Vaccum purge?

So I have just been reading about people vac purging their bho for 100 hours? Can I really run my little vaccum pump for that long? Also right now I just have a little hot plate from Walmart. What is the best one to keep your heat consistent?

I don't think people actually run the pump for xxx hours. When I vacuum purge I only need to run the pump for ~30 seconds to pull down to purging pressures. After that, I isolate the pump from the chamber (I use an inline valve) and shut it off.

The chamber is pretty airtight so it can hold the pressure for several hours without a significant drop. I "burp" the chamber every 30 minutes or so; basically just turn the pump on and open the valve so you clean out the atmosphere in the chamber.

A water bath is probably best for consistency. I'd test this prior to a run though- some hot plates can have really inconsistent temperature controls. Also you'll need some type of thermometer; e.g. an IR gun or a digital probe.

I tried turning my pump off on my first run but keeping it attached to the chamber and the oil from the pump traveled up the tube and dripped onto my bho and ruined it. Am I doing something wrong?

You need a valve between your vacuum hose and your chamber. Ideally two valves so you have a fresh air intake. Here's my setup:

The vacuum hose attaches to the brass-threaded valve. Not pictured is another, similar valve attached inline to the hose with a T adapter (that's the fresh air intake).

I do have a valve to bleed the air?

This is my set up.

you need a valve on both sides of the t on your chamber. one isolates from the pump preventing pullback of pump oil the other is for venting in fresh atmosphere and should have a filter on it to prevent particles from getting in.

there are some that in early stags of vacuum purging will actually crack that atmosphere valve pinch to maintain a certain bar while also continuiosly removing to tainted air from the chamber. for these instances you will need to build a vacuum reservoir that can be charged with vacuum. I posted one in the extraction artists thread on concentrates even.

farscaper,
Ok i think i'm understanding you. But how would I get that extra valve on my current set up? And I just am not getting how when I shut it off the oil travels up the tube? How would the incorporation of this extra valve stop that? Is it because i'm adding new air? Should I be opening the bleeder valve every once and awhile while I'm vacing? I knew I should be running the vac itself for that long just never new how to stop the oil going up the tube.

multi stage answer... sorry if I get confusing.

the valve between the pump and chamber prevents the vacuum that you have created inside the chamber from pulling the oil into it... think of it like a straw with two people sucking. when one person quits the other gets a relief of pressure and begins to recieve air from the other end.
so when you turn you vacuum off but do not isolate the chamber from it. the vacuum pressure begins to suck backwards up the straw.
if you were to kink said straw in half... when one person let off there would be no rush of reverse pressure to cause (in this case pump oil) to flow back up.

I acually just ordered mine. the valve asymbly looks like this.

outside of that its all technique. diffrent artists vacuum diffrent ways it seems...

hope this helps.

Looks like you already have your 2 valves rigged up on your lid. In the pic it looks like the valve going to the pump is open the while your fresh air valve is shut.

To avoid sucking oil up into your bho turn off the valve that the vacuum hose is hooked up to while the pump is still on (which as @farscaper said isolates the pump feom the vac chamber) then you're good to turn your pump off.

I couldnt tell by the pick if there were 2 on it. he noted a fresh air valve but I took it that there was only the 1 valve. if there are two then one is fresh air and one is for pump isolation.

right BEFORE you turn the pump off shut the isolation valve with the fresh air valve already closed. this will preserve your vacuum in chamber and then the pump can be shut off without oil being pulled by vacuum, back into your chamber.

there that makes more sense.

and vise versa when turning on the pump to "burp" your chamber: 1st close the fresh air valve (if open), turn on the pump, then open the isolation valve.

how many runs have you done?
what has been your biggest headache?

remember that fresh nugs will produce a concrete and well cured nug will produce oleoresin.

im trying to prep myself for when it gets here... I will be doing a ton of tiny 4 or 8g runs to get my tek down.

Well I have done a shit ton of runs just not many with the vac chamber. Before I had the vac chamber I would just blow onto my sil pad and then use the hotplate to purge right out in the open. But, only two runs so far with the vac chamber. I haven't been making it lately because I have been finding it for $50 a gram so a better deal than I can make it anyways.

So I decided to invest and start making my own bho. I just bought some equipment.

2 Gallon Vacuum Chamber with 3CFM Two Stage Pump

14-21g extraction tube
3 50 micron n 3 75 micron screens (what's the recommended size for the screen/filter)

Pyrex dishes

Power 5x butane

Skillet

Temp gun

Concentrate pad for the vac

Big outdoor area!!!!!

Do u guys have any suggestions on other equipment or technique for vac purging and making some bomb shatter? I'm all ears
