying. Take for example the belief that there shouldn't be welfare. Any well adjusted human who sees the shortcomings of people, and understands that there will be needs regardless is a-okay with something like this existing. Hard times abound, best to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. But the individuals who would carve welfare and prevent that mother with a job and two kids from having assistance, because they philosophically believe there shouldn't be assistance to people. Hell if I can make it, everyone can too. Nevermind the lame, sickly and needy. They'll get taken care of by the good businesses and the good-bleedin-hearts of America. One could argue that it's greed. But all sides view that coin in a different light.

I was a strong libertarian when I started off in life. I do think there are some who mask their racism with philosophy though. Those people wouldn't be able to tell you what an anti-federalist was. My party of choice. lol.

Edit: I've caught up to the other threads and it looks like they got shut down. Sorry for getting on the soapboax.

Some might claim welfare destroyed black families in America by driving fathers out of the house.

Didn't the Bill of Rights pretty much take care of the complaints of the anti-federalists?

Hey you guys. I notice the other thread is shut down in the lounge due to folks unable to carry on in a civil conversation. I really enjoy these threads myself. It's too bad all it takes is a couple of folks to get things shut down. Think before you post. You can always go back and edit too. I'm not commenting on how the mods do their jobs - we all know they are stellar.

Well, well, well.... what a surprise. This thread has not only gone off course, it's gotten hostile and unfriendly.

As @Stu eloquently put it in the other political thread:

These political threads seem to inevitably go south and end up disrupting the harmony of this forum. For that reason we are closing down this thread.

I suggest to anyone that wishes to discuss and debate politics that they find somewhere else online to do it. This is a vaporizer forum and that will always be our priority and focus. The staff is not here to moderate political discussion; I know I didn't sign up for that and have no interest in doing so.

So I'm sorry folks. You are just going to have to discuss this elsewhere cause we just aren't doing it anymore.
