I think that is more of an individual study, everyone's interpretation of a fast / slow pull will be different, different stages of battery remaining, ambient temperatures will be different, altitude etc.

Are you using the energizer 15 minute charger? How bright is the light? Can you test the batteries carefully in another device?, all your symptoms sound like a battery problem to me.

I purchased a set of extra AA cells from blissville and it looks like they are not Eneloops any idea what kind these are? They came in a powerx case. If I paid eight bucks for two non hybrids I will be disappointed. looks like they might be powerx IMEDIONS.

Wood is OK, but other materials could, theoretically, be much better, without changing the design or functionality. [Note, I am not putting down the MF or its current wood construction. It works great, but there is always room for improvement].

Why not make the device in 1 step using castable (pourable) ceramic, or use ruggedized silicone, or machine blocks of PTFE (Teflon) vs. wood? These materials present a smooth(er) surface and can be fully cleaned (e.g., soaked in alcohol) or even sterilized (put the whole vape in the oven, such as before giving it to a medical MJ, e.g., cancer, patient with potential immune deficiency). This is unlike wood, which can burn and give off vapor (smell) at temperatures way below comparable temperature limits for ceramics and Teflon (while silicone is not all that much different than wood, with both best not used over say 400?F). Wood is also organic and inherently porous -- a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi (particularly, if it gets damp or the box is used in "bare" configuration with no tubing and shared).

Maybe, MF will use such more vaporizer-appropriate materials in any desktop or other high(er)-end vaporizer it comes out with. I sure hope they are working on such models.

MF: Can you give us any clues about R&D and products in the pipeline? Once you get the new power supply out, what is next for MF (and vaporists) in terms of innovation, new products, etc.? Also, can you tell us how things are going, such as are meeting or beating your original sales targets -- selling enough LBs to keep you in the business and, hopefully, also bringing us more new products?

Relax, if they are Imedions those are better batteries and have a higher capacity.

Right now I have 6 batteries. I got 4 energizer rechargeables and those I used the 15 minute charger with. I then tried using the original batteries that came with the box when I ordered it from Vapeworld that I charge using the charger that was included. Both batteries gave the same results. And I think the light is the same brightness maybe I can take a picture later.

We have had some people indicate that they were having problems with that specific charger. We have since discontinued using that particular model. Please contact us privately if the charger continues to be a problem.

One way to check the charge is to see how bright the light is. If the light is not very bright, it might indicate either that the battery is not making a good connection or that the battery is not fully charged. Check to ensure that the battery hole is completely clear of any debris and that the battery is making firm and complete contact with the connecting rods. You might try pressing or twisting the battery while inserted while watching the light to see if that indicates anything. Please contact us via email if this continues to be an issue.

Also, the color of the screen is very unlikely to be the issue -- it is normal for the screen to be brown, or even dark after long regular usage. This should not affect the performance of the Box at all. However, do check the screen for tears or gaps. The screen is fragile. If it is torn, you will need to contact us privately for warranty support.

hey FC, so I have two dilemmas that I really need your advice on.

Prolem #1:
So my La Crosse smart charger came in the mail today, and it came with two La Crosse batteries (2600mah). I wanted to know if any of you have the charger, and if anyone's tried peeling the batteries. I dont wanna try and peel em, only to find out that you cant or something. Cuz if not I'll use em for somethin else. Also, they seem a tiny bit wider than the eneloops. Do they fit okay in the LB? I know at least a few people on here have the charger, and have probably tried using the La Crosse batteries in the LB.. the question is will they see this post, lol. thanks

Problem #2:
A couple weeks ago, I was vaping, and as usual I was using the acrylic stem on it. Never had problems with it before, but I guess I got too high and inhaled too slow. Now, the weed didnt burn, but it was really close. The mouthpiece, however, got really really super hot and smelled a little funky. I took it out, and on the end that was in the vaporizer, half of the circular rim on the end of the tube was white, and slightly deformed. I'm almost positive that the plastic started to burn, and that I inhaled plastic smoke (I am gonna be fucking PISSED if I get lung cancer in 10 years, lol). Anyways, I dont really like using it "natively" (without the stem) that much, cuz I dont want saliva stains to build up on the wood over time (I try my hardest to use it with dry lips, but I always manage to get a minuscule amount of spit on it, lol). I wish I could continue to use the stem, but every instinct in me tells me its not safe, and that the toxic chemicals from the burnt plastic smoke are coated on the inside of the stem. Just lookin for some opinions on that I guess.

"We did upgrade the batteries to the Imedion labeled cells from MAHA Energy. If anything, these have a slightly higher energy density than even the Sanyo batteries. Quality wise, its a close contest."

So thanks for the hook up a while back magic flight, I got my shit together, got a job and your box came just in time for christmas! Ended up riding like a 150-160 days. Anyways I didn't take any flicks of it in action but here is one right after a high altitude test, not exactly stormy weather though!

Hi,

It is possible to use the Box to try to separate out different components while in use. However, the Box itself was not really designed for that process -- actually the opposite is somewhat more the case. To get just one component at a time, a desktop unit would probably be a better choice, even though there are none on the market now that have anywhere near the accuracy that would be needed. To really do this right, you would need lab gear.

In regards to your other questions, I have included some information below which I think will be particularly helpful. I have been wanting to post the following information/graphs for some while now. I was finally able to get the legal release necessary since the following test results are usually considered to be for "internal use only" within our company.

Note: All tests below were performed with a freshly charged stock battery. The graphs were taken from our unit calibration test bench PC which is fitted with an infrared imaging system specific to our manufacturing process. The measured temperature is that which would be found at the exact contact surface of the very bottom of the screen trough, and thus represents the real operating conditions within the Box chamber while in use.

This first graph shows how quickly the Launch Box heats up and cools off. In this test, power is applied to a fully cold box for exactly 5 seconds under no draw conditions. You can see how quickly the unit rises to the required temperature. These measurements, typical to our units, is the physical basis of our claim "From cold to 385F in under 5 seconds!".

This second test is similar to the above, except that the battery was applied for 10 seconds. In this test (and also above) you can also how fast the unit cools off when the battery is removed. This characteristic is one of the reasons that the Box is so efficient when in actual usage. Vapor is truly only produced when the battery is applied. Within seconds of battery removal, vapor production halts completely, ensuring that none is being wasted when there is no drawing going on. Ours is the ONLY vaporizer in the world that can do this!

This third test, with 15 seconds of power, demonstrates the thermal stability of the Unit. The key thing to notice in the three graphs above is the demonstration of our key design integration of physics of the StefanBoltzmann law. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stefan–Boltzmann_law for more information). The specific physical characteristics of the materials chosen in the design, the exact physical shape within the bowl area, and the IR relations of the component parts, all contribute to a 'self titration' effect when the unit approaches the optimum working temperature.

These three graphs together demonstrate the fact that despite the extremely rapid rise time in the temperature of the unit, there is not also created the conditions of thermal runaway. The naive approach of simply applying "more power" just will not work -- a much more delicate balance is required (hence our utility patents in this area). Instead simply increasing temperature indefinitely, the physics of the unit stabilizes the temperature, therefore enabling the user to easily access the optimum vapor production. This allows ordinary people to use the Box with a minimum of, training, effort, or skill. Without the temperature stabilization effect, it would be nearly impossible for anyone but people with the most advanced and split second accurate breath control to get the draw rate correct.

This is part of the "Magic" of Magic-Flight. Although the Box may look like a simple block of wood, there is a actually a rather high level of physical sophistication inherent the design, most of which is not at all apparent to the casual viewer.

This next test demonstrates the effect on temperature of a "normal" draw -- ie that which is obtained from a person who is encountering the Box for the very first time and which has not otherwise been trained or instructed. People usually draw too fast when they are using the Box for the very first time, thus resulting in a cool off below the range generally useful for vaporization. As such, we encourage people to try drawing "very slow", and "slower than you might expect" when using the Box for the very first time. These directions, and better, an in-person demonstration of the correct draw rate goes a long way to improving the chances that someone will get effects when first "testing" the Box. Without this guidance (ie for those people who insist on trying the Box without reading the directions), there is a much greater chance that they will not feel the Box as "effective".

This graph shows the effect of a correct, steady calibrated draw rate. Using a vacuum system with a rate of flow control valve, etc, we test the unit by applying energy for 5 seconds, simulate a draw for 10 seconds, and then no_draw for 5 seconds more before removing the battery. This test simulates the normal usage conditions of a person who hit the Box with a little bit more experience than the novice user above. As you can see from the graph, a steady draw rate can easily set the temperature to a specific range. This feature allows users to "tune" their experience with the Box by trying various draw rates.

This next graph shows the full range of variability that the draw rate can have on the temperature of the Box. This test demonstrates the effect on temperature that a full hard draw can have. Since the draw rate can effectively vary from zero (which would look like the no-draw graphs above), to the maximum airflow that a normal person can pull through a Box, this graph shows the range of accessible temperatures. As you can see, pulling air through the Box too fast, as some Bong users are prone to do, can make the vaporization process stop completely. When people say the Box "does not work for them" or that the "effect is different" than they want, it is usually due to some factor like this one.

This final graph shows the result of one of the more sophisticated "optimal" hitting techniques. The procedure of "micro-hitting" is to take multiple short very light pulls of air every second or so. This allows the temperature within the Box to fully cross all points within the optimum range, ensuring a release of *all* of the different types of active ingredients in a set of proportions similar to their actual rates and proportions of occurrence within the load. Insofar as different volatile components are released at different temperatures, the unique capability of the Box to nearly instantaneously adjust its level of heat provides a release of these components in their natural proportions.

Vaporizers which are set to only one temperature at a time cannot help but volatilize the lighter components first and quickly, while leaving behind other, higher temperature components. Such units cannot help but produce too much of the lighter parts and not enough of the richer ones in relative proportion to one another. Unlike these other vaporizers which can only change their temperature slowly, or only via purely mechanical means, the full spectrum of effects is available with the Box in their natural proportions. Again, the Box is the ONLY vaporizer on the market that can come anywhere near to being able to do this.

EDIT ADDED LATER: In regards to the graphs, read the graphs from right to left! The red dot on the left is the "current" temperature and the entire trace moves towards the right. The X axis is the measurement at a certain "time ago" -- exactly backwards what most people might expect. Also, the time on the graph should be read as relative -- the image capture was not synchronized with the calibration clock.

The way to look at the graphs is to take the time of power being applied as being where the curve makes a sharp increase on the rightmost side of the graph, and then to consider the "progress" of what happens as you move towards the left from there.

Received my launch box today. One of my batteries got fried by my charger (the one with the small blue LED screen) but other than that I'm very pleased with it's performance. also didn't receive a peg stem but oh well. Probably going to upgrade to powerex 2700s soon.

They are IMEDIONS -- they are LSD batteries, and they test out as having slightly better performance and energy density than even the Eneloop batteries (about 12% more). Quite simply, those are the very best batteries it is possible to get for use with the Box.

A company -- a business -- is more than simply a collection of its products and its people. To truly be "successful" in a more meaningful and lasting sense, rather than considering just the functionality of things, it is also necessary to consider the values embodied in them. We use wood not only because it is nearly a perfect fit for the required functionality, but also because it is an expression of our collective values.

If considered *only* from a functional perspective Teflon or Silicone could almost work (glass and ceramic are definitely out because of improper thermal characteristics and because they are to heavy). However, both of these products are seriously synthetic and have non-biodegradable lifespans on the order of one hundred thousand years or more. Having a lifetime warranty is one thing; creating yet more trash in the world 300 years from now is another. Wood is truly the best material to use, both from a functional perspective and also from a values and meaning one as well.

Keep in mind also that the need to "perfectly clean" the unit is purely a psychological one and/or a legal one -- it is not (and never has been) a functional issue. People want to remove all trace of what was put into the Box as a reaction to an improperly designed set of prohibition laws. These laws are themselves reactionary, disabling, and needing to get fixed. If we are going to "improve" or "fix" something, lets concentrate our efforts on what is going really solve the problem and be effective -- repeal the ridiculous plant prohibition laws!

This is simply not true. Wood has natural resistive aspects that actively prevent the breeding of bacteria, fungi, and mold. Keep in mind that the growing tree in nature has a strong incentive to evolve in a direction that will preserve and protect its wood from invasions of these exact types. Each of the various types of wood have various oils and aromatics within the wood itself that work to protect the wood. We do not need to add these -- they are already there and are much better functionally than anything we could invent. Wood has to be exposed to wind, rain, and sunlight a fairly long time for bio-degrade to be possible in nature -- years, typically. When we add our own sealants to the wood, it slows this process by a factor of 10x or 20X. Therefore, given the average of the exposure environments and this slowing, the wood in the Box should be able to last a hundred years or more -- plenty long enough.

If you have any doubt of these facts, consider that there have been safety studies conducted on the relative merits of wood cutting boards in the kitchen vs Teflon ones. Although some vendors would prefer that you not know this, it is actually the case that Teflon cutting boards are far worse breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi than wood ones. Both types of cutting boards have tiny grooves in them (due to the action of the knife while in normal use) -- grooves which can provide a home for bacteria and fungi. However, while the Teflon boards are inert, and thus do nothing to inhibit the growth of these cells, the natural oils in the wood make it much less likely that such cells can multiply and survive. These studies have shown that for most folk in most situations, wooden cutting boards are far safer. Only in industrial kitchens that regularly clean with chemical sterilization techniques can the disadvantage of Teflon be (temporarily) offset.

I can say that we have been very much on track with respect to sales -- neither significantly more nor less than outlined in our 'plan'. While our estimate of the measure of the "social permittivity" factor was too low, our original estimate of the reaction factor was also too low, and these have in the longer term tended to cancel one another out. Thus we have had slower sales than expected in the start and more sales later on, thus arriving more or less at the expected plan milestone at this time.

We are hoping to be able to release at least one or two additional items once the holiday season nears. Unfortunately, that is all I can say about it at this time.

Hi, I recently purchased a Launch Box and I love it, it works great, but when I went to go charge my batteries, the LCD screen turns on for a second then turns off, and no red light turns on indicating that the batteries should be charging like the directions said, I'm kind of concerned, what would be my best bet for batteries and a charger if these don't work?

I agree thanks for posting the info MF.

HV-Try contacting MF and see if they'll send you another stem since your stem melted? Or you could buy one or get the whip that blisssville sells? Or just use the MFLB without the tube?

I have been using the MFLB in an interesting way recently and I felt like I should share it. I pack a trench, take some tokes maybe 10ish till I start feeling good, then stop. Next I take out my bubbler(could use any other smoking piece) and pack the trench into that, then hit it till it's cashed.

I find this extends the amount of herb consumed but you get an interesting mix of smoke vs. vape high. They seems to combine and mix into something that is neither, but a little of both.

I realize the site name is fuck combustion, but do people smoke at least some of the time?

Since I usually have very limited amounts of herb, I smoke my ABV in a bong to get the most out of it. I vape until I feel I'm not getting any more worthwhile hits from the LB, then I keep the ABV.
I don't smoke it right after vaping, but from time to time when I don't mind the smoke.

I had this exact same problem with mine. I already had a fifteen minute charger so I just switched to that and threw away the broken one.

Regarding MagicFlight - Incredible product - I can't really put into words how nice it is to know my search is over for the device I require. I have (like many here) a graveyard of butane-based or electrical devices - but none that I have used compare overall.
