Going domeless in Spring 2014

Doug

Just passing time
I have been thinking about going the domeless route these days, but the options seems endless! So many different companies with their designs, and now I'm seeing a lot more than Ti: glass, quartz, even ceramic!? Who's acquired some good info on what are the pros and cons of all this brands these days?

I'm used to using a quartz cup with dome, and I have to say I am preferential to quartz. I have an open mind though, so enlighten me on all the new technologies! What's your favorite? Why?

Great Scott!
I can't give you a scientific pro/con list, but I can tell you after trying glass, quartz and ti....I prefer my no brand quartz nails over any name brand ti nails I've ever tried.

I can also say glass nails are a total waste of money. It cracked at room temp randomly one day.

Quartz I haven't had one break, its been a few months, it tastes better than TI, and its cheaper. Its all wins. I'd need to break like 12 quartz nails to equal the cost of one good TI nail, and I am yet to break my first one.

I was going to post this in the accessories thread... but this is domeless... and apparently it can be bic powered.... I dig em for the bic property alone.... quave club quartz banger.... they seem to run around 160$ which seems high!.... but it is pretty cool if u can heat it with a bic...

This thing looks like it could have some potential, especially for low temp dabs. BUT the price!!?
No way.
I feel like sending a pic to Oregonglassblower on ioffer and asking if he can make this.:dog:
Would that be wrong? Hmmm.

A bic lighter won't heat a quartz nail. How did you get that idea? [edit] Ahh there's a bic for size comparison in the youtube vid you posted.

To the OP: I'd check out a quartz castle style nail for under fifty bucks.

More like wishful thinking I suppose... if it was thin enough it may work. But yea mostly mis interpreted video.

Edit: Btw thanks for a link to the castle style. Ive been looking for one but couldnt seem to find one.... just the typical cup and tube.

Totally took @mrboote 's advice and ordered a quartz castle. BHOmbs all day and super easy heat. It looks large, but actually since its hollow it heats and cools faster. I very dig this on the new gordo recycler.

:ko::rip::zombie:

Mine is half as tall as the one in the picture. Which is a nice change.

I am just getting into concentrates. For a someone just getting into it, would you recommend I go straight into a domeless setup or should I be using a standard dome?

What are the pros and cons of each?
Pardon my ignorance if these are elementary questions:)

I ordered a quartz castle as well. It should be here any day now. I can't wait to try it out.
I scorched the first few dabs like I always do with new quartz, but once I figured out it doesnt need as much heat as my old nail its a breeze.... I got the 14mm which willfit 14mm male and female and it will fit 18mm male a little loosely so it covers pretty much all my glass. U will enjoy it for sure.

@FlyingLow it depends..... if you have no rigs with male fittings I would say yes. Going strait to domeless will probably be cheapest cause u wont need an adapter dome and nail. With a domeless there is one less thing to fumble. I preferred to use quartz so your options are a little more limited than Ti, but the price rocks. Working withing quartz u can be in a domeless for under 60 bucks no doubt! I think I git my castle for 45 or so shipped from chief cottonnouth with 420 discount.

Plus heres my big rave.

I drop bhombs and am not a fan of the dabber [personal choice] so when I drop bombs on a dome nail I have to be careful. If you pull before the ball of oil hits the nail you will end up pulling the falling blob into the dome instead of letting it hit the nail... which wastes the dab. With the castle you can start pulling before you drop the ball cause there is no way for it to fall through.

Love it love it love it.

That post might have been misleading, you can get knock off MS buckets for that price, but depending on the artist they are just as good. A real MS bucket would be 300-500 (used-new cost)

Where are y'all buying these from?

How will the experience/efficiency be any different than if I went with the cheapest setup at the LHS? I don't really want to cheap out, but hobby funds are growing scarce!

14m GonG adapter ($15)
14m Dome ($15)
Ti Nail ($40)

Totaly with you... but you already spent as much as a castle quartz cost..... really its just a matter of what u prefer. I like a dome some times.... but
http://chiefcottonmouth.com/collections/all/products/quartz-castle-domeless-nail
The 14mm fits 14male and female and 18mm male too. Its $40 plus $7 to ship usps.... plus use CHIEF420 code and get a nice discount of about $6...

Not a bad domeless to fit 3 kinds of joints and.... quartz. If ur not into quartz idk but Ti is always so much more expensive.

thank you farscaper!
Thats the exact one I got a day ago. Ive been passing it around to all my pieces and it rocks. 10 seconds with the bernzomatic TS4000 torch on a bottle of propane. My vector quit working a month ago and I had to pull that puppy out. If you need a torch its a good cheap way to go. And it gets the job done in a hurry and does it reliably

After all I have seen, I think that is the one to get and both of your testimonials helps a lot

I love the fact I can buy this one nail from Chief Cotton mouth and be done; rather than buying a male-to-male adapter, a dome, and a nail.

Thanks guys!

@farscaper

How's the taste with that castle? I've had cheap quartz domeless nails and I would always get a "plasticy" taste. Does it taste as clean as a glass nail or a low temp Ti dab? How hard is it to find the right temp? I've had difficulty finding a sweet spot with quartz.

Dude I know the taste. Your hitting it waaaaaay to hot is what it means. Let it cool down more.... or as I have been learning, dont heat it up as much.

The flavor is excellent on that quartz castle though. Ive not had Ti in some time.... I wasnt a huge fan, but I might try it again some day.

@FlyingLow its cool. Its like the quartz bangers that I posted above, but it only works in 10mm female joints. Anything else would need an adapter. It u got 10mm watertools then hey, but if u have 14 or 18mm stuff I wouldnt bother. Which is why I wouldnt. All my glass is 14mm or 18mm.... but mostly 14. So the quartz castle suits my needs as a 1 nail for many pieces better.

I would like a lil 10mm pendant rig some day... but ill prolly get a castle for it too lol.

I am going to go with the one you linked to, but SB did just send an email directing me to this one. I like it, but think I am going to go with the more traditional design linked above:
http://shop.sheldonblack.com/SB-Slipper-10mm-SB-Slipper-M-10.htm
Oh shit this thing looks nice, I wish the hole was higher up/more separated so as to prevent anything going down the tube but at a third the price of a banger I won't complain.

Title of the page says 10/18mm but doesn't look like there's any mention of an 18mm version on the site/internet. If I have to get an adapter too after shipping it's gunna run me like ~100 all together for this so might just wait and see if I can find a banger for ~115, if not I'll go for the slipper.

I feel you on the banger having a possible loss point. Nothing better than sucking a nice big last dab of the night bhomb right down the hole into the water.

May I just inform you guys that just happened... a ball got sucked strait into the slots on the castle and.....

Nothing... no loss no bummer it just vaped.

So asside from flat dropping and losing a bit in the carpet you really cant miss or mess to bad with this style...

Course its only my opinion.
