Discontinued The Grasshopper

What concerns me is that they don't seem to know why the hoppers are failing so much or how to properly fix them. At what point do we start to consider that there is some fundamental design flaw that they either don't know how to fix or can't fix it in a costly manner? As someone who owns two hoppers it worries me.

I agree that hopper has been over hyped to a degree. It's not the be all end all of vapes like some make it seem. I don't even think it's a good daily driver at this point. I was excited and bought the hopper for one very specific purpose and that's being able to get through security at concerts or other venues without a care in the world. I'm paranoid about getting caught when it comes to bringing stuff inside places and in that regard the hopper has already worked great. Was able to go through a metal detector while I put my hopper in the dish with my wallet and keys and walked right through. Easy peasy!

I just wish I felt like Hopper Labs had a handle of the situation and they could say something likely we know why the units have been failing at such a high rate and we are confident we can fix it. I still see some ppl on reddit claiming that the hopper doesn't have an exceptionally high failure rate and it's just that the people with problems are more vocal. At this point I think it's obvious it's more than that.

I'm surprised you guys are saying you don't have an emotional investment towards the hopper. I certainly do, and i am super careful with mine. I love it to death. Same with my Cloud Evo. If anything happened to either, I'd be certainly very bummed.

I got my money back from that situation where I got a batch of stuff that produced zero vapor. I paid considerably less from my previous supplier ($68 a 1/4 instead of $86 a 1/4) and it's pretty decent. I mean it's not Gorilla Glue, or White Fire OG, or Banana OG which is all shit I got from that previous guy which was incredible. However, this is supposedly Sour Kush, and I can get a decent amount of vapor out of it. That's better than the other shit I can say. I'm super bummed because that supplier was good. I just don't understand how weed can produce no vapor.

Anyhow, i'm still deciding on a case believe it or not. LOL. I really like that Kroo. I went to a vape shop that sold electronic cigarette stuff. No dice. He recommended an eyeglass case. Negatory.

Second place I went to, I told them that the Grasshopper was the next big thing in vaporizing. They were interested. I gave them the website. LOL. They didn't have a case either. Bummer.

I'm deciding if I should just splurge and get that Ratchet case from Delta 3D studios. Does anyone have any real world pictures of it?
I can take one, but it will be a while before I can post it. I got the brown exterior with black interior, and I love it!

If I bought another, I might ask for a custom alteration and add a second dedicated doob tube slot. But I feel it was well worth the money and is very practical.

Since I just pulled the trigger on the last Ti Grasshopper from www.verdampftnochmal.de and www.vaposhop.de is out of stock too, you might take a look @VapeFiend.com . He has even colored Ti's available now, but he has the highest price amongst them when converted to €

As European customer you definitively should consider chances are high you have to send it back for warranty once in its lifetime (or Hopper lab's lifetime). Personally I wouldn't by from HL directly as I'm in the same boat like you and I don't want to deal with customs and high shipping rates. And since @VapeFiend.com is in the UK I would make sure that he'll be able to warranty without custom fees or other politically caused problems by the Brexit...

Edit: I never looked on ebay, neither in the classifieds (which could have been an option to me.) If I had known I might have bought from @vapen00b ...

Just want to step by quickly and correct myself:
I don't know what happened last time when I converted £ to € but it seems I messed up something! @VapeFiend.com has the same prices like his European competition, so please ignore my previous post. But here in EU he's the only one with colored Ti's... Now it's up to you @gkaraman

Edit: I was concerned the hopper could be to hot to hit it dry for my liking. It is hot but I can finish a bowl on highest temp setting without bubbler anyways with the right technique (thx to the forum already on the very first bowl!). I loaded up a fresh bowl and started hitting at 5. The vapor was so dense I thought I combusted! Lung busting hits, too much for my lungs. Sweet spot seems to be slightly above 4 for flowers like others already mentioned.
Can't wait to try some traditional hash in it! Definitively a game changer but I guess it won't be my daily driver... At least not if I keep it using without bubbler/whip.

I think the problem with the Grasshopper's reliability is probably not inherent in the design. There are actually many people who have had functional hoppers for quite some time with no need for repairs.

In my opinion it is probably their parts suppliers that are to blame. They are probably getting a much larger percentage of defective parts then they would like.

If it was the design that was the issue it might actually be easier to fix. You can't just switch parts suppliers without a ton of hassle, and then often you are starting at square one again when it comes to quality control.

Uh oh. My grasshopper started making a clicking sound today. Is that normal? Is this a sign that it's going to die? Should I open up a warranty ticket?

Milaana. Lana. LANA. LANAAAA! (TM2/TP80/BAK/FW9)
Welp my SS is on its way back to the lab again. They had replaced only the body, so the front and back ends didn't fit quite flush. Back end could get hot, seemed to get worse with more use maybe, and it actually began to strip away small slivers from the tip of the body due to fit I guess, leaving a slight sharp edge on the body that could probably cut a finger or hurt at least.

So the whole thing is going back again, another shipping charge so they can test to be sure, but I don't see anyway they won't need to replace the entire thing. Maybe that's what they should always be doing, I guess it's cheaper not to and works for many people, but they didn't do it for me and it only led to new issues and more warranty service (though it did still work).

Just keeping y'all posted, my Blue Ti is actually still working fine but hasn't seen much use lately (just one big bowl I think since the ss returned I think actually). Will let you know how everything turn out when I know...

Oh yeah and back to back one hitter bowls at 380F through water were nuts, definitely still stand by my Cloud Evo meets Pax2 anology, just in case anyone forgot ;)

But yeah I too am not in love with it overall, especially compared to the performance of my other pure convection vapes, if anyone wants to experience my own top tier I'd recommend checking out the Milaana and StickyBricks... Ofcourse there are many others that imo outperform the hopper too, as a portable dry vape in particular. Though yeah GH is still cool as shit, and after all this time, but who knew I would prefer simple manual analog style vapes to high tech temp controlled digital ones? Didn't see that coming back when I started :2c::peace:

Oh and quick question, anyone who had a whole new Hopper under warranty, or maybe even just a back end, did you get a new serial number and re register it the next time something came up? Could you?

You can't just switch parts suppliers without a ton of hassle,

That is very true...that's why you build in QA testing and screening into your contracts for your parts, assemblies, and contract manufacturers.

These guys say that they are aerospace engineers....if so, they certainly must be aware of how high reliability products are produced. This does not require any new ideas....the basis for high rel production has been established for decades.

My GH has not hiccuped yet in a few months of use. I also don't find any technique needed. Load it, turn it on, and pull. I'm not at all sure why some few folks have problems. I will say that I well dry the herb that I plan to vape. Makes all the difference in the world.

Like others, I do cannot just sit back blithely and say "oh, the life time warranty will take care of all issues that might come up". For a life time warranty to be valuable, the company issuing the warranty must remain in business for your life time. How that plays out is yet to be determined.

Jeeziz I go offline for 2 days and I can't keep up!

And it's a sad day for me too. :(

Today's the day my hopper died. :rip:

It all stated out with a glorious plan. Today was literally my first day off in a month, after an incredible high hours push. All I wanted was to enjoy it and start my day by taking a little relaxing time with my ss hopper. I prepared everything, got myself situated, and turned my gh on... And then the weirdness began.

First it turned red, stayed red, and never turned blue. But I could feel the heater working. I took a pull... BIG mistake! I got the hottest vapor I have ever experienced from this thing. And I couldn't believe the size of the cloud after!

I turned it off and waited some time before turning it back on. I wanted it to completely cool down.

When I turned it back on, I got the dreaded red/blue blinking lights. I turned it off and tried a few things (twisting the temp setting, trying different temp settings, unscrewing the battery and checking contacts...what am I forgetting?), all with the same flashing red/blue result.

So I just made my warranty claim. Thank (insert appropriate denominational or nondenominational reference) for the gh lifetime warranty and a company who seems to take it seriously.

Oh, but to be without! I wish it was in my budget to have a backup hopper. Maybe I should crowdfund...

Well that was quick!!! Between a very hectic busy weekend I managed to register my broken ti unit on ghl website, file a warranty request and get a response within the day! I'm being sent a new body after I explained what was wrong & that I had tried the advice from this awesome forum which you many helpful guys help to create with the tips & tricks. The old body is to be sent back after I have received the new 1. I do hope the body comes through quickly as I truly am missing the subtle enhanced functionality of my ti over the ss. When the ti is back I shall be contacting vapefiend to see if I can get the ss purchased from them sorted out as well. :)

I'm sorry to hear about these sudden failures -
Seems these blue/red sensor overload lights are all the rage. I had one during the week. 24 hours later Caroline shipped a replacement body so we'll see...
I hope we can all just screw on the new body and can go our merry way.

I'm having trouble imagining that GHL's business model includes so much warranty service.

At this point I think it's obvious it's more than that.

I imagine that there are people at HL running around with hair on fire trying to stop the waste of material costs and hemorrhaging profits. Among the many scenarios, the one I hope it is NOT is if all these issues are generated from lack of repeatability in their processes. Whether it's the 3D printed heater, or the backend assembly, an issue of Repeatability would certainly explain why some hoppers work great all the time and others don't. And also, if they had a handle on what the exact problems were, then they would be able to determine by Lot Number which hoppers were then likelier to fail. Or, maybe they know. I have so many questions about this company.

So...
New body/front end arrived today (exactly one week from contacting them)... But it's not ti like old one. >.<
Hint:
A) Orange rust (ferrous oxide) in rear threads. Ti cannot rust, though it does make a blackish gray ti oxide...
And B) my magnet I forgot to put away LOVES this new one and remains completely oblivious to the old one.
So the new one definitely has some iron in it. :/
NOT what I paid for. Lil' butt hurt, but mistakes do happen. And they do look pretty similar, ti is lil less bright silver silver color... But raw ti' hopper is still down for the count.

This just blows my mind. I'm totally expecting (naively?) that the replacement Grey Ti body they send me will be as true a mechanical fit as the original matchup I had. I do intend to bitch if it isn't.

mine has always ticked changes tone I thought it was Normal but I'm not sure

The ticking is NORMAL. Caroline told me so when I'd seemed to notice it the first time. I thought it was gonna explode.

So I guess what I'm trying to say in too many words is that I'm in a weird place where I am a big supporter of the Grasshopper and wouldn't want to live without it, but I'm not as in love with it or impressed with its performance as others.

I can coax great hits out of both, but I have to work for it.

I'm in total agreement with the sentiment that the Hopper was over-hyped and it created expectations of it being the Holy Grail.... for me, at least.
Yet as excellent as it can be, it's showing itself to be more the vape that I want to take out for stealth, while inside puttering around the house, I don't wanna futz around with something 6, 7, 10 times a day. I think VAS has me again. I'll use my Pax when I go out and I know I'll be sharing, and I'll always take my Hopper for myself, but... I need a momma-bear vape at home. Christmas may come early this year.:D

Wow I'm still in shock about all these posts about the hopper not satisfying you. I have a Cloud Evo and I have been preferring to use my hopper over the Cloud. I can understand if you guys are getting frustrated and it keeps breaking and that's why you are searching. And maybe that's why I am still in love (cause it still works).

Anyhow in my opinion the grasshopper is the best portable personal vape. I also have a mighty but it hasn't been used since I got the hopper. Although I'm gonna need to use it to exercise its battery LOL

Sorry I can't edit my previous message. Too long of a time frame.

No clicking today. Very interesting.

Also I now consider the Grasshopper to be an ultimate tester of herbage just like the cloud Evo.

More hits in the grasshopper equals better quality herbage. I had a falling out with my new supplier who provided medicinal grade quality strains. Had to go back to my old guy, and boy it was cheaper by a bit, but also the quality is much lower.

I have never sent back stuff ever, except the stuff with my new supplier where I received completely 0 vapor out. At least with my old guy shit, I get 2 or 3 good hits out of it. LOL.

Anyhow my new supplier called me back and profusely apologized. And I think we are back in good standing so I can't wait to try more medicinal strains in the Hopper. Just gotta finish this lower quality stuff. And wait until he gets something good in.

As I read through these recent posts, I see a mixture of two general types of people, people who love their GH and people like me who love the novelty and "cool" factor, but have some issues, be those mechanical or personal.

I can't help but think that some of these units are working much better than others. Or at least very differently.

When I hear @newVaper420 say it's a pocketable Evo, now I kinda laugh. Not because I don't think it's possible, his could be, but because mine is nowhere near that. Comments like that are what got me to order one from eBay with two right around the corner direct from HL.

Those two are probably getting cancelled and some more batteries can get ordered. But I don't have the patience or time on a daily basis to try and get a decent hit.

I still believe the majority of issues are in the design with a smattering of QC problems. I "think" I have a cool back end, but it definitely gets hotter as the battery level drops. That sucks! Battery is getting lower and you're losing more of it to waste?

Every once in a while I get an incredible hit, it's a little hot, but full and satisfying. But it's far from repeatable and that just doesn't work for me. I can only guess that it's when my hopper stars have aligned and all is right in its world. Unfortunately it's the less common outcome.

If this were my Evo in a pocket, I'd be ordering 12 batteries and leaving my order as-is. As it stands, this is a fun toy to pull out when I'm relaxing and have time.

I'm really tempted to change my order to one SS, the harder the metal the less conductive it is. When they first started shipping, I saw a few SS vs Ti comparisons, but not many.

I'm not unhappy with this unit, but at least mine is not what I'd consider dd quality.

Maybe I'm still in the vape signature newly wed phase. Maybe I'm still in the cool new gadget phase.

I will say this. I have ordered a Mighty back in May. I used it. Maybe because I can't mate it with my Hydratube without buying something extra. But it's large bowl size (.25 for me approx) and it's heat up time did not replace the Cloud Evo for me. I also have an E-Nano that I bought as a backup when my Cloud was breaking all the time. (It's in the original Cloud thread). Anyhow, I never use the E-Nano over the Cloud Evo.

That being said, my Cloud Evo has been sitting in a box since I have got my grasshopper. I just can't believe how easily it milks the Hydratube. Now maybe there are a bunch of factors involved with why I like it more. Maybe the fact that the heater is closer to the material and not much air can get in, therefore the vapor is thicker. Again, that's an ass-umption LOL. Maybe it's the fact that I have to pull harder since the airflow is not as free.

Who knows? All I know is that in 4 years of owning my Cloud, I have never not used it 1 day when I have been home. I only pulled it out once to test that material i got that was completely bunk. 0 Vapor. I couldn't believe.

Anyhow, I have a very hot backend, and as long as it performs, I don't really care. I'm actually playing with fire today and going on a small trip (4 hours total). I'm not bringing any backup and just packing 1 chamber. I'm not taking a case and just gonna put it in my pocket with my iPhone. Should be fine. I wish I did have a little sleeve or something for it. I may wait for the Grasshopper official sleeve, or get the Ratchet case.

Anyhow, back to the topic. I have found that I also can use about .4 to .8 less using the Grasshopper than the Cloud Evo. Again, maybe it's vape signatures, or what not. Oh the last funny thing. If you look in the Cloud Evo thread, you'll see a bunch of posts from me saying my Green LED hasn't worked in a long while. The day I took it out to test the material, it had been off for a few days. The green LED lit up. Maybe it was just tired and needed a rest.

I can understand everyone's difference with every device. But if people are having remarkably different experiences with the unit, then I think Hopper's got a problem. Because I can't see anything replacing this for me in a long time.

Hi, new to vaping (started 2 months ago) just receive my hopper a few days ago. I own the gpen elite and v2 pro. I must say even with the hopper flaws ( blue flickering lights. ticking sound and becoming usually hot) . It hits harder than the elite and that's with using less than 1/2 the herbs I would use in the Elite. Oh and the Gpen elite mouthpiece also gets very hot after a few hits. Don't care to much for the V2 Pro. Love the hopper for its stealthiness and that I can just take a few hits now and then. Just hope it keeps on working with little or no problems.

last night I was using my grass hopper while charging and my battery ran out so you cant really charge while using also when this happened my charger stopped working I tried a different battery that was not completely Run down also other usb sockets and all that happened is a red flash on connection and no further flashing after pulling the charger in ant out of us and on and off of gh a few times it kicked back in to life hope this helps some of you
I'm looking at getting a d2 or d4 nitecore charger as some others have suggested

Personally, I would never charge and use grasshopper at the same time (or any vape for that matter). I know they say you can but just the heat alone would deter me. In fact, after I use it, I let it completely cool before I start charging the battery. I use a nitecore, but I would do this with the included cable.

charging a3.7 volt battery off a 5 volt usb with the correct amps should be sufficient to run and charge but I dont think the circuit layout allows power to the coil direct from the charge cable it seems that the charging circuit is disconnected when the vape is on

So i got my new backend last week and shipped my old one back and immediately asked my og owner to file the claim for the blinking red blue lights of doom and with 5 days i had a new body and bow.im actually hopping like i should..i mean dam. I have a brand new hopper, now im gonna order few brand new batts and see how that works out. Other than that im not gonna make this my daily driver as it is much much too fragile for my usage at this point. But through water it is right up there with the heaviest of the hitters and i think ive got all if the heavy hitters minus a sub. But i will use rhis beast but not much.

Second time using it w/ my fab egg (only 14mm female joint glass I have) it failed out mid session, then proceeded to give me the police-lights. Made it a few weeks of light and intermittent usage. :(

Were they fast blinking lights or slow? It is possible to cause the hopper to temporarily overheat, especially when using it with water. Rapid blue and red flashing is overheating, a slow flash is sensor damage:

Interesting comments about the Hopper and Evo.

I have a latest gen Evo and the two dont compare, Evo is in a different league. As it should be really, they are not comparable devices.

I love them both but for very different reasons. All subjective of course but my take is that the Hopper is the best portable experience currently on the market, by some margin. The Evo is by far the best desktop experience by a country mile too.

You just cant and shouldn't compare the two, if however you do, and stealth and portability isnt an issue for you then you really cannot buy a better experience than the Evo. Likewise if stealth, speed and portability is paramount then buy the Hopper.

If I had to make a choice and wasn't blessed with both, Evo hands down.

Hope that makes sense, I'm smashed to bits right now :D

I own both the 'latest EVO' & GH. I don't think there is much difference in performance between the two. The only thing I see better about the EVO is taste(but that is so subjective that my mind could be playing tricks on me & I'm unable to hookup the same glass so it's not a true apples vs apples comparison).

Try the Evo without water, thats where I find the big difference. I am a flavour hound though.
