Sports threads are never that popular here on FC, however this is the World's Game and the biggest tournament of any futballers dream! So who are you rooting for?

While Group G is being touted as the "Group of Death" by some, I think Group D is tougher. England, Italy and Uruguay are all pretty damn good and one of them isn't going to make it through. If the US can get lucky with a tie or win against Portugal, then we have a decent shot to get through IMO.

I can't wait for the games to begin.

Least stacked I say group F, Argentina should Top that group easily but C, D,G all look up for grabs.

Actually I think group H will produce some hard fought games at least all four teams can surprise ya.

I would like to see an Ivory Coast vs USA final.

Let's just hope that Brazil gets their shit together in time.

This is the Stadium in Natal last week. Photo tweeted by FIFA head honcho.

It says "We just visited the Arena das Dunas. We have a race against the clock, there's lots to do still for the fans and media".

They can't even put a full house in the main new stadium in São Paulo either to "test" it properly during the game this Sunday in final preparations before the opening ceremony.

It's hard to get into this World Cup when your country is the red hot favourite to come last. But then again we are there! This is Australia's third consecutive appearance in the World Cup finals which is quite a big deal to us. Unfortunately every 4 years our team gets much, much worse. We made it through the group stages in 2006 and were unlucky to lose to the eventual champions Italy. I sense no such Cinderella story this time round unfortunately :(

Maybe we are sleeping on that Bosnia-Herzegovina squad, they are ranked 14th and just knocked off Mexico and Ivory Coast. Still unproven in World Cup play though, so we will see. One thing for sure is I can't justify buying the video game, like I usually do every four years and play for a month. When I can get a recycler, or three, that I can use daily from the cheapie thread...

Mr. Gweilo at least they're playing World Cup football again. You know you could be watchin' on opening day with no horse in the race and that ain't much fun, now is it ?

Belgium vs Australia final ? Who Knows? Could be fun.

Time for Some New Blood on the top of the heap. Why Not ?

Rudeboy I love your enthusiasm and agree with you. Honestly though our squad is probably the weakest we have had in 15-20 years. Our stars have retired and nobody much has replaced them. I love an underdog though. I would like to see Japan or the USA do well. Traditional footballing countries are often very disrespectful to less traditional footballing countries. I would like to see them taught a lesson. You are right though, at least I have a team to cheer.

I would say:

Group B, because Spain are the current World Cup & Euro Cup holders, which means Spain currently hold the title belt both as best team in the World and in Europe at national level over 2 separate recent tournaments .....doesn't really get any better!......& the ubiquitous Holland are also in that group.

Group A, Simply because it's Brazil's group, who are hosting which means they will be heavily motivated to win this particular World Cup more than any other .....& Croatia can beat anyone on their game, very robust.

Group D ....:lol::shit:

Team NO SLEEP!
I think the politics of the event have finally gotten to me and no longer feel good about getting excited for the Cup. I feel deflated.

It is the same way with the Olympics, the host country's poorest population gets shit on, Fifa collects fortunes greater than small countries, and no funds go towards humanitarian efforts.... I could go on and on, but it has all been said before.

I love Brazil, but the last thing I want to see all over their country is a bunch of white elephants (stadiums too costly for the country to maintain) dotting the beautiful landscape and falling into immediate disrepair.

...meanwhile the poorest of the poor, and the majority of the population is stuck in the flavela and will see no benefit from this event.

Can't disagree with any of that FL, but I would say it's less than straight forward.

Not many things Brazil can claim to be best in the world at, football is arguably one of those things.

Would it be better overall for the Brazilian poor not to host the World Cup? ...I think it's a close run thing but overall positive. At the very least they are getting to promote their political/economic concerns in the mainstream international media, if not hosting the WC would we be seeing their protests on the news or discussing them now in this thread?

While I'm no fan of over paid footballers, I like the idea that some of best Brazilian players past & present learned their trade in the slums of Rio playing barefoot in the street.

The odd thing here where I am you hardly ever get to watch USA pro soccer/football unless I pay a inordinate amount of money to the cable company. I in no way feel the USA is "my team" because I never fucking get to see anyone on the team play unless they are playing on a European or South American team.

I can watch at least 2 Dutch matches a week but nothing 'Live from the Ol' USA' unless I watch it on a pay for view service. WTF.

I think the UEFA champions league is more exciting than the World Cup :/ I think I've spent more on boots than I have vaporizers.. $400 for a pair of nikes was a bit much now that I look back at it..

Really looking forward to watching Spain..

Ronaldo should have gotten a yellow at the very least, for harassing the ref at the 75th minute. No Pepe against USA now! Although Portugal will be very, very hungry for a win. Then maybe our coach can kiss his home country' ass enough they will slip up in game 3. Alas, the Black Stars are on the pitch first. 2:30 the countdown is on!
