Induction dabber

I though I would show off a little toy I'm building as a surprise for a friend of mine. I'm kiinda proud of it. It's a cordless rechargeable induction heater. Let me know what you think. Thanks!
Looks awesome ! I hope to see this tech in a vaporizer soon :)

Salutations WizardG,

It's a cordless rechargeable induction heater.

Well there's been some false alarms before, i'm thinking of the Versa Infinity episode for example. Then came a video on the FlowerMate VaporMax V where we are told it's an induction unit while it is not, then not long after the Loto Labs Evoke arrived, euh... So it's kind of lets wait & see.

Anyway, maybe the time has come to choose a name for this new project!

:D

Let me know what you think.

Since you've decided to go portable i gather you've made preliminary calculations and decided its power consumption profile might be viable for this particular application. The IH technology itself ain't exactly new, it's already been demonstrated a while ago:

My suggestion is that you may want to share some basic background (applied to your project) as an intro. It's not convection but i figure it should prove to be a stimulating and rewarding read in the end.

Good day, have fun!

:peace:

P.S.:

Maybe you can focus on vaporist hardware and leave IH design to some 3rd-party supplier, as with this product previously mentioned beside others on FC before:

Additionally, if that's not enough power then i'm ready to bet that this tool from the automobile industry should prove suitable in most situations (considering if has removable coils):

"Anyway, maybe the time has come to choose a name for this new project!"

I'm calling it Maxwell's hammer. (look up James Clerk Maxwell. He's the guy who figured out the math for electromagnetism) ((yeah, I'm a geek:nod:))

I'm using an 18.5V 5500mAh LiPO pack for power. Depending on the size of the nail and the material it's made of I get ~60 to 150 dabs/charge.

And actually, my little toy can deliver more power than the particular model of mini-ductor you posted. Not for long between charges though!

I'm in the process of putting everything together into a handheld package now. It's a bit of a case of form following function. It's going to wind up looking a lot like the mini-ductos's cousin the bolt buster I think. I'll post pics and more video when it's all together.

...I get ~60 to 150 dabs/charge.

Ah yes, i keep forgetting it's not for dry flowers. That's information the reader will appreciate in any case!

...the particular model of mini-ductor you posted.

Well, all that counts is that we get the idea. There was at least one other brand/model when i searched and i'm wondering if the automobile insdustry wouldn't have a few more of those gems waiting to be discovered; though, with such a high price-tag attached it's certainly not what's most affordable around - maybe that's even a bit overkill.

I'm in the process of putting everything together into a handheld package now.

Oh, so i guess a lot of time passed since your video...

Any spreadsheet charts to share that won't compromise the project? Schematics solving some particular challenge, hand-drawings on a paper towel?...

32.gif

It's going to wind up looking a lot like the mini-ductos's cousin the bolt buster I think.

Which i'll illustrate below for our readers own eventual benefit:

Actually i think someone should have imagined some 3rd-party vaporist module to install in place of the coil long ago!... But at such high cost i figure it's not really appealing so this is one main reason why i'd favour a NoFlame and/or clone solution instead: it's simply more affordable! Yet, perhaps unsuitable for an IH dabber. Please explain how!!

26.gif

Though if a guy wants one in his garage anyway then that's quite another story, of course.

I'll post pics and more video when it's all together.

The reader will be awaiting in anticipation for sure...

Good day, have fun!

Salutations everybody,

WizardG focussed my attention on soldering irons which have Curie-effect tips, for example the Thermaltronics M7 series corresponds to 370 °C (~700 °F) while their M8 series offers a target temperature of 425 °C (~800 °F) instead. This is for 5 mm tips costing no more than 30 dollars US...

So i'll now invite the reader to take a good look at this particular video segment where an operator holds the smoking IH (solder iron) tip he was still using only a second before:

Such soldering iron elements don't get heated conventionally, their tips are based on a Curie alloy to provide thermostatic heat regulation at the point of contact... Now why can't this benefit our cannabic vaporist community?

By chance the present situation seems ready to change, so i hope the WizardG IH dabber project can be made just modular enough to allow the eventual addition of some dry cannabis adapter. Somewhat like those Curie-effect tips that can be replaced so conveniently.

Hmmm, I have a Metcal soldering station. I may need to sacrifice one of my older tips so I can harvest the curie alloy slug and try out the suggestion above. (solder never touches the slugs so It won't poison me with lead)

I'm going to try to finally get my toy fully assembled next weekend. More video soon 8-)

That could make some fun experiment, who knows it might even turn handy some day! But i still wonder why it remains to be evaluated in 2014 thinking IH soldering irons ain't really new at all, euh... Any theories explaining the apparent level of indifference around induction heat vaporizers during all those years?

How come??? Not to mention our favourite consumption method already adopted soldering iron technologies, far in its early past!...

I'm quite confident the readers started to endure premature signs of starvation by now so i hope you're going to be back with a cure potent enough to fix that mind-crippling state!

Salutations WizardG,

What? Do you actually mean you had doubts?...

:peace:

Not many, but it's always a tense moment the first time you apply power to something that can pull 100 amps when it's working right.

Actually, I added an automotive type 30 amp breaker to the circuit, just in case ;-) This limits output to ~500 watts but that's plenty for even the biggest nails. I abused the benchtop version of the circuit (in my first video) pretty thoroughly to make sure it was as bulletproof as I could make it. The design is tight. Even shoving a chunk of 5/8" bar stock in the coil couldn't kill it. Do that though, and this circuit sucks down over 100 amps and heats the bar cherry red in about a minute.

I'm thinking about getting together with one of my glass artist friends and having them make something special: Imagine a 'bowl' consisting of a glass tube 1.5-2" long with an inside bore of 3/4". 1/2" up from the bottom of the bowl is a dish of Ti or stainless, like a miniature upside-down bottle cap, held in place by dimples pressed into the glass.

Do you think that a titanium or other metal coil/foil can be wrapped around vaponic's bottom.. and heated with you gadget ?

Like this but instead of rubber - metal.

All right, lets say this reflects the level of confidence.

So if it had a weak link somewhere then not anymore!

Metal can be molten using IH, i wonder if you don't happen to be tempted to realize your own castings...

Oh, for a portable equivalent of nail dabbing - which i keep forgetting is a major parameter in this project.

Don't worry i'll do my best to imagine!

Well, I think a little paranoia is a healthy thing sometimes.

So if it had a weak link somewhere then not anymore!

The limiting factor now is runtime. I strongly suggest 2 minutes between dabs to allow the coil itself to cool.

My wife wants me to build her a line powered benchtop unit to melt silver for making jewelry.

Shake the tree until apples fall, apply torsion on a vegetal stem until its fibers emerge...

Probe to explore/verify even improbable scenarios, etc. On occasions some inexpected findings might occur which open new possibilities finally!

Is there a pointer to some close-view picture somehwere, to that same nail exacly?

Makes sense a lot. :D

Salutations everybody,

Since the present thread's tittle doesn't specify portable over table:

Apparently this is based on "Magnetic Induction Heating" while according to Alibaba it's « For Dry Herb And Wax »... Which all sounds brand new to me (and affordable too it seems), well at least i can tell i never heard of it before!!

Isn't there anyone here who's in a position to share some more information relatively to this new item?

The glass piece in that picture looks like it would give the user a mouthful of water with that tree perc upside down. Otherwise, I'm interested!
Edit here's a link to it on dhgate. The price is a bit high.

Thank you for the hint, somehow i was hopeful it would be a good idea to ask. :D

The price is a bit high.

It does dry flowers and concentrates, right? If it did ballons too that could beat my HA v2.1 which cost me ~315 $ CAD (taxes and money-order charges included) if memory doesn't fail me, which happened in 2011... So, if i were to shop around for a new electric vape again then i might certainly want to consider trading ballons for induction heat! Too bad the manufacturer prefered to build his own IH driver, IMO a 100 $ unit from Walmart would suffice to complement some 50 $ worth of metal/glass bits, etc. The Arizer Solo bent Glass Stem, for example, mine cost me ~7 $ each a couple summers ago... Roll a strip of Curie alloy around its glass bowl to form a tube, pile up 2 ~ 3 SiC "Ceramic Filter" discs in alternance with a twin metal shield/radiator then excite with a ready-made garage tool as the Mini-Ductor II, etc., and that shall become a real IH vaporizer - and a Bi-Energy one at that, to be exact.

Now lets suppose this wouldn't cost much more than 50 $ CAD to put together, so add the IH cooker plate and that's around 150 $ already while if one doubles his bet then in exchange he gets extra features, like a custom-designed IH generator to support enhanced funtions, glasswork to match, etc., etc!

Is this such a bad deal? If it does dry cannabis and i happen to have one in front of me some day then chances are i may not be able to resist the long wait after all. But that's me...

In my remote Cannadian town it would make sense to e-Commerce and forget all local purchasing as it can feel cruel sometimes to shop aroud here anyway (!), but i made only 1 exception to my habit of paying cash (only) for merchandise i can touch and it was for the HA in 2011, knowing i was scheduled to move to another city the month after...

Because on internet forums there are people talking to other people who love to hate in background, so i don't e-Commerce - but at least my personal information remains private. That's how i came to pay some ~210 $ CAD for an Arizer V-Tower which i finally gave away, so i'd say money isn't everything as there are external factors.

I feel the same. I would much rather jump in the car and go buy it. Turn it over in my hands, read the package, etc. But I am not in a MJ legal state so products available at retail are spotty at best. And what you do find is woefully overpriced, and slightly dated.

That is so true as a favourite reseller got busted earlier this year, though i believe it was because of seeds instead of paraphernalia...

M'yeah, e-Commerce makes us dream and then there's real commerce... I can't say for certain which can get worst.

I just purchased one of these!
It is being shipped tomorrow but i chose a different piece of glass, a recycler type.
Not going to say how much i paid for it but it was a LOT less than DHGate...

When it arrives i am going to take apart what i can to see how it works and what is in the air path.
After that it will be down to serious testing and after a week or two i will post up a review!

So far most parts are a Teflon type material, stainless steel and medical grade titanium.
Very interested to see how well it works, the cleaning it requires and just general maintenance!

It should arrive in time to test out some awesome shatters!!!

Salutations LazyLathe,

I just purchased one of these!

My goodness, how did you manage??!

I've been trying to decide what to think of that manufacturer's web site for a couple days now, since i noticed a striking similarity between the standard hot coil models and the IH ones: i think they all look nearly the same with similar connectors and there's one more detail: why should the coil assembly remain attached to its nail?... Which might be the case there and hence i'm still in fear this could be yet another exagerated claim (it has happened earlier this year)...

It is being shipped tomorrow...

Oh my, ho my! So it's ACTUALLY going to be cleared out MUCH sooner than i could have expected lately!

Hummm... Well i hope my suspicions will prove wrong. It really want us to have at least 1 IH vaporizer around before 2014 ends! Which will make you a pioneer on FC and even beyond! This may trigger envy in others i figure. Prepare yourself!!

Way to go with style, my fingers are definitely crossed LazyLathe! With my 2 Thumps up too!...

Well then i'll try not to push it, so as long as it's safe for all parties and we get the important facts that would be a great start on its own already. Yet, of course i'd be among those who can appreciate full views... Those are such fun times, have a treat when you're at it! Please play safe, we'd be so sorry should there be a mishap.

After that it will be down to serious testing and after a week or two i will post up a review!

Excellent, that's all good! The IH desert feels a less remote forgotten place suddently!

And a somewhat perfect timing at that!

Anything's possible, so i'd bet Santa will get busy this year. :D

Very interested to see how well it works...

Indeed! There's been plenty of theories, on my own plate in any case. It's gona be a pleasure reading about a real implementation as that shall be quite a change. Fantasies are nice though a real IH vape shall prove even nicer... I hope.

Thanks for passing by, no matter what's next. Good day, have fun!!
