Discontinued The Grasshopper

Hi guys!

I haven't posted here in a long time, and have some sad news for you all regarding the SS GH I received this august after a long year of waiting...

I have to say that since I received the unit, it has performed erratically....
It showed Sensor Damage Lights almost from the first day, but after some clicker-twisting and rattling it would eventually work and heat up, so I kept using it.
Sometimes it took almost 20 seconds to heat up, sometimes less, sometimes I just turned it off while LEDs were still red because I thought it was taking too long...
I have even combusted more than once with the unit being set at level 3... :uhh:

Obviously my unit isn't working properly... But you know... Every now and then it would eventually work and I could get my sweet vapor, so I just postponed the warranty request.

When it arrived, the charger worked well, and I used it for almost two months. Ten days ago it started showing one red/blue/red LED sequence when connected, and then stop charging.
I believe this is a new light secuence that I haven't read about, not here nor GHL's Troubleshooting Guide...
Anyone here with the same experience?
(Please notice it is not the same sequence as the sensor damage nor overheat lights.)

So that's when I bought a Nitecore d2, which I've been using since with no problem at all, batteries being in perfect shape.

Finally (and sadly) we arrive to this last weekend, and I can say now that my GH isn't working anymore. No more twisting or clicking, nor thread cleaning, or any other of the fixes work anymore.
It just stays with the sensor damage lights once you turn it on... :bang:

So I just submitted my first Warranty Request. I hope it is a smooth (and fast) experience!
I'll keep you guys updated!

By the way, I want to thank you all for posting so much useful info! You really help a lot of people out there

Peace!

A Funny Thing Happened today....

So, I have two hoppers... I just happened to be holding both hoppers today in one hand, both of them were assembled, each with a battery installed.

As I'm focusing on using my free hand to move odds and ends around on the table where I was planning to grind some fresh herb, I thought I was seeing things. BOTH hoppers were giving me a red light serenade, flashing on and off. I couldn't believe my eyes, thinking it was a play of light, but sure enough!

Immediately, I thought, "Well, screw that, I don't want to keep having this happen", so I separated them.

It's a weird hopper body / backend contacting each other!! I noticed that the red light stayed on for more than a "flash" (not long enough to assume it was "heating up"); I interrupted that particular moment by the separation of the two hoppers.

Don't try this at home, kids... there's no point to; why flirt with some weird mystery circuit issues.

Although not a fix, should this (maybe) be added to the resources page as a warning?

I am literally buying a device that acts like its a space ship in a classical anime... Breaks at the worst time but shines like a diamond when it works... I think have had to shut down so many worried feelings around the hopper fail rate to own basically this here

I cant get myself to cancel even though I could have had a Firewood 4.0 by now

I'm counting on the hopper to be the device that acts like the vehicle in this classic anime.

Haha I never saw speed racers but the description of the.. Just a car cracked me up :)

"Its name probably derives from the fact that speeds above Mach 5 are known as hypersonic. However, the Mach Five cannot reach Mach speeds. It was just a car."

I assumed this is a variation of the "touching anything metal to the clicker and dial simultaneously" thing...the one that temporarily completes the circuit, but turns off before the heater engages when it realizes what's going on. No?

Yeah that's really all it probably was; one or the other was "shorting" against the other. Easily done if all it takes is connecting the clicker to the body. In fact, that concentric ring around the clicker is an insulator.

I'm counting on the hopper to be the device that acts like the vehicle in this classic anime.

I loved that cartoon. That's what we called 'me back in my day. :myday:

Blasphemy!! The Mach 5 was never JUST a car. For one thing (and to keep this from being too far OT), it could HOP!!

See, I loved it so much that to me it wasn't a cartoon or an anime. As far as I was concerned, that was the reality that we should all be striving for.

Did I mention the Mach 5 could HOP?

First, lets say I have my hopper for almost 3 months now and I'm enjoying it. I didn't warranty it yet. This last few days I use it at around 4.5, 3/4 full of herb. Less temp stepping than usual. I never use the stock charger anymore because an external charger is more convenient for me.

I have one question regarding the battery and nitecore. How do you know using the nitecore d2/d4 display that your battery is dead or close to dying? Is there a way to know that by looking at the display? The battery is full at 4.20v (hehe) then is empty at about 3.74v. Will this change with time? Or the battery will do the same but just wont last a long time (less than a bowl) with time?

On the D4, when the battery is charging, the display shows a set of climbing bars from low to high. I'm not positive about this, but when you first put the battery in to start charging, maybe the number of bars showing at the low end of the "animation" corresponds to how much charge the battery has? If it's completely dead it starts with no bars or one bar but if there's some charge it starts at 2 or 3? I'll have to check that next time I use it.

Which will be on Wednesday when my hoppers arrive!!!!! I just got my shipping confirmation!

4.2 is always going to be full and empty will always be around 3.7'ish, that will never change, over time you will loose capacity this won't show on the charger other than the time taken to charge (as capacity is lost charge time will decrease, although with such a small capacity it could be hard to notice) there are chargers that show mAh while charging (not always accurate but can still be useful for comparison over time) and can run a discharge cycle to calculate total capacity (mAh) left, in reality you will notice the decrease under normal use like you say about it just not lasting as long as it did before.

Moon, nice! You're probably all giddy with anticipation :D
I'm sure you have all your critical tools... mainly Blue Tac! That shit has changed the game.

On the battery question... as @UnshavenFish says very clearly above in his post, whether you consider what the charger may tell you, mAh is a fairly good indication while charging, but more likely, as he states, your own discernment will likely be the better instrument!

I'm going to try to not get too worked up until it's here. (Good luck with that!) I just placed my order with Ratchett (yeah, I procrastinated the hell out of that one - don't know why) and will be ordering that Blu Tac momentarily. Tried to find some locally today and only found knock-off brands.

I forgot to mention I received my replacement body for my SS last Saturday. That's less than a week since I first sent my warranty request, not bad at all. The finish is noticeably different, oh well. I'm not that concerned about it. I do wonder if it's somewhat random or if they've switched to a new alloy or supplier since I first got it 4 months ago.

I grew up watching Speed Racer. I probably shouldn't admit this but I actually like the Speed Racer movie a lot. It doesn't have an amazing plot or anything, its Speed Racer after all. It's fast, fun, and colorful just like the cartoon. And it has John Goodman, how can you go wrong? Come to think of it, fuck it, I'm not ashamed at all to like the movie.

So after less than 8 hours from my Warranty Request, Caroline responded to it and they will be sending me a new body!! That are some great news, and a nice customer service!! Now I'll just have to sit and wait for it!

I really wish I would've sent the WR way long ago... I'm such a lazy fuck...

@Vapor_Eyes how is the new body behaving? Any issue with it, besides the aesthetics?

I'll keep you guys posted ;)

Peace!

Seems you and I are in about the same place... I have 2 hoppers on the way and am currently ordering the requisite accessories (and the not so requisite)

any day now...

Oh and I concur on stowing away in the Mach 5's trunk... just tell Speed you were looking for candy!

I received my replacement blue body finally.

It was repackaged, and I could see the hopper clearly from the outside... which IMO is pretty unacceptable, but Auspost just left it in my letterbox and ran off.
It got stuck in their conveyor belt, or something, and the initial packaging had been chewed in half (still included), though the Ti body remains flawless... not what I was expecting to find (I assume it jammed a conveyor).
Luckily I didn't buy any batteries as this may have been the first transport incident!

Other than that, it seems to perform perfectly, the colour matches although the fit of my MP is not precise (it's super close, but the threading on it is nothing to be proud of).

I have filed another warranty regarding my plain Ti's back-end, it is not performing like my blue back-end (which I've been using whilst I wait for its replacement body).
Will see what comes of that.
I need new batteries ideally, too.

At the end of the day, it's easily worth the effort (which is really not a lot anyway) because this thing works swimmingly when it is able.

I took my new blue hopper and red trap rig for a scenic walk today, which was sublime. I could have stayed there for ages. Adding a bubbler to the equation sure reduces the stealth, but you can hit the hopper directly pretty much anywhere and no-one bats an eye. I said before I can't see myself doing it, but fuck it it's the best. Easy, care free hits.

Although it seems like an awful lot of our hoppers are failing in one way or another, I'm glad to see more and more people having positive experiences with the Warranty process.

I'm with you, Vapor Eyes. I had a great time with that movie. They nailed so much of the cartoon's vibe, the color palette is insane, the Mach 5 is there in all it's drool-inducing glory, and they've got John Goodman. Everything is better with John Goodman. In fact, maybe it's time to see that again with hopper in hand.

Oh and I concur on stowing away in the Mach 5's trunk... just tell Speed you were looking for candy!

Now there's someone who knows their Speed Racer. That's cool about your buddy producing the trailer. Tell him it worked. It got me really psyched for the movie.

I have fond memories of Speed Racer too. And funny thing @Vapor_Eyes, I gave the movie another try just the other day. Visually, and casting-wise, I agree. But I just couldn't sit through it...
Sometimes I hate being a grownup.

Maybe the judicious application of some grasshopper technology is what is needed. (Wrenching the post back from OT land :).)

When my son was a young 'un, I made sure to expose him to all the important things like Speed Racer and Thunderbirds (Oh, be still my heart. I adored those ships.) The funny thing about watching the Speed Racer anime after all those years: I never realized how much yelling goes on. Just long static shots of Speed going "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!" But then, everything else was just filler until the Mach 5 was on the screen, right?
