Concentrates for Noobs - Q&A

Thanks. I coincidentally mixed my first batch yesterday. I mixed one gram of decarbed concentrates with 135 grams (10 tablespoons) of coconut oil and one teaspoon of lecithin granules in a sauce pan on my simmer burner. I let it sit at around 200°F for about 20 minutes - just long enough for the lecithin granules to fully absorb into the mixture.

Later I swallowed one tablespoon of the mixture and got quite buzzed... :)

It did not taste unpleasant but it definitely felt uncomfortable n my stomach so I will probably use the rest in something else - maybe salad dressing or brownies... :)

Wow, that's a lot of coconut oil. I use a 1:1 ratio at most.

But I'll see if I can get @amberevil to chime in, he has been my medible guru from a distance for quite a while. I know capsules can help, but he might know more.

Peace and good things to you my friend!

ADDITION: (Had to get off phone and onto a computer), Hey FC has a really good forum on cooking with cannabis, and they cover a lot of different types of oil to cook into.

If you're interested, it's over HERE.

And @momofthegoons has some awesome charts in a thread, click HERE to take a look.

Peace again!

Huh, really? So for every gram of concentrates, you add one gram of oil? That seems incredibly potent. Oh and I should have mentioned that the reason I used that concentration is because I oil pull and figured I could medicate and contribute to my oral hygiene at the same time. I typically use about 1 TBL per session and .1g of concentrates seemd like a pretty potent amount. Hence, the 13:1 ratio...

Well, my primary use was / is sublingual if decarb'ing. So one drop of resulting oil under tongue or three in a capsule if doing medible via ingestion. :p

Skunk Pharm recipe is 3g coconut oil to 10g decarbed oil!

Yeah, I had a feeling you were dosing sublingually. :)

So, after last night's medicated oil pull, I pretty quickly decided to keep the two processes separate. My next batch will probably quite a bit more potent so I can try the sublingual route too. I am in my medible infancy and am enjoying every bit of this adventure. :)

Oh and yeah, I saw the Skunk Pharm recipe. Their anointing and holy shit recipes both look super intriguing. Have you tried either?

Oh and one more thing:

>> The Man Lies - THERE. ARE. FOUR. LIGHTS! <<

Is that a Star Trek reference? I used to race sailboats (international 14s) with a guy who mentioned something about four or five lights from Star Trek. I never watched any ST (or Star Wars!) movies so I have no idea. I used to b an engineer on Microsoft's Windows team. I have a feeling I was the only developer on the several thousand member team who has never seen Star Trek or Star wars...

Maitri,

I thought I mentioned it, but yes Skunk Pharm's "Holy Anointing Oil - Oral" recipe is what I use, or something pretty close.

I use their decarb method almost exactly, mixed with some tips from other parts of their website on polishing and making the "mash" one starts with to make an absolut. I don't do a second wash on my QWET anymore - one 5 minute frozen wash. That's it. Gives me a 10:1 (dry herb / finished product) return after purge where I used to get 7:1, but for me personally the results were worth the loss in weight.

But any instructions from anywhere are only a start. We don't have to try doing stuff blind any more - I use and need the folks here on FC.com to ask questions, make mistakes and laugh at myself, etc. and there's always someone online no matter when I need help. And you'll see experts in every area, it's pretty amazing.

And yup, I use that phrase you mentioned, it's from Capt. Picard, so that was Star Trek Next Generation. It's about a Romulan torturing him to try and make him say that he sees 5 lights and not 4. (And so I use it as a social statement) I love it because Picard later admits in some humiliation that he WAS in fact starting to see 5 lights! And I can start feeling like that here on planet Earth...

Peace!

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too
Hey guys,

Quick question.

Can excessive heat turn shatter into wax/crumble?

I recieved an order of a couple grams of concentrate in the post.

Thing is, it was in my mail box most of the day and we had a heat wave here in GB and I suspect my mailbox was 100+ fahrenheit.

Could this excessive heat mess with my concentrate in this way.

Some of the oil had leaked and run out of the parchment and what was left is basically soft wax and crumble. It still smells nice and terpy and is the same golden color it normally is.

Is it still ok?

In a word yes. I make BHO for myself and I can never be sure what comes out. Sometimes I make shatter and few days latter it has turned into budder or wax. Making a stable concentrate is quite an art and temperature plays a huge role. Pity about the leakage!

I would not worry. It all seems to have roughly the same effect. Enjoy!

Love when I have to noob it!

Pie plate of shatter at 100F, I agitated with razor a BIT to move it around because I just can't just leave things alone...

Some of the result was very dry...something, like a grey crumble but not oil I am thinking, when I went to scrape.

Re-dissolved (not enough for me to go polishing crazy and I have filtered as far as I can - 0.5 micron mesh - without vac-assist) and I'll give it another shot, but wondering if agitating towards end of purge did something.

Starting mash was QWET, well strained, BUT did have some kief in original material, but was still mostly bud.

Peace everyone!

@h3rbalist you should be fine, worst case is you lost some terps in the heat. Consistency will change. I have some shatter that a corner of the gram buddered up. Vaped fine and tasted great =)

Winterizing seems to stabilize the oil. I have some flake/crumble that is not winterized. Lots more terps but the texture is paste like and waxy. Winterize, then purging it makes shatter like glass and also lost a good bit of terps. I'm not a fan of my concentrates shattering, so anytime it's more pliable I'm a happy dabber.

That is not a drug, it’s a plant.....
Good thread. I have about a half gram of wax that tastes really bad when dabbed, but has pretty good effect...got it from a friend. I want to try and winterize it with grain alcohol to hopefully get rid of the bad flavor. This will be my first ever attempt at winterizing. After the 48 hour freeze, I'm thinking about adding a drop of Pan's Ink (terpenes) into the mix right before straining to add back any lost during the process and to help the flavor. Wondering if anyone has tried this or has an opinion about the soundness of my thinking.

If it is a sulphur-y bad taste winterizing alone won't be enough, I have had the stuff before and always just give it away to someone who asks why I don't want it. After research I am led to believe it is from a powdery milder treatment just before harvest, to possibly fix it, see this:

Thanks for the feedback. I will check out that Reddit thread and hope that I haven't been inhaling sulfer or powdery mildew.

@063_XOBX that was seriously a huge solid you did me there personally, that was a great answer to something I experienced personally. Science-ey science to the rescue once again, will be nice once we can finally get that in spades. (I think that time's a comin')

One thing I no longer do when making concentrate is move it around. This nearly always seems to result in budder/wax. The only way I can get shatter is to leave it alone. I blast into a perspex dish lined with oil slick. I leave it to evap (outside of course!) in warm sand (instead of water). When all the visible butane has evaporated I take the oil slick sheet and transfer it into my vac chamber. I put the vacuum chamber in a shallow dish filled with sand which I place on the griddle. I make sure my vacuum chamber doesn't get much above 100F. This usually gives me shatter but on my last run I got wax again. A very beautiful bright yellow wax that tastes good but not shatter. I guess it remains an "art".

@DrRishi I think you're spot on!

This was the last pyrex plate I had done a run without slick sheets (@DieHard turned me on to them, that was the day I decided NOT to give up making shatter) and I will be doing a run here soon with that new method. (Didn't like last flowers for a QWET run). I re-dissolved and it looks better, will scrape when health allows over the next day or two and post over in dab stash thread.

So I'll remember for my upcoming shatter run - "No touchy touchy"!!!

Peace and thanks!

I know not everyone has the space, capability or a liberal enough government but if it is in any way possible I would advise everyone to grow their own. The quality is top and you know exactly what's in it.
For most people a couple of plants is enough for personal use. I grow for two and we do about 3 harvests a year. I turn most of it into BHO but always leave some nice tops to vape in the Crafty. We are getting steadily better and we are starting to build up a bit of a reserve. With the advent of a new generation of LED lights (COB) which now surpass the classic MH and HPS bulbs in light generation (photons), use half the energy and produce a fraction of the heat. Still a bit expensive at the moment but prices are dropping rapidly. Even at current prices all the equipment pays for itself after the first harvest. I love having mason jars full of beautiful bud and a suplly of BHO in the fridge instead of endless trips to the coffee shop.

We will not speak of it again!
Well of course...

I have found in some situations I just suggest "...and if you have access to the grower..." and keep the comments that follow to the big stuff that might blow their mind and apply to concentrates or vaping (like, asking the grower to harvest yours a little earlier or later can change the THC ratio from head high to mellow high, or how their timing of flushing can make a HUGE difference when making absolutes), etc. Like if it's "up and up" and not me trying to shuck and jive. (And I do SO love to speak of the unspeakable "gee" word...)

There are some legal states where there are at the least co-ops, and so those questions are regularly asked with folks trying to tweak out the best concentrates. BUT...I am *not* a moderator at FC nor do I play one on t.v.

Moderator, right? Forum Gurus? Vault-Tec Overseers?

Trolley operators...? :myday:

It's quite funny really. I live in the Netherlands. Here everyone is allowed to grow a few plants but concentrates are treated as hard drugs and you would get the same penalties as for the nasty stuff.

You would think that during these times all governments would have much better things to focus on rather than chasing people growing a few plants or consuming some fine concentrate.

Cheers

IIRC even in California growing plants and possessing concentrates are both legal but actually making concentrates is still illegal.

actually I believe it's only BHO products that are illegal to make in CA.
not illegal to BUY mind you (the wonders of our system!)

sorry for an addendum post, but I missed the edit window :)

Hopefully the new laws will have a structure for those want to use this solvent, but training, equipment, maintenance issues would all have to be included. You all know how many Darwin nominees have blown their garages, apts, and kitchens up making BHO without adequate ANYTHING listed above... NOT helping our cause, and likely poisoning people with their homebrew (here, take this hexane along with you now).

Hoping to see more rosin presses, vacuum process ethanol, multi-fractionate distilation, super critical CO2 (carefully tuned to include terps, and with a rigorous cleaning/calibration schedule). I guess there would be some ISO folks too, and the same thing holds for processing it as BHO, purge-city.

I've got some other ideas I'd like to try, but the whole being jacked up thing...
many possibilities.

Hey if anyone in WA samples any Willie's Reserve, I'd like some reviews if that's possible?
They launched last week I think. They launch in CO next month some time I think.
Waiting to see what OR and CA do, but it looks very good. Would love to find a clean source for my friend who lives outside of Vancouver... lots of issues, but seizes BAD when he gets stuff with pesticides, fungicides, etc. They are supposed to be using a pretty strict organic protocol.
