If a ti nail has been used with a propane torch is it still usable ? Will a burn off from a butane torch o the job ?
Thanks

I'm not sure about the nail, but propane exhaust after burning is CO2 (carbon dioxide). I know that there are mercaptans in propane for leak detection. That may give a funny taste although the food I cook with propane never tastes like mercaptans. I think a butane burn wouldn't hurt. You can even boil the thing, ISO bathe it, scrub it with a brush. It's titanium, I don't think ANY of that will hurt it. I am reasonably sure that you should not trash it!

Is it necessarily bad for your health to use a propane torch when heating up a nail ?

I do not think that it is any worse than butane. If you read the can or in some cases only the MSDS most butane contains a small percentage of propane. You will want to use the tip of the flame and be careful because the potential for maybe overheating the Ti nail.

No OP, definitely not. Propane causes oxidation faster because it's at a higher temperature than butane (or heats it hotter or whatever it is) but other than that there's no real difference. The only thing you have to watch out for is MAPP gas which burns too hot and would risk structural damage to the titanium.

Quoted for Truth :D

Like diehard said,
most refined butane cans have propane in them already (Even vector has 10%).
You're [mostly] burning the same chemicals, either way.

Also, like hishighness said, the issue with propane torches is the higher heat. Yes, it heats up your nail faster, but the excessive heat can accelerate TI oxidation - which ultimately can a nail's heat retention.

To be fair though, there are methods of using a propane flame that are not too excessive with heat. :2c:
EX. Using the tip of the outer light-blue flame on low VS using the tip of the inner white-blue flame on full blast.

I love how the MAPP gas heats the nail up sooo fast though.. my buddy has been using that for a little while.. he has a pretty basic Ti nail so I doubt he cares if there is a down side.. but yeah that nail heats up super fast.. It gets it glowing in like 5 sec..
