'I'm Going To Prison For Working At A Pot Shop That Was Legal In My State'

I tried to read more about it, but nothing states how big the operation was, other than he worked for a collective of dispensaries. Once something gets large enough, it attracts federal attention. Does anyone know how many plants he was tending?

I don't know much about growing but I figure you probably need hundreds, if not thousands, of plants to supply "thousands and thousands of members of our cooperatives.".

Sounds like a pretty big operation so I wonder if there was a bigger issue at stake; ie, tax evasion.

That's what I was wondering. I've seen a few dispensaries go down for evasion/laundering, and the feds came in and cracked down on everyone working there. From the article, the guy's lawyer said, 'don't worry they only bust the kingpin'. Well if you're growing thousands and thousands of plants for multiple dispensaries, guess what? Maybe YOU'RE the kingpin!

Not to be unsympathetic to the guy's plight, but my understanding is that the law governing production for medical use was designed for individual patients or groups of patients. When it turned into big business, all kinds of craziness was unleashed.

I don't have details on this particular case but in my experience all CA dispensaries understand the feds prosecute for >99 plants. This is somewhat complicated by state guidelines that allow collectives to grow for multiple members. In my opinion nobody in the legal mmj biz here puts more than 99 plants in one grow. Most of the people caught up in the crackdown a few years back were following state law and got singled out by ambitious prosecutors to be made examples of. They pulled the same trick on Ed Rosenthal a few years back.
