Steel Screens

My previous thread about screen materials was closed so I had to create another to ask this, sorry.

The screens I ordered should arrive today but they are dirt cheap (100 under $5) and I am wondering... Are any steel screens likely to be stainless steel, or are there also plain steel screens? And, if so, are they safe to use as well or is the safety of steel screen limited to stainless? Chromium aside, of course. ;)

Again, other than cleaning them they will not get direct flame, just the conduction and convection the crucible of my HA gets.

They will most likely be SS, if you ordered Pipe screens you should be fine. I've never heard of anyone really having a problem with screens. They are sold most often in stainless steel or brass, never seen them made of anyother metal in 45 years of herb use to be honest. Some people don't like brass others like me don't care if they are ss or Brass.

I think you are probably right and I needn't worry. Over the years in emergencies when I had to make a pipe out of available materials (potatoes are great for that) I have cut out a piece of a broken window screen and used it. It didn't take long for the direct flame to degrade it substantially, but that is obviously not metal meant to be heated like that. I would be afraid to guess what all I got in my lungs from that...

Just FYI, they arrived and the package they came in says "stainless steel". They are also much finer than the screen on the bottom of the crucible so would probably reduce particles that might result from grinding (if I felt a need to do so). They seem decent screens for less than a nickle each.

You'll find the finer screens require more maintenance cleaning to make sure they're not clogged.
However, there does seem to be a positive effect to reducing particle size in the vapor.

Always nice to have both, especially when you can orders sets for ~$2

Yeah, they are definitely fine enough to need more attention. Maybe a good thing I got 100 after all... ;)
