I didnt really know the purpuse of this tread outside finding if others do like me. Maybe we will discover something through discussing?

I started vaping with the solo, doing slow long intakes. Pulling from the lungs, but I wasnt consious of it. One session, I tried roughly pumping with my mouth, fighting the resistance of the solo. It resulted in getting higher, with less throat irritation. Btw, I wouldnt drink any "soft drinks" when younger, because they were they were too harsh for my throat..

Now, my vaping exp is way smoother when I mouth pump. I litteraly cry from pain trying to pull a wispy cloud with my lungs from my friend e-cig, but mouth pump dense smooth clouds.. Its that different for me. I can chase way bigger clouds while mouth pumping.

How do you vape and why?

Lungs. Why? Well, when I used my MFLB, I micro hit it. With my FlashVape, I don't totally enclose my mouth around the stem when I draw and the reason is because I like to mix some air with my vapor to help cool things down. When I use the transfer tube with the LSV, I puff on it like a cigar taking in a a bit of air at the same time and for the same reasons as stated above.

With water tools, I don't think it's possible to just pump air with your mouth.

I'm not sure exactly what your asking? When i vape, i tend to let air in by breathing through my nose halfway through my hit. helps me take in, and hold in the vapor for longer.

Is this more like slurping a milkshake through a straw or drinking water through a straw? More of a draw technique question then lung or mouth pump? I didn't vote because I use both techniques but I believe the lungs are involved with both but the diaphragm and lungs act a bit different in each case.

I often use my mouth as a "bellow", in that I'm almost constantly drawing a little bit as I open the "Bellows" (mouth/tongue placement ), and exhaling through my nose. Really, it is kind of a combo of lung and mouth technique. Usually, a slower draw produces more vapor if fast airflow cools the heating chamber in your vaporizer. That is not a problem in pure convection-style vapes eg herbalizer.

I normally take a consistent hit and save the extra air inhaling for the end.

I like to give myself breathing room, I always try and make sure I can inhale air for a few seconds after I have pulled a good amount of vapor. I hate coughing.

EDIT:

That ecig issue just sounds like you're overexerting yourself just to obtain something that hasn't formed yet.

Coming from a spliffs background and having never liked water tools, I draw first with my mouth, like I did when I smoked cigs, and when enough vapor is accumulated, I stop drawing and inhale a lungful of fresh air, flushing all the vapor deep inside.

I believe it's a cultural thing as north americans use more glass tools than the rest of the world and you have to use your lungs to use them.

At the same time I believe drawing directly into your lungs explains many reports of people finding the vapor too harsh or uncomfortably hot and/or throat irritating and/or lungs irritating because it leaves strictly no time for it to cool down. Whereas when you do it in two steps, your mouth will cool the vapor first and moisturize it, then you draw fresh air to dilute it and it gets even cooler.

Using this technic, even near combustion temps (225°C) don't feel hot or irritating to me, and I use direct draw vapes exclusively.

Maybe you guys should give it a try and reconsider your habits? ;)

Tx for all the input fellow vapers.

Water are difficult to mouthpump on. I didnt have any success with my d020/solo combo. I could lungpump without to much harshness, but its less satisfying than a dry mouthpump solo hit.

My questionning is about the sources of the air pumping action. I prefer to hit my vapes like I would take a puff from a cigarette, or drink a thick shake is more accurate as I pump many times. This way my clouds irritate my throat less. Others, wich seems like the majority imho, pump the air with their lungs. More like hitting a bong. A continuous draw without the jaw moving.

One hypothesis I have is that mouthpumping reduces the exposition of my throat to the vapors, explaning the smoother hits.

Probably the lungs are involved in both draw tech. I will keep saying lung pumping, but it is the diaphragm doing the action as you stated. Tx for the precision.

For discussion sake, I can see all the air going into the lungs as a result of jaw (maybe tongue too?) action only. I pull air in my mouth by opening my jaw. Then the vapor goes into the lungs by closing my jaw, pushing the vapor in. Not by contracting my diaphragm.

Another hypothesis explaining my smoother mouthpumped hits floating in my brain. Its a long shot, but here it is. It helps not adding/removing pressure into the lungs, if that can be an irritation factor. I never tried a free flowing vape to eliminate/confirm this one. I only tried airflow restricted vapes.

I like this hypothesis! Its full of sense. I come from a joint background, no water tool or pipes. Slow direct intake from a pipe would kill my throat! This 2 step intake ressembles to @macbill method as well

Especially when using the Solo which requires some draw effort, I first heat-prime the load with light mouth pumps. Once the load gets heat stoked (which I can see by the vapor building), then I draw the big hits with my lungs. I tend to use this technique with all my vapes, regardless of draw effort characteristics or herb harshness - if an herb is particularly harsh at a certain temp, I just modulate my draw (lung or mouth pump) to lessen the throat irritation.

when I started smoking I automatically started inhaling from my lungs, only later I heard a lot of people collect it in their mouth first, especially with cigs(never been a tobaccosmoker, only joints). I've tried that a few times, but I just can't figure out how to hit it with my mouth, it seems impossible, whenever I want to produce any inwartd force I have to use my lungs(or I would have to swallow it into my stomach)

I use both techniques and it can be device dependent for me sometimes. The MFLB, for me, doesn't lend itself to mouth pumping because I can control the temp better by modulating a steady inhalation speed via my lungs.

With the Solo sometimes I will mouth pump a bit if the draw restriction is heavier than normal OR if I'm cloud chasing. I find I get bigger clouds mouth pumping the Solo a few times AND it hurts my lungs less. BUT....I've learned to be careful with mouth pumping the Solo if I don't want to get caught taking too big a rip. If I mouth pump early in the draw and then switch to using the lungs for the remainder of the draw... sometimes the bowl gets overly primed by the mouth pump and I get too much vapor in the remaining draw by the steady inhalation of the lungs.

Some of you might be saying 'too much vapor'? There's no such thing! For me there is such a thing .. If I expel a vapor cloud that could be confused with combustion its usually followed by a coughing fit.

Great thread with a lot of food for thought and experimentation. I think I do both at different times but now I am going to have to become a little more intentional about it and see which I now do and which way will work better for me.

Besides which you have wasted some significant portion of your hit, it seems to me.

I tend to use my lungs most of the time (always with glass), with the greatest exception being my FM5 which seems to work best with "mouth pumping".

I vape pretty exclusively out of a bong, so I like to really milk it. Get a good one or two hit extraction, milk it for all it's worth, then hold it as long as I am able. My lungs can't deal with combustion any more, but they can seriously handle vapor.

Interesting thread, never really thought about it. Not actively vaping at the moment either for tests, but I'm fairly sure:

- My old MFLB I definitely mouth pumped, I'd fill my mouth then basically inhale that, like a cigarette, but I'd be doing it at a much slower rate. I do a combination with the FireFly, sometimes straight lungs, but more often then not I find I go lungs to mouth pump during the FF. Using my UD as a direct draw, I also mouthpump for sure, I hit it like a cigar, I like pulling seeing that wispy vapor in the tube, stopping to see it fill up again, and then repeating. Definitely goes mouth to lungs with the UD, I'd say thats the one I mouth draw with the most.

I don't really think I lung draw on any of my vapes? Other than my e-cigs; with them i go directly from pushing button to inhaling deep in my lungs. Its the only thing I vape this way, so I'm assuming that would be a lung draw and yeah I don't really utilize it that often other than with the ecigs.

Water tools, I use em. I don't really know how to classify them, as I milk it and then inhale directly in my lungs, but the act of milking it is basically mouth pumping (Even with a continuous draw, you're filling the bong first, then lungs......I'm basically seeing the bong as the "mouth" in this, but I may be mistaken)

Mouth pumping starts at $25.

If you want it milked, that’s extra.

You want it white walled, that’s extra.

Its $85 if you want your carb ‘holed’ whilst being mouth pumped and its $60 just for a ‘carb-holing’ without pumping of any sort.

We have @Stu for that sort of weird shit.

You want stu to ‘clear your bong’?
That’s extra too.

not too much tho, secretly he likes it.
Sometimes if he likes you, he will swallow your bong water as well.

But he has to be pretty drunk for that.

If youre into lung pumping, then stus beard provides handy, pumping thrust handles to hang onto.
Alas, that’s extra as well.

If you want stu to dress up and dance around like this?

Yup you guessed it!
That’s extra!

Heres a tip, don’t pay for lung pumping if you only have a 3 inch male joint or less on your bong.

It’s a waste of $$$.
