Extreme Throat Irritation

Anyone else get extreme throat irritation? I think there is something wrong with my weed.. It fucking hurts.
Pretty much every sesh i have had, I always feel the vapour hitting the back of my throat, almost as if it is tickling it and irritating it and then my throat doesn't feel quite the same for a few days..
I will also mostly get pains and sensitivity at the very earliest part of my throat, just at about where my tounge ends. It makes it difficult to swallow food. I've tried water filtration, but I have not experimented much with lower vaporizing temperatures. I thought I could find the sweet spot where I can get medicated and still enjoy clouds but I may have to sacrifice that for much smaller, lower temp hits.

Has anyone else had to make this compromise?

I definitely don't think there is anything wrong with your herb, but more likely just the heat of the vapor. Heat can be very irritating. Your direction towards lower temp vaping will likely help, and also putting as much space between you and your vaporizer as possible so that it will have more time to cool. If you are still chasing the big clouds and lung busters, start looking towards glass with extra large chambers.

Did this just start happening with a new strain that you just got?

I've had irritation of a similar intensity from even lavendar.. any vapour seems to hurt me unfortunately.

My next sesh will be at much lower temps for the sake of my throat, and i'll see if it helps. I'm sure it will. I tried blocking the vapour path with my tongue a bit but it still hit the back of my throat and I've pulled up this morning with a minor rattle in my throat and a bit of a cough. Swallowing is also painful :(

How frustrating.

What temps have you been working with? At 300F the taste is good but light, starting at 370-390 you will get many particles in the vapor at once, cannabinoids, terpenes, etc. and thus dense vapor. You could try placing your tongue in the airpath, to stop particles from going to the back of your throat as a point of first contact

Hey @Deja Vu

There is a few things you could try. Have a glass of water when you vape. Take sips before and after. As other have said try lower temps and diff inhalation techniques. I know what you mean by vapor hitting you in the back of the throat.
My Solo and EVO can sometimes cause irritation if I am vaping a lot, taking huge hits, or there is something wrong with the vapeables (mold, powedery mildew, wet, etc).

I see you have a extreme q and a firefly. Do both cause irritation? I'd suggest eating a spoonful of local honey or drink some tea you enjoy after vaping. Stay hydrated. Good luck.

I'm no doctor by any means, but check if there is any mildew or mold. it migt have caused a throat infection.

I've been having a lot of tea lately to sooth it and it really does the trick, but I am yet to try drinking tea before, during and after the sesh. Using warm water in my water pipe helped a little bit, but only marginally.
As for the weed it seems normal. Not the best quality hydro but it'll have to do until an organic grower gets back to me.

I suck on cough drop while vaping, either flower or wax, otherwise it's cough galore. I also use bigger bong, it's a lot smoother and don't take big hits at a time.

I recently had a similar problem where after a sesh my throat felt so terrible it was almost hard to breathe and I would cough endlessly, to the point it kept me up at night. I also experience a weird tingling sensation that lasted throughout the day.

Lowering the temp didn't seem to alleviate the issue at all unless I did so using a bong. However, even with the bong the irritation continued but nowhere near the level as with the direct draw.

However, as my draw tube gets dirtier, the more plant debris I have noticed accumulating in the tube. So I have started to believe that the extreme irritation I had been feeling may have been due to hot plant material passing through the screen and settling in my throat. Does anyone think that is a possible contributor?

Yesss i forgot to say honey :D I love drinking a warm cup of mint tea with a slice of lemon and a good amount of honey. And really warm water when you use a WT. That really does the trick for me! :chill:

Have you tried vaporbonging through very warm (almost hot) water?
This is what I will try next.
and to all of the comments about drinking tea/mint; I had a sesh with a very hot tea made of lemons and oranges and it helped a little bit, but adding mint and other throat-soothers will be next!
hey deja vu , have you tried the vaping through cotton thing? there is a thread here about it.
i found it works the best and through water.
Haven't tried this yet. It doesn't reduce any of the actives?

If the herb is the only thing that's changed in your routine then that's likely the cause of the harshness. Are you still using the same herb after trying these things?

Occasionally I acquire bud that is really harsh, irritates my throat and what not. I suspect herb like this wasn't cured correctly.

Have you tried water curing? Its helped me when dealing with herb like this in the past.

it might but I think its worth it , and you could always vape the cotton. I like just a whispy bit of it in my solo stems and in my gongs for my water tools. I find that even bags from my eq can be pretty irritating on my throat, and that's even with some time for it to cool.
so I take the elbow screen out of the gong piece
( if that's what its called ) out of the cyclone bowl and put that into a water tool (bong) and pull it through that. it seems to help.
but for me the cotton is the best thing I tried ,I was almost considering going back to smoking, I tried it all the hot water and cold water all kinds of things but the cotton I notice the most help but even with that if I vape a lot it can still be bothersome... oh ya and I eat a lot of halls lol
good luck I hope you can figure out something that works for you.

edit;I also tried the water curing thing to, I had a couple medical grows. I flushed real good no pesticide or anything no detectable molds either it just seems that vaping can do this even if you have good clean well growen well flushed and cured flowers

I should also mention if you try it with the eq bags watch for back splash getting into it, I have one bong that this happens with.
I solve this problem by pulling the gong out while still inhaling and then just putting my thumb over the gong with the bag so no vapor leeks till the next hit.

I can confirm that after trying other herb today from a friend (home grown, cured properly, beautiful hybrid strain!) and experiencing a nice, smooth vape from it that it may infact be the shitty hydro poorly-cured bud that's irritating my throat, but I also tried a nice lemon/lime and mint tea with the vape sesh which did wonders for my throat. Will also do some research on water curing. Never heard of it before but I'll give it a try if I need to.

Dude :) ! I think i've discovered the cure for what you are suffering.. :D I solve my throat problems with HONEY (gotta be the real one ) and Baking powder it kills almost all kinds of bacteria and fungus.. Just sprinkle some powder on a teaspon of honey and suck it like a liliop slowly slawowing.. Do not drink any fluids or vape aftter that at least for na hour then u can enjoy some spearmint and camomile tea mix not too hot not too cold. :) Also 1 percent himalayan salt solution to gargle with and you can also drop it in your nose cause very often throat problems start from the nose :).
Oh if you got things on your throat you wanna get rid of , try the 1:1:1 honey:olive oil:lemon juice mix.. it works wonder and also reliefs pain.
Combine all these aids and you will be fine in no time and get relief instantly.
Honey and BK can be done 2-4 times a day.
The HOL mix you can take sip anytime its delicious and also cleanses liver ..
the Himalayan saline you must do mornings and before bed :).

I will try everything else you said, but I can't do the honey! Damn veganism.

I am finding also that if my throat hurts I need to wait 1 or 2 days before vaping again. Nice for a little tolerance break

Well any kind of honey like substance will do . Black mollases syrup... any other thick syrup .. Baking powder kills fungus ,alkalizes throat and sore means acidic ;) .. U can sprinkle it on a wet candy drop (mint candy will be fine). There is a pharma product called Tantum Verde .. but i imagine it is more horrid than honey for vegans cause they actually hate e-numbers more .. :)
I am not a true vegan.. but outside chocolate and honey,PROPOLIS and black ant extract .. i am all vegan :)..
I am no expert but isn't honey collected from flowers ? or they somehow process it trough their bodies ?

Not to get too off-topic, but it's made from the nectar that they collect and is for their children, queen and to build warmth for the winters. And that's good of you! Never heard of black ant extract however :suspicious:
I think some agave or coconut nectar would do the trick, i'll try it next sesh!
