First time making ABV Brownies...

So as i have saved up 20 g's of dark ABV thank you airizer extreme q, i wondered what i wanted to make with the ABV. Me and some pals decided on brownies. i have a few questions before i do this experiment though. 1) do i have enough to make a batch. 2) ive seen various recipes and videos, should i infuse it with oil or butter and strain or mix directly in and bake on low for 1.5x the time recommended?

If you guys have any other tips they'd be greatly appreciated. THanks in advanced too

20 g's is more than enough for a batch of brownies. The brownie recipes I use call for 1/2 cup of oil and 1/2 cup of ABV - which is around 14 g. I've done several batches of medium brown ABV-based brownies. All w/o fresh product and all very effective for anyone's who's tried 'em. 1 brownie/dose. Your mileage may vary if your ABV is darker - less goodies.

It's better imo to infuse in oil or butter vs mixing in directly. Should be more effective as THC is fat-soluble. Should be less likely to cause stomach upset as less plant matter is ingested.

You could try the cold infusion method (@jeffp) or simmer in oil or butter and strain. I bake at 310F max. Coconut oil is recommended as it is very high in fat and is good fat.

let me just start of saying i have never baked abv brownies before. but i work in kitchens so i know about making brownies.
IMO defiantly infuse with oil... you won't get as much abv flavour and defiantly won't get the texture. find a really good brownie recipe online infuse the abv with the butter/oil and depending on the reciepies bake temperature adjust it accordingly. i wouldnt bake over 325. i think low and slow will be your best bet.

Ok so i think im ganna do the oil method but how can i finely grind the abv or should i strain it

If you want bake directly with abv, you could just powder it in a coffee grinder and substitute 1:1 for flour. I don't recommend this method since a) the abv is gritty, even when powdered, and b) there is a strong (and disgusting) abv flavor.

I'd get some coconut oil, and just put that and the abv in a pan in your oven (@ the lowest temp) for 45 min. For the extraction, use ~25% more oil than the recipe calls for, so you'll have enough to bake with after it's been strained. Use cheesecloth/cotton cloth to strain.

Up to you really. Some prefer to grind and cold-infuse, some prefer to strain. Straining has the advantage of reducing plant matter (easier on tummy), though can be a pita.

Are you planning on doing the cold infusion in oil or simmering? There are many threads here on infusing oil and brownies. Such as this one.

It boils down to personal preference, some like to dump the herb in and go while others (including myself) prefer to extract into oil and then proceed with the recipes. There is no right answer, totally personal preference.

I will say that the finer you grind the herb - the harder it is to strain well.

I've taken a mortar/pestle to ABV before extraction to gain new surface area and it does work okay though not as well as the coffee grinder but less dust sized particles that are resistant to the strainer.

I will also say that while cheesecloth works well as a strainer - it also eats some of your material. I prefer to use very fine mesh stainless strainers or for smaller amounts I use a fine mesh nylon tea straining basket. Much less loss of the goodies I've found in my experimentation.

I've been infusing coconut oil this weekend myself though this time for a salve for a friend :D

Good luck. Have to keep experimenting and figure out what methods you like best.

Im going with the oil and abv in a jar for 24 hours. Then crockpot mini it for 30 mins. I think this will do the trick. I will strain a coffee filter most likely. 20 gs is deffinately enough for 1 batch right. Its dark abv also???

it might take a really long time to strain throughout a coffee filter. most oil or butter is very viscous. i would say use cheese cloth... if you really want to get all of the abv out then use a coffee strainer. how dark is the abv...

I mean its dark brown. Vaped 2 or 3 times with the arizer extreme q on 392 degress dependin on how packed the bowl was. I think its a bit darker then some on the forum. I think ill go the cheese cloth route. I should by the time i make then have a little more like 24 g's

That's too much - approaching 2 batches worth. You want 1/2 cup of ABV (unground) for 1/2 cup of oil.

so if i measure it out and i have 3/4 cups with 3/4 cup left over you think i can make 2 strong batches. i think 1 huge batch would be sick??

I'd just make one batch. 20g is not a huge amount of abv, especially if it's been thoroughly vaped. You don't really need to measure the oil out beforehand; just use enough to fully cover the abv by 1/2" or so. This will probably give you more than you need, so simply measure out what the recipe calls and save the rest.

I used to bake for over a year. Until I made a batch that was too strong and put me off baking since.:ko:

I started with cookies then brownies then choc chip plain muffins which were the tastiest as the they had a lot less sugar than cookies and brownies. Anyway I always used butter as the thc is absorbed into butter much better. I tried various methods of heating. From slow lengthy low temp frying on a hot plate. To quick cook frying in high temp (be careful as you can get very stoned while it is cooking) to using a slow cooker over 4 days constantly at a low temperature.

The final cooking method which I found the best was to get a pot with a lid. Use a small coffee grinder on your bud to make it as fine as possible. Cook on a sizzle for about 30 minutes with the lid on. Check that it is not bubbling up to much. Once the 30 minutes is up let it rest for an hour then put your muffin mix into the same pot. Some people say to filter out the bud with cheesecloth but I found that to be a waste of product.

Thats pretty much it you have not wasted any butter/herb in the process and by cooking with the lid on you have not lost any thc into the air. Which I only realised was happening after about my 15th batch.

And always lick the pot and spoon once you have finished.

Side note: A tip to keep the muffins fresh is to just put them in zip lock bags and freeze them.

Pay no mind to those voices in my head
My first attempt at ABV brownies, yesterday, was a huge success. Even better than I had hoped. I used about 1/3 cup of lightly browned ABV in 1/2 cup of canola oil, no other additives. 24 hours in a mason jar (lid on) in a slow cooker, then strained using double sheet of cheese cloth. I used half the oil in a single batch of brownie mix, and saved the other half for later. I cut the batch into 1/8th size pieces and sampled half a piece at 8pm last night. By 9:30, I was nicely couch locked with a good tv show. This surprised me, since prior exp with purchased edibles took about 3 hours before I felt any effect. By 10:30 I was in bed and slept like a baby (which is what I was hoping for). Up once at 2:30 and still feeling a little high. Not bad for first attempt! Thanks FC!!! :D
Question: is there anything that can be done with the oily mess that gets strained?

I would 100% strain the bud out of whatever your making. you don't want a burnt bud bit ruining the taste and texture of your brownie. You can just use a cheese cloth to strain it or I even use a clean bandana.

@Bezerkben that is super interesting about the oil holding less flavor than the butter

OK, maybe a dumb question but... After you cook and strain your ABV would be worth it to throw the leftover plant matter into the brownie mix to use any residual THC left in it?

@sodak14

Not really. Soaking in fat will extract most of the remaining cannabinoids. The tiny bit leftover is not worth the taste and gritty texture that abv will add.

If your top priority is to not waste a single THC molecule (and taste, texture, and nausea are irrelevant to you) then my recommendation is to skip the oil-making step entirely and simply put the finely-ground ABV directly into the brownie mix.

Thank you for your help. I was just curious but its sounds like it not really worth the taste or effort.
