So I just got a new flat coil heater and quart halo for my dnail. I am experiencing something strange, a very weird taste and smell is being introduced into my oil.
I have tried multiple types of oil and they all have the same weird taste from the very first hit and I cant explain it.
In order to make sure that I wasnt imagining it, I replaced the quartz halo with the Ti dish from the Infiniti base and the taste/smell went away immediately.
This is not my first quartz halo, and when I got my first one back in October, it worked and tasted great.
IS there a consensus on wether or not new heating coils give off a weird smell?
Any help would be appreciated, as usual.

Maybe try dunking the Halo and centre lug in ISO for a bit, could be machine oil. It's not the coil if it went away with the Ti dish.

not sure if this is in the right place sorry. What I need to know is, is the official dnail (US version not euro 220v Version) comparable in the UK with only a plug adapter. I only ask as I can pick up a ninja nail in Peli for a steal if so. Cheers FC

Been wanting a ninja nail for a while. It's an expensive purchase to me. Found someone in the UK selling a US version. Now. Will the US version work here in the UK with a simple plug adapter (what he's telling me) or do I need a euro nail specifically from them. They must make it for a reason is why I ask.
Anyone with direct experience or any knowledge would be great.

I got it. It's legit. So good. So high
Got my SiC Halo today, I no longer make sad faces about my broken sapphire =) Tried the first hit at 620F and was very happy with the flavor, seems to perform similarly to the sapphire, if not a bit hotter, gonna drop it down to 530F and see how it goes.

I pulled out my SiC this past weekend and I was getting great dabs at 580F.

Yup! I don't think it makes a huge difference in heat transfer but it makes it super easy to swap them as well as ensuring they're not on to tight.

interested to know what you mean by this. I run mine with Quartz halo. But I have the metal base. Then the washer looking metal peice. Then the coil with halo direct on top. Am I missing something on this?
Like to run my quartz between 267C and 297C dependant material and mood

DNail's recommendation is to run it in this order top to bottom:
Retaining nut
Halo
Heat retainer
Heater
Nail base
Like so (might not be the best angle):
You can't really see it, but the heat retainer (washer) is above the coil and below the Halo.
It's to help protect the Halo from the thermal expansion that occurs in the heating coil itself.
The heating coil is Kantham Nichrome (?), while the washer is Ti.
I haven't researched it, but I would think that with the heater going through repeated heating and cooling cycles over it's lifespan, there has to be some thermal expansion happening.
And I would think that Ti has less thermal expansion than Kantham Nichrome when heated.
I cracked my Quartz Halo by over tightening it; when it heated up, small crack.
So I have been extra careful with my Sapphire Halo, I would shit a brick if it cracked.
In addition to that, having the heating coil screwed down onto the nail by the heat retainer makes it very easy to switch Halos back and forth.

I've ran them both ways myself. The washer below the halo seems to be the best choice. One thing that I really like with the heat retainer washer and the SiC dish, that channel in the dish seems to be right where that washer is =)

Thanks for the detailed responses. It appears I can't run the Quartz like this though. When I place them on in this order all seems fine until I place the halo on and go to screw in the retaining nut, there is not enough thread for it to fill screw in. A assume this is not normal?

It is if you're using a non-D-nail coil that's a bit taller. The newer center pieces now come with longer threads to work with taller coils. It doesn't have to screw in all the way though, just enough so that it's secure.

It's on and being used at the moment but I just had a thought I'll put to use when It's cooled. Could be that I have screwed a longer thread into the joint end rather than leaving it on top to give enough room for all parts. Not even sure if the screws on either end are different lengths. Seems to work fine the way I've been using it so I'm not too worried. Will let y'all know what I find tomorrow

Do you already have a pid controler? It could be pricey if you have to buy one.
And if you have the controler, might as well get a nail. Unless your really into flowers, or no concentrates available.
