butane exhausted through vacuum pump

Not sure of this is a stupid question. When vacuum purging butane out of bho, is it possible to run a hose from the exhaust of the vacuum pump to the safe outside. With always flushing the exhaust line with the pump before opening the champer located just inside by a window. Im not looking for a recommendation just curious if possible in situations of 5 to 10 gram runs less than once a month.

You should never run butane indoors. Unless you happen to own a professional paint booth with a negative ion system.

I completely understand that. Im only talking in terms of only after blowing and doning a couple hot water baths outside. At this point looks like a shatter but I put in on a hot plate and vac chamber. At that pointis it possible to take inside and pump all the butane released during the purge in the chamber and simply attach a hose to the dealership exhaust of the pump. Than run the pump in a mannor to get all the gasses including all the butane from the chamber out that hose. More wondering un theory. Even if it would work I understand it wouldn't be the safest. It would make one more the the purger could fuck up. And rather dangerous mustake at that. But im talking final purge on only 2 can run.

I am who I am and your approval isn't needed!
If your concern is just the remnants of trapped butane in an already water bath purged oil remains... your concerns are invalid. the amount left in the oil at this point are not enough to worry about, and what escapes into the air is very much less than if you were to refill a standard butane lighter indoors when you reach the full mark and it 'sprays back'.

That was my concern, and I have been concerned about the spilage of refilling my torch. I just know of a person who blew up there house and he said that he only finished purging in his bacement. He said he thought that caused it. However he made a ton. But for the situation I explained its safe? Also the spilage of the torch indoors is safe, even over long periods of time?

I would not be worried about the butane indoors when doing the vac purge, HOWEVER I observed that while my pump is running there is pump-oil vapor being vented along with purged gasses. ( I don't want that residue to get everywhere). These are venting through the oil fill cap (where vent hole is located). Would have to find something with the same threads to be able to exhaust it remotely.

Butane is twice as heavy as air so being mindful of where spillage occurs is a good idea. For example, filling a bunch of lighters over a sink, the escaped butane will fill up in the trap of the plumbing and in the sink, test a lighter and the potential for a nice fireball is there.

But over a long period of time will it fill my poured cement basement, waiting for the day to be lit?

Ive noticed the pump oil vapor, Ive never thought about what damage it could do to my spare room with freshly painted walls and new carpet.

Some of that vapor you guys see from the pump could just be water vapor in the chamber as moisture in the air boils off under deep vacuum. A tube could theoretically be ran to window or something if it was a short run. I don't know what style of pumps you guys have but mine vents through a hole in the handle and is probably about 5/8 ID a one inch tube or so could slip over the OD of the hole.

@DieHard this is my current model of pump it vents out where that red plug is. I have used like 10 vac pumps and they were all like this as far as I can recall. Is this not the case with yours?

Thats mine but the orange exsaust cap on the top broke and i bought a black one that looks like a nossel to fill water balloons.
you can buy a filter to hook up to that cap I bet... is it threaded?

search vacuum pump oil filter and you will be able to take care of any oil spray.

I just wrap brown paper (like paper bags) around the orange cap for absorption of vacuum oil.

the red plug is an intake port... you can actually install a valve there a throttle vacuum from it instead of the chamber... it will also help dry out the crank case, but will decrease overall vacuum capacity.

best bet imo would be to set up a vacuum resivour from some pvc or imo a propane tank.

then you can just fill it with vacuum outside or whereever and hook it up to the chamber.

when its full or rather emptied of vacuum just take it out and refill its vacuum. this will pull any residual butane out through the pump and your good to go.

and since an empty propane tank is already set up to hold butane... well your good to go and on your way to understanding closed loops that much more...

so that you or a buddy doesnt blow up their house...

Just blew my mind. Ive never looked into how closed loop systems work but they had me really interested when I seen one in Colorado. Could I build my own?

you can. but there will be parts that end up needing a machine shop tools to complete so some parts are actually just easier prebuilt. I saw this one system that has a viewing window so you can actually watch the column process.

Im actually having trouble with my system. Im totally new at it. Do you think 29.0 is a strong enough vacuum? I use a cheap hot plate with an oven pan and water in it. I noticed the heat can be a little uneven. But I also use a cheap ir thermometer so maybe thats a problem. Sometimes my bho wont get molten till like 130. In all my bho ive noticed a nasty burnt flavor so I turned them to canna caps. Unfortunately im working with mostly leaves. But last batch was pretty coated in trichs. Glass extraction tube, non-bleached coffee, fillters Pyrex pan, whip it from north sea. Past run included white powder mold so I winterized with everclear and .2 micron syringe. But currently purging crystal coated leafs not winterized. I tried this batch cause I thought it was done but tasted that same nasty burnt flavor. I reheated, whiped, and vaced. Than it bubbled a lot again. I had thought it was done bubbling. Some advice please.

JB pumps run anywhere from $350-$900 depending on the model and what not. For purging oil you don't need a 10cfm 2 stage pump capable of 15 microns or anything crazy like that.

The red plug is most definitely for the exhaust port but your correct the exhaust can be throttled if you wish to slow the pump down (Actually mine has 3/8 NPT on the end but it also has a built in ball valve on the exhaust) but I prefer to do that on the intake of the pump where your hoses hook up or via the gas ballast port on the oil reservoir.

However I would say you need to make sure you have a fairly accurate way if getting temps. I also would keep whipping to minimum go for a thin film purge and try flipping it. This helps keep from trapping solvent and moisture in your oil.

it is actually referenced as an oil fill port... which was not what I thought... I digress. the orange cap on these is where the filter goes and man is it ever necessary if you dont wanna mess.

the red plug like on this one was also noted to be called "gas ballast valve" as I dedcribed above.

@Puffers vacuum brand seems totally diffrent since the handle on the best value vacs are just bolted on and are made of solid rod metal...

so our pumps operate quite diffrent it seems... @Puffers does yours spit and drool at the handle?

Oh ok ya we were talking about different pumps :lol:

Mine only spits out oil if it was overfilled or started against a system that's pressurized above atmosphere without throttling (which isn't a concern for our uses). As far as I am aware most vacuum pumps are designed fairly similar mine uses a rotary valve that slides in the cartridge assembly to move air from the intake to exhaust port. Some definitely like to spit oil more then others though. The intake and exhaust design must make quite the difference...

after some thought I can totally see how having the exhaust go through the handle would pretty much eliminate spitting from sheer gravity. the oil will just run back down inside the tube of the handle.

Sence i bought that black cap i have had absolutly no spillage. I dont know why they make these pumps without them

Ive heard not to whip but when it stops reacting and bubbling under heat and vacuum but still has butane what do I do to get it fully purged?

Yea I wanted to make sure It was the right one. First few pages didnt talk much about purging but I got like 7 more to read. Thanks. Again I apologize for being a total noob

Whipping is generally thought to only introduce more oxygen which, in turn speeds up degradation of the actives.

Ive tried keeping temps low for that reason. I just seem to not be able to get this bad taste (that im assuming to be butane) still so ive gradually rise the temp. Is it bad that I stop the hotplate for periods of time (work ect) and come back too it. Because I think I have all together put in like 5 whole 24 hour days into this purge with temps up to 130 and vaced at 29.0
