Discontinued The Grasshopper

Thank you so very much, MoltenTiger.

First let me say that I agree completely with you and kingfisher...as I said above, I really think we need to adopt the attitude that vapes are household appliances, that our expectations of product and company should be commensurate, and that we should make excuses and come up with all kinds of body english to justify vapes that fall short of that standard (said justification being very vigorously pursued in the FC thread of another new portable). Successful vapes should "just work" IMO.

Thank you for the above. I do have a New Vape fine grinder that I like VERY much and with which I grind and dry herb for Volcano and conduction vapes. I will indeed try some in the GH, don't know that its pixie dust, but it is fine and it is dry. Perhaps I will find as you did that between fine and medium grind there ain't much difference.

Cheers
Cheers Baz :)
I will elaborate a bit more, now I'm not adding to a massive wall of text. Sorry :ko:
The amount of material and how it sits in the chamber differs the most between grind consistencies, and for sure if you use a chunkier grind it takes less herb to fill the chamber (which will again aid convection transfer, the flow of the fluid (air) over the material).

I call it pixie dust because it really is an unachievable consistency through any other means.

I will again underline it is the evenness of the grind which benefits any form of vaporisation over the actual size of the material, unless system-conduction transfer is the primary heat source (eg. Pax) where density becomes most important.
With convection, air flow is vital, and so maximising this will offer the best result.
Also, by having even size particles, it promotes an even transfer to the individual parts of the material smoothing heat curves and promoting sublimation.

It's all anecdotal, but it's only really something to consider if you directly compare, and even then tolerance negates any real testing :)

Thanks for the great posts. Again...I've only seen the GH so it is still a bit of a unicorn to me. I still wish to know how pixie dust for example....stays within the GH chamber without falling through the built in bottom screen...or without being sucked through the mouthpiece screen during inhale?? The built in screen certainly isn't tight enough to prohibit bits of material from falling through or being sucked through the screens are they? How is this handled...and where do the micro bits fall through to?

Yeah I wanted to touch on this too, but I refrained because I don't have my hopper to reference.
My memory has of course been too vaporized for confident comments.
I was going to say that I had no trouble with the fine grind at all heater side, however I did also want to mention that the GH mouthpiece does leak fine particles (which will always happen, it's part of what we're inhaling). It's quite noticeable to me when cleaning my glass, but I usually would use a whip (EQ vapour bongs) which hides that aspect. A waterpipe creates more suction than using the GH directly too.

It does promote me to use it through a waterpipe, it just feels like the right thing to do.
Plus ammonia, plus possible pesticides and all sorts of nasties (backwards laws limit quality control).
Anything water soluble you don't want and can easily get rid of, it just makes sense.

All that said, I don't think I've noticed any material except for top layer kief (best if properly sandwiched) flying into my mouth using it normally. The heater side screen is finer though, and there's two there.

SHn4hpR.jpg

^not my snap but that's "pixie dust" next to a SCS. All that together would be my personal choice. Might need like 5-10 hoppers but I'd take the challenge

I think the holes in the silver front screen of the chamber are ⌀0.3mm but there's another screen below it which could be as small as 0.1mm
The Grasshopper Inside the chamber
grasshopper-mouthpiece-chamber.jpg

An even finer screen seen courtesy @BuzzDanklin which could be the size of the screen below.
Whatever the case, it's not much of an issue and possibly remains the cleanest part of the vapour path. Just be cautious with powders and liquids/resins.

Waiting for my Hopper and haven't tried one yet but I came across this and it seems like it could be used to make a DIY mouthpiece as its basically silicone putty....could actually see a lot of uses for different vapes come to think of it. Anyone ever try this stuff?

Yeah, saw that and it's a concern but it also describes it as Silicone which is what the GH mouthpiece is made of...and you're not ingesting it

Dude didn't you read my posts? Too small of particle can and does get through the screens.

Sugru, interesting.

Surgru is formerol, a patented silicone elastomer.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugru
https://sugru.com/pdfs/tds.pdf

Operating temperatures are between −50 and 180 °C, it is thermally insulating and can last 13 months. Probably a lot less if heated constantly.

It should be relatively safe to use with a grasshopper, but I would avoid using it in the vapour path, it's probably inert, but the fact it has a relatively short shelf life means it's not overly stable and could be carcinogenic like burnt toast. It's also probably porus and would congeal with oils - like the silicone mp with the hopper, though that can handle much higher temperatures and is probably stable for a much longer time.

Hahaha....Oh I fully support banter and making sure the horse is dead don't get me wrong..just think its important to remember and vape in between breaths...;):peace:
Given how I assume you'll be spending a good portion of the weekend with your new friend, it's especially important for you to remember to breathe in between vapes.

ENJOY! Give us your impressions and don't forget your warranty registration.

I would not use Sugru - you don't want to be putting your lips on it, nor do you want it in your vapor path - the grasshopper get's HOT, maybe not 180C hot, but hot enough.

If you want something genuinely safe - I recommend you go to a local aquarium store and buy some aquarium silicone sealant - thoroughly mix an ounce of this stuff to a few teaspoons of corn starch. Boom, you've just made homemade sugru

Ok so I'm not trying to be dramatic but just took my first GH load and...well words aren't good enough but ill try...

I have been enjoying miss Mary Jane in all of her glory for 20 years straight now just for reference..vaping for only about 6 mos. I have an annoyingly high tolerance as I'm sure many of u do..and am particularly fond of big cannabis hits.

This thing is REAL. It hits HARD. It's super easy and honestly if you're used to smoking it's not too hot at all..imo. I used it sin silicone. First best impression was how hard I could pull. The hit just gets stronger as you pull which is the opposite with every other vape I've used. I can't wait to use my burb with it...

I truly believe this vape will help me continue to fuck combustion...lately I've been craving a joint or a good old fashioned bong rip but I think this thing just curbed it...

The other thing is in my life I can't always spend 30 mins plus seshing and it was getting tough getting to were I needed to be medicated-wise in a timely fashion and I have several diff vapes...I just spent literally 3 mins in the garage and I'm feeling superb!;)

I used seemingly a negligable amount of herb medium grind also for the record..

I've obviously only used it a few times so we will see what the future holds but man am I glad I found this thing!!

Geez..it's strong too I can feel the indica creepin in:chill::smug:

Now back to my grapefruit kush!! A very happy Friday to ya'll!!:ko::razz::cheers:

P.s Battery does die quick def buy like 2-10 more!!;)

P.s.s. Yea...water is unreal...I may as well be combusting bong rip styly...it's almost like I'm tricking the joint smokin gods!!:):)

Congrats and take a rip for me. I won't get to have the experience of my first GH pull for a while yet.

And remember to breathe between vapes!!:dog:

Hey there, Molten - ran full chamber last night with the New Vape Fine Grinder material I use for conduction vapes and my Volcano. Nice and dry also. Worked BRILLIANTLY! I am very happy with the result and it seems to fit exactly my desired use case which is a couple of few quick hits and set it down. When compared to the chunky hand grind, the vapor was fuller and denser with finer grind and started to get really thick on the second toke vice 4 tokes down the line with chunky. Next up is partial loads. :-)

New Question: How do you clean heater chamber/heater side screen? No matter the grind, some material will eventually fall through the heater screen, right? At a minimum, trichromes and leaf dust will fall down there (I think my pollen box screen is maybe 100 microns, yeah?). So, is there any way to get in there and blow it out/clean it. Maybe from battery side (yes, I need to do my own independent investigation but my GH is a loaner so I hesitate to fool with it too much).

Cheers

For those worried about material falling through the bottom screen into the heater, STOP worrying about it. I don't know if that happens or not, what I do know is after using the GH for just about a year now, that isn't a problem, it's never come up even once.

In general this vape is about as low maintenance as it gets, I've probably replaced more grasshoppers than I've cleaned! (and by that I mean in the past year I'm in my 4th hopper although I've had my current one since December and I've cleaned it twice in those 6 months

Oh man, I'm green with jealous rage right now

I just FOD'd (first of the day'd) a nice EQ hit which has got me steezed.
Pretty stoked my hoppers at HL, ever since I found out the PO clerk didn't give me the parcel tracking she said she sold me, I was expecting some crazy long delivery time.

@Bdubbdiblets good luck in your fuckcombustion stage. Grapefruit Kush :o
You'd be crazy to set that on fire! I kept some Fruit Punch for like 3 months just for the hopper. So worth it.

@Baron23 winning
How do you clean the heater screen? Very carefully, if at all! Use only the highest % ISO
I think that as long as you are careful to keep airflow in one direction, herb falling through the screen isn't something to worry about.

it would be great if there was a GH with a larger diameter (18650 battery).
For at home that would be awesome, because the battery does not have to be constantly changed.

Kermitts right! My only gripe so far is the batteries are always needing a charge even after one load sometimes...buy lotsa batteries!! I have my extras in the mail today from HL. This should solve the prob...

I do admit tho I have yet to use the charger due to all of the user negativity on here and reddit...can anyone out there vouch for its use and calm me down..really don't even want to think about warranty this soon!!:)

My only gripe so far is the batteries are always needing a charge even after one load sometimes...

That fact dissapoints me also, after 4 days with the grasshopper I am charging it for the 5th time and the battery is always flashing red when reaching the end of a bowl.
I load it with a fluffly ground 0.1g herb, it fills the chamber nice without tapping it down. I start at temp 3 until there it no cloud on the second 10sec-draw. I dial to 4 then and get another 3-4 hits with clouds but after that the red light flashes while pulling, battery drained.
That's a little sad, I knew that the 3-4 chambers from the official F.A.Q. were to good to be true, but two chambers I expected to be manageable. Even stepping from 4 to 5 on the last draws to fully spent the material is not possible.
To verify this I vaped the last bowl at a constant heat level of 4 and exactly when the clouds are gone on this temp the battery dies, no chance to squeeze the herb a little more.

But as long as the battery lasts I'm having good times with this vape. :)

I was getting 2 bowls from all my batteries (which is way too little), 1 bowl seems faulty.

Anyone ever use the focus bubbler at puffitup for the hopper? Seems like it would work perfectly...:brow:

Had my hopper a couple months now been a slightly bumpy ride at times but so much fun (although I may need to send it in at somepoint, unless it stops fixing itself), I wanted to wait a while before posting much as from the first day it felt like it was designed just for me, ticks every box I had on my wish list.

I have 3 batterys and get 5-6 bowls from each so need 2 more to go a full day with just one charge, charging at 1A has them full in 30-35 mins so not a big deal really but less time charging means more time vaping, I keep the temp between 4.5 & 5 and finish a bowl in 1-2 hits (although i have some lemon diesel that does take an extra hit to finish)

Last week on Wednesday I got the red/blue flashing light, hopper didn't work wed/thur then Friday I rang vapefiend to check on warranty procedure and it started working intermittently, it started with around 7-8 bowls of around 30 working and has now gone to 20-25 bowls of 30 working as normal so I'm now trying to see if I can figure out when it stops which of the many (probably pointless) things I try gets it working again, although I'm sure it's the temp sensor (from watching the video on gh site) that's on its way out but I have had no combustion and it ain't shit the bed completely yet so figured with a lifetime warranty and backup vapes for my backups there is no rush.

Got a small case from Amazon to help keep everything dust free and in one place...

So many other things in my head I want to cover but think that's enough for now, but I will say that the hopper has taken over from my butane vapes as my most used so I will need to also get a ti hopper when vapefiend gets their next batch because...well just because :mental:

Haven't used the charger yet..don't wanna bust my hopper;)

That being said I have a charger question, I have 4 batteries and a nitecore so I can certainly manage but I feel that using the charger could be beneficial at times like mainly in the car. Any idea if charging in the cars usb..new toyota..is UL and all good? Or Apples wall adapters are they UL? Also just in general any idea if the charger itself is all good?

Love this thing just need to figure out its charging qwerks as this will be my daily doser:party:

I'd be careful. I'd say that official car USBs would be UL listed, but I plugged mine into a 2.1A adapter via 12v cigarette lighter plug. This made the charger brick make some truly funky sounds and then I had problems with it not working.
Apples wall adapters are fine, iPad ones will be better (charge faster).
