Anyone try ABV Butter using a Mota Pot?

I stumbled upon one of these while researching canna-butter recipes:

It works a lot like an expresso maker, using both heat and pressure to infuse the butter - and it does it in about 10 minutes. It seems like it might work especially well with ABV.

Here is a video of the device in action:

...and another one...

There appears to be 2 sizes available - one that uses 1 stock (1/4 cup butter) and a larger one that uses 2 sticks. There also appears to be at least 2 makers/distributors of the product. One sells it as the "Mota Pot" and the other calls it the "Easy Butter Maker" - they appear to be identical units.

The Mota Pot at www.motapot.com also sells a variety of cannabis baking products

The Mota Pot ($49.99) is also on Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HFYIVOG

The Easy Butter Maker (http://shop.easybutterco.com/main.sc) is the same price, but also offers the larger unit for $69.95

I searched the FC forums and couldn't find any mentions.

For 50 bucks, this looks very interesting....

Almost there...
Wow, I think you are right!!!

Okay, looking at the curved handle and curved top piece, I think it's this:

Which is also on Amazon here:
http://www.amazon.com/Chefs-Secret-...ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1D0YYDWICQSSM

and it's only $14.54

I also looked to see if the filter insert was finer, and if you look closely at the videos, it's no finer than the one that comes with the expresso maker above...

LOL!!
I thought it was just a repurposed espresso maker!
Great find!
Now we need someone to try the cheaper version and see how the end result works!

So I'm talking to the wife about this expresso maker canni-butter thing, and she tells me that we actually own a stovetop expresso maker

It's not exactly like this unit, but it's the same exact capacity as the 1 stick version, and has an even finer filter. Okay, I didn't want to possibly waste a month's worth of ABV, so I did the stick of butter, 1/4 cup water, and some fine ground coffee. VOILA! 10 minutes later, I pour out the coffee-infused butter into a small glass container.

After it hardened up in the fridge, I poked a knife into the top layer and poured out the water on the bottom, leaving the hard top layer. I cleaned up any tiny bits of grounds on the outside, and I was left with coffee-infused-clarified butter. Simply fascinating result for about 30 minutes total work. I think I will use the coffee-butter to make some delicious choclates.

Okay...I got brave and just did the same thing using my ABV. I believe the weight to be around 10g. I crushed it up into an almost fine powder, and it fit perfectly into the expresso maker. 10 minutes later, I poured off the results (which looked and smelled MUCH better than I thought it would), and popped it into the fridge.

I am now awaiting the results....

Just took out the now infused ABV butter, drained off the water, lightly rinsed off any residue, and it looks and smells great!

@macbill - thanks for that link! I see that I used a Moka Pot and not a true Espresso maker, so my operating pressure was much lower than I might need (2 bars vs 9 barr - or about 30psi vs 130 psi).

Nonetheless, the end result in appearance and smell is quite similar to other canna-butters I've used, which kinda surprised me given I used ABV and the infusuion process took less than 10 minutes. (BTW, almost no smell during the cook - wife had no idea I did this until I told her).

Don't know how well the infusion actually worked, but the process seemed effective enough for me to try it again with a better espresso maker. The one for $15 looks pretty good...

Not sure if I should break this out into a new thread, but today I took my newly made ABV canna-butter and made chocolate :D

I called a good friend of mine and used his simple method of melting chocolate directly into the butter. Since the butter is already clarified (water removed), it's just melting and blending the 2 fats together. I used 2 small glass bowls, placed them into a small pot of warm water (kinda like a double boiler), then put the bowls into the fridge.

I used the ABV buttter I made yesterday from a single stick of butter and approx 8-10g of ABV and blended it with two bars of high cocoa butter chocolate, yielding 2 small bowls of ABV chocolate. After it hardens I'll probably quarter it into 4 doses for a total yield of 8 doses. Until I know the actual potency, I'm being very conservative. If I gotta eat more than one piece of this delicious chocolate, so be it :\

Not sure if anyone is interested, but I took pics of the simple process:

Slowly added the chocolate to the mix

It already looks good,,,heh

Can't wait to try this! I did one batch with 70% cocoa and the other with 82% to see which one I like best. I used hard dark chocolates since I was going to be added a bunch of butter. The end result should come out like a delicious milk chocolate that just melts in your mouth.

If that actually works, I've found a new life for my Bialetti !
@Solomon: do the butter "medicate " right ?

After all I'm glad the 220v MagicalButter Maker is out of stock since long.

I ended up cutting each bowl into 8 pieces, and without having any prior vaping today, I ate a piece.

Wow, it tasted great...super smooth with just a hint of canna flavor that just melts in your mouth. I ate it at 2pm and started feeling it about 30 minutes later. Definitely a more "body" effect, though I did feel a bit light headed too.

I usually need a small vape by 4pm for pain, but it's after 6pm now and I'm doing good. All headiness is mostly gone, and I can only now start feeling some pain creeping in. The dose I took was small, so noticeable 3-4 hour effect seems amazing. Next time I'll try 2 pieces and see if the effect is greater and longer lasting. I think my ABV chocolate will work well later in the evening too.

I think it was a successful experiment.

I didn't think there was anything at all left in ABV worth extracting, and I was pleasantly mistaken. This is like free medicine.

I also didn't think you could infuse whatever there might be left in ABV into butter using a cheap espresso maker in about 10 mins. Wrong again. In fact, I think it works well enough I might try it with some actual bud.

A final bonus - I have always avoided cooking with any kind of cannabis because of the smell, but there was so little odors during the whole process, that no one in my house knew what I was doing. Quite stealthy. :whoa:

Thank you for the report as this makes me seriously consider getting one an trying this !!

Actual bud ......
I assume you know about the need to decarboxylate the bud or it will have almost no effect. Post if you need info on that.

If you do try it, let us know how it goes.

Yes, I saw that mentioned on the Mota Pot site. Is this just baking it a bit prior to infusion?

Decarbing is a very important step or the butter will have little/no effect. Vaping or combusting goes beyond 250 F which converts the herb to a form useable by your body.
So, it needs to be done on herb (not on ABV). Cookie sheet in oven at 250 F for an hour and it is ready for edibles.

It's an obsession but it's pleasin'
Great find @Solomon! I've got a nice Bialetti moka pot that I haven't used in years. Mine is the same size as the Mota Pot (clever play off Mexican slang for cannabis).

I also have a Magical Butter machine that makes amazing oil and butter. However, one of the things I dislike about it is that I really need to use 2 ounces of material to 2 cups oil or butter for a nice strong oil. Using a small device like this for smaller batches is very appealing.

I hope to try a batch with ~⅛ oz of high grade flower this weekend!

Do you think that it would work with olive oil or coconut butter ?

Why not ? I'll give a try but not before my cannabutter is made.

Edit: It works! But for a smoothie, I'd recommend coconut instead of olive oil.

Fantastic info!

I would guess this is one reason why the "regular" way to make canna-butter is to cook the herbs in the butter for at least 30 mins before straining. I know my friends usually let it go between 2-4 hours in a double-boiler (and the whole neighborhood smells...lol)

@lazylightning - please be sure to let us know how it goes using this method with non-ABV herbs. It's quite compelling, and I'd love to know how it compares to conventional methods as well as the Magic Butter machine.

I also did some checking on the cooking pressure thing. Apparently all stove-top "espresso" makers only use about 2 bars of pressure. It's those large automatic machines that go higher (perhaps up to 9 bars). So really any stove-top espresso maker should work the same.

I had bought the Magical Butter Maker but was disappointed as to how much herb product I had to use. I just ordered this Mota Pot. I will be curious how this will work out? Im not much of a coffee drinker. I have never heard of this.

@CarolKing please post your results. I've been watching this thread and am curious. The traditional "stink up the house" method has an obvious drawback, but works. MB seemed like it was just too big for what was needed. If $50 solves the problem, I'll be thrilled.

I noticed online that you use between 3-5 grams of decarbed cannabis per stick of butter which is 1/2 cup. I'm suppose to receive this today. I have been saving high quality ABV for awhile so that will be what I use for my first try. It's golden and light brown in color.

Bought a cheap stove top coffee maker. 2 cup (175ml i think). Wanted it small as want to make reqular, started to worry would be too small but.
Put a qtr of a bar (60gs) of but plus a bit of water, not sure how much but not much. Used 6gs of abv
Put on min heat and waited. After about 7 mins started straming, waited a min more then poured out and let set. Drained off water and wow amazing butter with no straining at all. Minimal smell but not of cannabis.
