Discontinued The Grasshopper

Out vaping at my favorite coffee shop, and not sure if you can tell, but there's a nice little dab at the tip of the GH...that isn't mine!
Looks like I'm not the only one chillin with my portable out here! They should learn to clean up though! :)
We aren't alone! Others vape!

My Grasshopper is definitely dying. It will occasionally give a good hit but average performance is anemic.

Last night I did a side by side comparison with fresh batteries and the same exact amount at temp 4 in both my Ti and my SS last night and it was like night and day. The second hit on the Ti chamber was the only good one and it wasn't even that big. All the other hits were wispy and weak, barely any vapor. I took 6 hits total and I think there's still some left, I'll probably vape the rest with my log.

The first three hits on my SS were massive, with a final clean up hit that was wispy. It was very satisfying and extracted thoroughly. That's the performance I've been used to for the last three months.

My SS almost seems to be running just a tiny bit cooler than when I got it, but that could be all in my head. it just seems that the mouthpiece isn't getting as hot as when I first got it, maybe I've just developed a tolerance for the heat. It was never too bad, even when new, but it was much more noticeable when new if I'm not mistaken.

Subtle changes in performance can make you think you're going crazy. Or at least that's what happens to me. I must have went back and forth 100 times about whether I should file a warranty claim. And then immediately afterwards I thought I made a mistake. If I didn't have the second hopper to compare to I probably wouldn't even realize there was a problem, as the Ti is actually producing some vapor.

The fact that the hopper performs so well makes testing more difficult as it's easy to get too medicated. Several of my early tests I forgot exactly where I was in each chamber as far as number of hits taken. That's because I was spacing the hits out so I didn't get too spaced out, which turned out to be counter productive. I found I just had to go for it and finish the chambers as fast as possible, it was much easier to keep track this way.

It makes me wonder if there are people receiving units like mine who are underwhelmed with performance and think it doesn't live up to the hype. Because my broken Ti actually hits okay, and has similar performance to some lower tier vaporizers. My SS is on a whole other level and lived up to the hype in my opinion.

It's funny, this issue is almost making me like my Grasshopper more, because my broken Ti is showing me how well the SS really works if that makes sense. Perhaps I was taking it for granted a little bit. When I was doing the side by side testing the SS hits were so huge and satisfying. The Ti hits reminded me how weak other vaporizers can be.

Great post!
Of course, again, sorry for the performance issue you are having... Based on how well I assume you have covered all the bases with respect to cleaning and care, if I had another working hopper to use, I'd go ahead and file the warranty. It seems they wouldn't dismiss it as "working properly". If you've done all the Blu-Tac and backend stuff, well, it seems the heater element has degraded somehow.

But on the rest of your post here, I'm with you on the frustration and even second-guessing it makes you do trying to evaluate things. It IS the best, I think, to "evaluate" this thing by pushing it to its limits.

I've come to see it this way: If a single hopper out there works "unbelievably great", then they ALL should, given the same chamber contents, 'course. And that's what seems to forgive a host of sins on faulty units. If one works great, man, this product is just in the throes of getting perfected. Sadly at the expense of disappointment to many customers, but we know what this thing can do.
And so I think it's fair to hold ALL hoppers to the same standard performance, say, going T5 and blasting away, as a means of judgement of hopper health. Point: Any other way of evaluating the hopper is too frustrating and subject to "memory". And well... Hahahaha

It's been four weeks since I got my Ti, here's a comparison of the inside battery contact:

After Four Weeks:

Sorry for the differences in lighting. I couldn't get them to match no matter how hard I tried.

Notice how the grid pattern is pretty much unchanged, despite the gold-colored finish wearing off in the center.

Also, I didn't notice when I first got it but there is a big silver gouge at the edge of the gold ring in the 8 o'clock position.

I don't know about the 8 o'clock gouge, but I can guess that the circular wear of the gold plate is from Temp Dial turnings. It may be unavoidable, but certainly can be minimized by not whipping that dial around whilst screwed on with a battery inside.

And what was the point of gold plate on a contact that will unavoidably wear from temp dial turn-age?

Maybe it's nothing more than a 5% reduction in performance when there is no gold left....

I think that was the problem so after shower I rubbed the thread of both hoppers with iso and boom red/blue lights gone! The ti went thru two batteries with no red blue lights yet so is the ss.

Some of my best thinking is in the shower :bang: Just add a shower head to that GIF. :)

Quite a good idea, to dab a tip with ISO after Blu Tack (BT), I mean, why not? However, there is scant info out there about BT's solubility. Apparently ISO won't do anything to "remove" it. I found this quote from the link just below it (it's really unnecessary to hit the link but I'm just providing the citation);

I have dissolved some Blu-Tack in some petrol and it is quite soluble (about the same as PIB)
https://www.thevespiary.org/rhodium/Rhodium/www.roguesci.org/archive/index.php/t-851.html

That said, it's a good idea, I think, to "rub" the area anyway with what we know is good to use (ISO). :2c:

Hi all, big lurker here :)

I got my hoppers on 22/august one ti and one ss after over a year of wating

Ealier I register my ti hopper and was about to claim warranty because of red/blue lights symptom but i went to shower instead, got my ss hopper with me to the bathroom clicked it on.....aaarrrrrrrgh fu*ken red/blue lights, turned off then on again red then blue took a toke ...nice.

While in shower I was thinking ...... before the blu tac cleaning I got none of that red/blue lights on any of the hoppers and after the blu tac i did not wipe the thread with iso!

I think that was the problem so after shower I rubbed the thread of both hoppers with iso and boom red/blue lights gone! The ti went thru two batteries with no red blue lights yet so is the ss.

I've noticed the red/blue lights happens to some members laterly.

I keep my fingers cross that i don't have to send any of my hoppers in for warranty:peace:
Interesting... Thanks for sharing. I'll definitely test an IPA clean on my copped out blue, however it seems this one has locked itself into the software response. Last time I had sensor issues, every-now and-then it would work alright, but it would combust if not done right.

If I had a time machine I would go back to the day I had four perfect hoppers, and I would take with me three Y-adapters

Red and blue lights on my 6 month old ss gh. Still working and performing great but have to switch on and off to stop the blinking. Hope it won't die but seems possible.
Some days ago i got a bong to enjoy some bigger hits with the gh. Used it on temp 4&5 a lot. As other users stated this could be a reason for a heater malfunction.

This is the latest and greatest from @Ratchett. It's a new scoop / poker custom designed for the grasshopper!

The last picture is to give you a size reference. And of course, you'll notice other @Ratchett goodies in the pics.

The scoop is a pleasure to hold. As you see in the 1st pic, it easily fits in the gh oven. I really think this is gonna be another must-have accessory. And it neatly fits into the case next to the tweezers! What more could you ask for...

The hopper tool looks nice, and I'm beginning to have spiral-stand envy.
Couple of weeks ago I made something very similar to the shovel end of that tool, using a drinking straw and an exacto knife. Before that I made a simple funnel and used that with a spoon. For last week or so just using fingers and putting a couple of pinches in!
Thanks for the pics!

I use a salt spoon for my other vapes, but it was just too wide for the gh oven. So I asked @Ratchett for the perfect scoop. Up till now, I've been using the pinch method like you. I found that unless you squeeze it into a little ball, it's a mess. Now I get to keep everything nice and fluffy!

And the spiral stand really IS perfect. I couldn't resist getting it with the scoop.

Hi guys... i spent my first day here reading all i can find and watch on the Grasshopper.. and i was about to order one but the forum seem filled with horror story so far..

1) Do you think all the dying and red/blue lights could be cause by being the "first batch" of GH ever produce...

2) To vaporizer noob like me, would you recommend to just wait for better GH and get a well tested portable vaporizer (dunno, let say a PAX2) or try the life time warrenty and get on board with a GH.

I really want to like the GH, but the more i read about it the more it become scary. (life time warrenty or not, it sux to loose a new toy for weeks, pretty sure you all understand the feeling.. mostly those who have waited 1-2 years backing)

That tool looks great! May pick it up if I decide to purchase @Ratchett 's GH leather case. Anyone have any comments on the case's ability to hold smell? I use Doob tubes, and after a few months of them, they aren't 100% smell proof anymore. Still good, but I don't risk it. If I can't walk past a cop with it with no worries, then it isn't preferred for me, haha. My eGo case is large, but holds everything I need, and holds the little smell that might leak from my GH or Doob tube. I'm aware it won't be smellproof, but if it can at least help, it would be a nice plus.

Also, when it comes to loading, I see no issue with Doob tube pouring into the GH. Super easy, and you never need to worry about your herb really going bad in a Doob tube even if it's pre ground, they really do hold freshness well. Also the lid slides around the body of the GH if you REALLY want to funnel something in, but I never find that necessary and like the visual feedback of pouring in so I know how much went in, and I can also pay attention to if it is a more coarse or fine grind being poured in.

That case just looks so amazing .... Ugh.

Edit: @Mr. Me2 , thought it was the MFLB brush, guess I lose :(

Edit2: without thinking, I searched "Ratchett" on Google ... I don't like what came up :( :(

Sorry, but @Ratchett's case isn't smell proof, and it wasn't designed to be. It's a fold over case with the pockets you see in the pic custom created for the gh, batteries, and doob tube. And a couple other goodies fit in there. Just so...

I have a poor sense of smell, so I'm not the best judge, but I don't find much smell from the gh. And I just love this case. But if you have odor concerns, by all means play it safe and use a smell proof one. But you could still have the gh scoop...it's not a package deal.

And welcome @DocBurN ! If you're looking for your first vape, be forewarned that it will be your first but most certainly not your last. Most here have multiples, but end up leaning on a fave. And it depends on situation or planned/preferred vaping style. You may need to experiment to find yours (if you don't already know).

I'm still in the honeymoon phase with my gh. It's my go-to and the others are gathering dust and missing me. But we are pretty much the beta testers for this new technology and there are/have been reliability issues. I tell anyone who will listen to get one of these things. Did I say I LOVE it? But in all honesty, I'd be hard pressed to suggest it as your one and only vape. I just think you should set your sights on TWO vapes (to start). How else will you know what you prefer, if you don't have a comparison? And I think pax2, with its recent price drop (because pax3 is due out any day) is a great companion vape to the gh, very reliable and solid.

Wouldn't it be great if there were shops you could "test drive" vapes?

Hope this helps.

Excellent guess! Now tell him what he's won...!!!

It's my Crafty brush, but I'm guessing that's the same thing.

Good eyes, @Vapor_Eyes. I'm guessing that's where your fc name came from ;). I didn't think anyone would notice that!
Thanks, I like to think I have good attention to detail.

I suck at picking usernames, I can never think of anything good. I'm not too crazy about mine as it's a little cheesy, but I do like the play on words (vapor eyes/vaporize).

The main reason I used it is because I almost always look like I'm high, even when I'm not. My eyes are naturally dry/red and heavy. So if you see me around town there's a good chance I'll have vapor eyes, for one reason or another. ;)

Man ... Tradeoffs /:
Everything has so little smell that I would assume it would be fine, I just worry and prepare for the worst.

Maybe I'll get one ... They're just soooo nice looking, and I'd love to support Ratchett on something like this, I've only bought small knickknacks from him.

Anyone have an eGo case and can compare the size? It fits in my cargo shorts pockets or sweat pants, but barely, and wouldn't fit in any regular shorts for sure.

The custom stitch sounds appealing

@Vapor_Eyes you have one of my favorite names on FC btw, I remember when I first saw it a year ago in the Nano forum.

And did I mention how soft the leather is???

It's like vapes - tough to find something that is perfect for all occasions. I have a 2nd case for my gh (the Livescribe for when I want to carry JUST the gh), but barely use it. The @Ratchett case is just so nice, and it holds everything I need perfectly.

Personally, I'd go with the GH. I have an SS and a Ti. I also had a Pax 2 that is now being used by a friend. I don't miss it in the least. It's the smelliest vape I've ever owned when sitting dormant and it just doesn't hit like the GH.

Has anybody bought new batteries from GHL recently and are they the new GHB2 batteries? If so do you notice any improvement? 2 of 3 of mine only last a little over one small bowl now, and this after only two months.

This is about where I'm at. Normally I've been pulling after 1 bowl to toss on the charger if I'm at home and they're normally at 3.75 after that 1. I think I normally get blinking lights before I can finish second ... Just realized, idk how far these batteries can drain...haven't looked that up yet...

Not sure how long these batteries have been used, as I didn't buy this device new. Not sure what the standard for "fresh batteries" is. @Shit Snacks , shed some light for me on how much these batteries were used?
3 batteries seems to last me a full day, but there's nothing wrong with having backups!

I really don't know about use, definitely used em, can't really say how much? GH battery drain cuts off at 3.7v, depending on bowl size I was getting 1-3 bowls maaaaybe a 4th even of small quick hit bowls, it kind of varies based on draw and temps too. I never tested scientifically

What does it mean that. "battery drain cuts off at 3.7v". Is that saying that once it gets to 3.7 volts it
is no longer able to drive the GH.
