Sorry- I meant the glass that holds the vial. Just asking if reading the temps at the glass has more meaning than directly on the heater. Hippie's last post describing the gap between the heater temp and the amount of time it has been on has me asking.

not sure i understand, but ... the BBQ thermometer is measuring the hottest part of the oven glass, while the temperature controller is measuring the hottest part of the heater coil ... the time delay between reaching vaporizing temperature above 385°F and getting a cloud is (i'm thinking) due to needing to melt the trichomes from radiation, so the hot air can vaporize the thc ... there is not enough heat capacity nor heat transfer to do the total melt/vaporize job.

now, if i had a tube filled with glass spheres as the heater, like your design, i think things would be vastly different. i definitely plan to try that, and i have to keep pulling my hand off the keyboard - it is trying to order borosilicate spheres ... back, Igor, back - don't get distracted ... this nichrome ribbon could be the slippery slope that sends me back to research mode, when i have leather to order, cut and assemble.

Oh, gotcha. I guess I was too focussed on the pic. I did not see the second probe. I need to read more and maybe vape less while reading.

I hope you cross the finish line! I've enjoyed and have been inspired by the race.

oh, man ... i am totally in love with this new heater ... i'm seeing at least 35°F per second heat up - and maybe 3x faster to vape temperature. overshoot is too much ... i need to stop the max current startup sooner - it is finally time to measure the startup heating rate and adjust accordingly.

i keep reaching for the test rig, so i finally replaced the pcb in my upstairs Cube with this new heater.

Sidebar: i have about 8 pcbs populated (with components) and waiting for a cube ... which has been deferred to learn about leather craft.

Anyway, i have the new heater in a cube and i see much more stability ... can't inhale the heater down, and due to the untuned PID algorithm parameters, temp increases with a hit (minor annoyance to be dealt with later).

this is still very preliminary testing, but i think there is fuller extraction at a lower temp. the abv is a deeper golden color. subjectively, the high is more intense.

too bad i don't know anyone who can turn this into a product ... i spend my days with well water pumps (hopefully resolved), windows updates, and trying to make a living.

interesting, all very interesting ... i am spending the last half of my 60s in surreality.

Did you consider working with Ed/TNT? He could produce the cube part and you would assemble the guts... Just throwing the idea...

I've been working with leather for a number of years.
I've been working with leather for a while myself. I'd offer to help too, but I charge $300/hour and I don't think @Hippie Dickie has that kind of scratch in his budget.:whip:

wow, not much progress since 5/21 ... although i did get a digital scale with .01g resolution (Prime changes everything, Bezos!, amazing - a man with the long view) ... so, i have discovered my typical load is 0.12g (1/8 gram) - this is about 7/8" of the vial, gently loaded, i.e. not packed, with herb just dropped into the vial until 3/4 full - we wants lots of air flowing around and through the herb for maximum contact with the trichomes.

lately, i seem to have fallen into a SquareSpace black hole - see, US retail economy has collapsed around my current, 16 year old internet business, and i am now attempting to program my way out of a grim future ... not that any of this is new, i've done it several times before ... but still gut wrenching, eh? just when i think things are going swell, some fucktard goes and starts a war (or 7) ... such is life.

too bad paraphernalia is illegal to make and sell. (yeah, yeah, sucks to be me).

(should have started this post "Dear Diary", eh?)

my fitness routines are keeping me sane ... i just added the 100 pushups per day challenge (inspiration from icmag . com/tokers den).

and lots of testing of the new heater design using nichrome 80 ribbon ... cataloging some design variations i want to try: one less loop around the oven tube (am i getting too much radiant heat on the herb?), no gap between loops (that creates maximum heater efficiency, but the resistance should drop to nearly zero, so wtf would that do?), ... as my gf says "you think too much" ... maybe she's right ... i'll give it some thought.

but no progress on the leather case and leather processing issues ... sigh.

I really like what you've come up with here, I hope to try it someday if you are successful.
My only concern would be the draw stem or mouth piece, whatever you want to call it... Kind of don't like how you have to hold it on there like that to take your draws. Any other ideas for the design on that part? Maybe something more snug you can just insert into it. Anyways...
Good luck and stay vaped man.

thank-you for your comments and good wishes ... once upon a time, i did try having the draw tube inserted into the cube, and almost immediately thereafter i was reaching across my desk and hit the tube and knocked the cube over and the tube shattered when it hit the desktop. i decided at that point that the glass pieces should always fall away from the cube when being clumsy ... i mean, how much attention do i want to devote to my device when i'm medicated.

i've thought about adding a wire holder that would clamp around the cube and hold the draw tube against the vial, but hey, after using the Bud Toaster for so many years as is, i'm perfectly happy the way it is designed.

the key design feature of this vaporizer was ... small and simple.

over the 15 years (!) i've been working on this vaporizer i have tried many, many different approaches ... in fact, most of the designs i read about on FC reflect a lot of ideas i tried and rejected ... and i think the key thing is that i had the luxury to actually try to use the designs and after several months of intense vaping the flaws expose themselves, and it's back to the drawing board.

i want all glass, computer controlled temperature, digital temperature display, small and battery powered, and that's what i have ... i don't expect everyone to agree with (or like) my approach ... as the price slasher in Gilroy used to say, "different strokes for different folks" ...

and i do stay vaped!

Ah i see. Well then, that does make sense.
Wow,I had no idea you had been working on/testing this thing for that long.(i haven't exactly read all the previous posts yet, sorry lol) Nice. I respect how you know what you want and made it perfect to your liking:clap:. Wish i had the skills for a project like this. Maybe someday. And yeah its like you said "different strokes for different folks".

Ive been thinking a lot lately about designing my own style convection vape. Maybe based on a similiar design as yours, only I would prefer something shaped a bit differently (perhaps more cylindrical) and would probably design the stem to be insertable like I mentioned (to each there own, personally I'm very careful about never dropping a piece or vape, just how I am )

But seriously, that thing is pretty awesome man,how do I get my hands on one?

(perhaps more cylindrical)

interesting ... i actually tried that shape, and i liked it a lot, but it was hard to get the correct tooling for fabricating more than one or two - at least the way i had it designed - there are pictures in the first half of this thread. however, the cube is much easier to mill.

how do I get my hands on one?

put 5 bitcoins in a plain brown wrapper and ... j/k ... maybe later this year ...

a nice way to end the month ... i just placed an order for 20 printed circuit boards for the power pack ... should ship tomorrow ... so, ideally enough for a run of 10 complete demo packages. Heavy weight copper (2.5 oz) for better current flow, notches on the ends to position the battery cells optimally for soldering, and a cut out so the Deans female plug can be mounted flat against the board and soldered ... i need to do this for the pcb in the cube, too ... makes a bunch of fabrication steps go away and is the most reliable of any configuration ... will NOT be a warranty issue, ever.

and, so, with a little time on my hands i've been rethinking the case, yes, this will be Case 41 (!) ... but i got to looking at Case 40, and i think i can cut the build effort in half ... i have the new matte board and leather templates laid out (i use MS Publisher as a CAD tool, which i think it is perfect for my desktop size projects) ... just need to try it. Then order a bunch of leather.

making a little progress, which always feels re-invigorating on such a long term effort like this ... AND cross one item off the punch list.

got the custom boards for the power pack yesterday ... single-sided, and the solder masks are where they should and shouldn't be ...
picture.php

... not too bad for a first iteration ... the cutout for the Deans female plug needs to be 1/32" wider on the right side ...

picture.php

easy enough to adjust for these first couple of demo units ...
picture.php

picture.php

added the 26650 cells ...
picture.php

picture.php

cover all the conducting surfaces with Gorilla tape ...
picture.php

then add the leather cover ...
picture.php

next step is testing with the cube with the flat ribbon nichrome 80 heater ... my last handmade pcb can deliver temperature increase of 35°F per second worth of current ... this version will be the maximum possible current flow without getting all crazy expensive custom with what i don't know ... but, ya know, 15 seconds to vape temp is fast enough.
