reclaiming with everclear

for those who reclaim with ec/ethanol, do you heat up your ec at all? or does the claim come off fairly easily sans heating the ec? a few posts ive come across on the internet have mentioned using "warm" or "hot" ec, but never stating how to go about it. i can understand that since a warm liquid def gets the claim off quicker, yet ec is super flammable which makes me uber hesitant. just looking for some feedback is all.

You can heat it, I would recommend doing it in a water bath or on a griddle not the microwave. Depending how bad your reclaim situation is you should be able to get it out with a little shaking without warming up the everclear.

are you heating it up to save time? i just soak overnight and agitate a lot.

whats the weather like in your area? maybe leaving it outside for the sun to warm it may help...?

i warm ec to dissolve bho to winterize. Heat water, then sit bottle in it.
Warm, like a bottle left in the car in the sun.

i crack the seal a few times to release pressure but i'm not getting it hot so only a little hiss.

do microwaves produce an open flame or spark (sans metal objects)? I'm pretty confident they don't.

Here's the MSDS for 200 proof ethanol (more flammable than Everclear): http://www.sciencelab.com/msds.php?msdsId=9923955

Notice the autoignition temperature; 685˚F. That is fucking hot. So unless the microwave creates an ignition source, or it manages to reach temps of 685˚ (not sure how), it's unlikely that you'll cause a fire from microwaving alcohol.

I've microwaved alcohol dozens of times through different microwaves and have never had an issue. I only microwave it in 5-7 second segments and open the door each segment to ventilate the fumes. Doesn't take much more than 15-20 secs total and I stop the instant I see bubbles start to form.

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS! I have heard of people blowing up their ovens because heating ISO in an enclosed space too quickly can caused a reaction which leads to explosion.

Please, for the love of baby jesus, do not microwave any flammable material!

no they arnt supposed to but ive seen static sparks in mine when no metal was present.... microwaves are not safe to put explosive vapors inside.

if you wont blast butane in your kitchen dont put ethanol in the microwave.... it heats to erratically to be considered safe.... more like "use at own personal risk."

side note... using a candle warmer or hot plate or waterbath is the safest way to heat ethanol (everclear). in a wide open space... you can get drunk on vapor!

personal experience!

edit: in my experience its actually easier to just heat the piece either on a hot plate in an oven or with hot water.... that will help heat the oil and evap some water before you add everclear... and will prevent the accidental evaporation of heating the alcohol... it doesnt have to vaping temp hot.... just warm.

An oven is different though. They have exposed heating elements that are definitely over the autoignition temperature (685).

Why risk it? A water bath is a simple solution and you shouldn't have to heat the ec up that much anyways

If you're seeing sparks go off in your microwave without metal that's dangerous already, you need a new microwave.

I was always under the same impression that microwaving alcohol = explosion for sure but after reading many comments across many sites saying they've microwaved alcohol I'm more inclined to try it now. If Bouldorado says he's done it I think that's proof right there it's [relatively] safe.

After looking up some youtube videos I think so long as you don't just set it for 5 minutes and walk away you'll be okay. Do it in 5 seconds intervals, open the microwave and touch the ethanol to see how warm it is and don't let it get to a dangerous temperature.

to each their own.... I wouldnt put alcohol in an oven or microwave of any kind.... just to warm the alcohol up.... hell... I can just put iso inside my rig and run hot water over the outside of the glass and it warms the alcohol inside...

the sad thing is that there is a label on the coffee mug from McDonalds cause some dumbass blamed the staff for not mentioning the coffee was hot when he stuck it between his legs... and chainsaws come with warning not to stop the blade with your genitals cause... someone fucking asked themselves I wonder if I can stop this like blade with the crotch of my pants.

some things are not a good idea even if others say they got away with it....

im just suggesting its not a smart idea... not that it wont work....

In the end it's really up to personal judgement: if you feel it's safe, do it, otherwise, don't.

And about that coffee lawsuit. It was actually an elderly woman who was severely burnt, not some asshole who was looking to make a quick buck. Apparently the mcdonalds they went to kept the coffee much hotter than mcdonalds policy- like close to boiling temperature. Until I saw a documentary about the subject, I thought someone was just sue-happy, but turns out the plaintiff was just trying to recover medical bills and something for pain and suffering.

IMO the same way dosage determines toxicity, safety procedures determine danger. Walking a tightrope 100 stories high isn't truly dangerous if you have a safety harness/net :2c:

just use a torch and apply the heat directly to the ethanol...:tinfoil:

oh wait... no... dont do that

whats the reason for heating ethanol again?

the op was asking if heating the everclear before cleaning the rig would help.....

yes, i was asking about heating everclear as a way to loosen the claim easier than using it at room temp. i wont be heating it up at all. i'll prob just heat up the outside of the glass by running it under warm water, or maybe leaving my piece in my car on a hot day for an hour or so and then adding the ec.

thanks all.

and btw, fuck McDonalds. :nope::goon::shit::zombie:

Warm everclear will cool quickly in contact with thick cold glass. I would use a heat gun or hair dryer to heat up your piece, if I didn't just torch it first. Me, I leave my piece in the sun, and the reclaim pools to the bottom for me to scoop out with a dab tool.
