Ok you fuckers. This is the very first time that one of my threads has been shut down and I'm not happy about it. :goon:

I created that thread for one purpose and one purpose only, and that was so that we could have a place to one, report some news that others may not be aware of, and two, to have a place where we can discuss and offer up personal observations of said news. It was NOT a place to either flame others for their opinions, nor was it a place to post inflammatory posts, be it pics, vids or linked articles that are designed to do one thing and one thing only, and that is to push the emotional buttons of others who don't share your perspectives.

It's all about empathy and the ability to see the world viewed from someone else's eyes. If you don't have the ability to do this, than stay the fuck out of this thread. And my suggestion to the mods here that if they see anyone do what was exhibited in the previous "news thread", ban their ass immediately and for my part, my finger is going to be twitching on the "report button".

So.........without further adieu................I present to you your News Thread...........2.0.

And I strongly suggest that we leave the previous discussions that started this whole fiasco out of here, at least until things cool down a bit.

Edit: To the mods: I sincerely hope that this doesn't make your job more difficult than it already is. I'm also hoping that the members here are mature and insightful enough to understand what I posted above.

Haris Suleman and his father, Babar, were trying to fly around the world in 30 days.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • NEW: Coach says young pilot was a soccer player who had a knack for when to tell joke
  • Haris Suleman, 17, was at the controls during his trip around the world
  • His father, Babar Suleman, was traveling with him and is missing
  • Daughter says her brother and dad had trained for a water landing
(CNN) -- An American teenager who was trying to set a world record for flying around the world was killed and his father is missing after their plane crashed into the ocean off American Samoa on Tuesday night, the boy's family said.

Haris Suleman, 17, was trying to make the trip in 30 days and was due home in Indiana on Saturday, his sister Hiba Suleman said. The teen's body was recovered.

Still missing was his father, Babar Suleman, who was traveling with Haris and who is also a pilot.

"We're hoping my dad is alive and well, and we're going to keep praying until we have a definitive answer," Hiba Suleman said.

She told reporters the plane was about 23 miles from the island when it crashed. Her father wouldn't have let Haris take off if the weather was bad, she said.

It is unclear why the plane crashed or why the duo took off at night.

"He was doing something that he loved. He was doing something adventurous," she said of her brother, who received his pilot's license in June. And he was doing it to raise money for charity, she added.

Wow that sucks for the family. Hindsight not withstanding though, I'm thinking that letting an underage teen fly around the world in a tiny airplane was a bad idea.

He had just gotten his pilots license in June it says. there's more to the article. I didn't want it to be too long.

I love small aircraft, but they absolutely scare the shit out of me.
This 30 day challenge does seem like a much more suitable task for a more seasoned (1,000-10,000 hour) pilot

It is admirable for those 2 to die doing what they love:clap:. Nobody ever says they want to go out being an innocent bystander.

It's been a pretty bad streak for aviation lately. According to a Weather Channel article there were 40mph wind gust conditions. If true, flying a single engine Beech through those conditions is not a good judgement to make.

Air Alergie passenger plane crashes. All 111 passengers feared dead. This is now the 4th major aviation incident in as many months. WTF is going on?

40mph winds is a pretty big PIA.
That is enough to keep me on the ground, even in an L-39.
The plane is fully capable, but it more challenging and a real rough ride.

(Not me, I did not want to show any tail numbers;))

What if climate change were having an effect on the wind speeds and that is the reason for some downed planes?

Not to be a fear mongerer, but will flying become a dangerous thing due to climate change? I remember reading that because the oceans would be heating up there would be more moisture in the air creating for hotter airs and thus a more volatile weather system.

Methinks this may be a sign of this.

Well, we know at least one plane was shot down. Yes, weather could be a factor in these cases but weather radar is pretty sophisticated these days and airlines/airports are pretty good about avoiding weather. I've been stuck at DFW airport numerous times because of rain, lightening, and winds.

Edit: Also, some countries don't have as strict regulations when it comes to maintenance and such. The picture is from a China Airlines engine. Apparently the plane flew with the engine in this condition. It would never happen in the US. The seat belts were there to keep the fan from 'windmilling'.
