HOW MUCH KIEF

Can anyone tell me what is a reasonable amount of kief to expect from 10 grams of Cannabis?

Is there a percentage ?

Starting with a clean grinder you could get an idea of the amount to expect for 10g by grinding 1g and seeing how much kief is produced.
It'll be different per bud, per grinder. Some grinders can be fitted with different sized mesh screens, which will affect the quality of the kief and the quantity collected.

There's also things called pollen mill sifters, which could be a good way to harvest kief, but I have no experience with them. I nearly got one on my last order...

I have found the amount of pollen you can shake free either during grinding or when in a pollen box does indeed differ rather dramatically by strain. I have some Blue Dream that drops lots of pollen. I have some Mr. Nice Guy sticky indica and it does not shed like the BD.

Both strains are in good shape, not old and not dried out. They are just different.

Now, I don't try to separate my pollen from my herb. I'm dry herb vaporist and like those trichomes just where they are. However, since some are going to come off during grinding and drying in the box, I would rather capture it cleanly than let it just stick to odd corners of baggies or other containers.

The pollen box works well for this. I grind up a bit and let sit in the pollen box to dry more for vaping. Loose trichomes fall through the fine screen onto the bottom section which is lined with glass. Scrape the pollen off of the glass and save to add back to your herb or whatever else you wish to do with it.

But a quantity pollen from a certain amount of herb....nah, there's no reliable answer to that question IMO.

If the herb is sticky and/or slightly moist, you won't get much. If it's dry you'll get much more. I never use a screen grinder unless the kief is going to separate from the flowers anyway (dry).

IME, I get more kief (trichomes) without grinding just by vaping small buds, especially in log vapes.

Thanks for the replies, but I am still curious.

How about this question: How much kief can be recovered using dry ice?

I am specifically looking to try this with 10 grams, but I can do the math if you use(d) larger amounts of cannabis.

If you are looking for the best kief production, make sure you do the freezer trick. Easily doubles kief output.

Since I was/am uninformed regarding a freezer trick I don't think I did it.

Could you please explain?

So, take a bunch of buds, the most you can comfortably grind in your grinder, and put them in the grinder and close the halves together but do not twist and grind. Just mash the buds between the grinder teeth. Then put a coin in the area with your pollen screen- a US nickel works great because it's heavy and has sharp edges, but any coin will do. Then put your grinder in the coldest part of your freezer for about 45 minutes to an hour. Then simply take out of the freezer and grind immediately, and after it's ground up take something like a screwdriver and tap the grinder for a few minutes to get the nickel to chop the kief and sift on the screen. You will find it's easily double the amount of kief produced when you just grind normally.

It doesn't take long before any condensation on the grinder is completely gone and the kief box as well as the flower that remains is totally dry.

It seems to me, very good cannabis can go up to 28% THCA per gram. I suspect average "pretty-good" is 20%. That means for every gram (1,000mg) , 20%, or 200 mg by weight is THCA. The THCA is encapsulated in plant wax. I don't know the weight of plant wax.

I think average "pretty good" for most people is probably closer to 12%, but I'm far from an expert.

Granted, the average "pretty good" is probably a higher percentage on the green coast and in Colorado. :peace: :leaf:

Yeah, the 20-28% is definitely out there to be had, I just don't think it's average "pretty good". Especially in non legal states. Even at dispensaries with lab testing I've seen mostly 12-16%, with a couple strains higher than that. The highest lab tested I've personally seen and purchased has been 24% sweet island skunk.

You also make a good point about them testing the top colas.

More on topic, I have no idea about kief yields, but I think they would correlate somehow to concentrate yields. I find my rosin yields tend to equal the percentage of THC in the strain I'm using.

Perhaps kief yield is a fraction of that. Off the top of my head I will say 1/4. So for example, with one gram of 12% THC flowers I get about .12 grams of rosin in my experience. So I think the kief yield would be around .03 grams of kief. I could be way off base with that number.

At first I thought it would be roughly the same yield as rosin but it seems with sifted kief you are only getting the heads of the trichomes and leaving some goodness on the flower. The question is how much.

I would love to hear someone with more knowledge comment on my completely unfounded theory.

If you're using a grinder, your kief will not just be heads, but also some plant matter. This means you can get well beyond 25% yield even if the bud is 25% THC. With some really dry buds I've gotten 50% yield, granted the kief wasn't full melt hash, it was kief with some plant matter. I don't make kief any more, but when I did, the rule I used to determine if it was too much plant matter was if I could take a pinch of kief, press it between my fingers, and it suck together, it was pure enough. If it didn't stick together there was too much plant matter
