Tootsie Time

Ok here are the Tootsie directions -

**Added bonus of making these is that they do not get crazy hard like the store kind, so they will not strain your dental work or jaw muscles. I like my candy to be pain-free.**

Here's how:2 oz unsweetened chocolate2Tbl butter1/4tsp salt1/2 cup dark corn syrup1tsp vanilla3/4 cup dry milk2 1/2 cups powdered sugarMelt chocolate & butter (super easy method: pyrex cup in microwave on low for 45sec). Mix with salt, syrup, vanilla, & dry milk. Adding about a cup at a time knead in powdered sugar. Shape into hearts by rolling into a ball, cleaving it and pressing sides down ~or~ roll out like dough & use cookie cutters. Wrap in waxed paper or store in airtight container. That is, if you don't eat them all the second they are done (like we usually do).

Seriously easy and oh-so-good. Better go make some more....

And Pop Rocks -

First you'll need to gather a few supplies -

Ingredients
2 cups Sugar
1 cup Powdered Sugar
1/3 cup Corn Syrup
1/8 cup of water
1 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Flavor Oil
A few drops liquid Food Coloring
1/4 cup Citric Acid Powder (do not get the liquid!)

Gear
Candy thermometer
Saucepan
Cookie Sheet
Hammer
Freezer Bags

Mix the sugar, water & corn syrup together until blended in a saucepan:

Now, stir regularly until it begins to boil over medium heat. Then let sit boiling until it gets heated to 305 degrees Fahrenheit:

While things are heating up on the stove, spread the powdered sugar over your cookie sheet and sprinkle half of the citric acid over that:

Once the sugar mixture is at 305 degrees, remove from stove, let temperature drop to 275 degrees and add the flavoring and color. Keep in mind - the candy will naturally have a yellowish sheen, so don't have your heart set on an exact color shade - I used kelly green and it came out like pistachio. Now add the baking soda. It will immediately get foamy and thick so work fast and pour it out on the cookie sheet. Sprinkle the remaining citric acid powder on top:

Allow the candy to cool & harden (approx. 10-20min) and then break into large piece by hand and stick them in a freezer bag. I recommend double bagging so the bits are 100% contained while breaking into little bits. This is the part the kids will really love - get out the hammer and go to town evenly smashing until you get small pieces (don't go too crazy and pulverize it into powder!).

They don't quite pop like the real thing due to the lack of CO2 in the processing but they do fizz and such

lol.. We don't actually have kids help since most items in this section are made with MJ.

I make a lot of hard candy... if you're going to get into that you might look into some cheap candy molds. Makes it SO much easier and makes your pieces look nice too. I like ones that you just pour and fill the whole tray for ease. Like these: http://shop.lorannoils.com/templates/product.aspx?ProductGuid=5542-0000&GroupGuid=55

I would imagine that would be the best route. It doesn't take much butter so my guess is it would have to be very strong or you would take larger servings. Please report how it goes it you try it :)

You can also just get a bag of tootsie rolls, melt with some butter and cut into pieces. Much simpler way to get cheeba chews

Fair point but melt down can have its own issues if you aren't careful. Reheating corn syrup can cause it to get grainy especially if you do it in the microwave.

Decisions, decisions. I'm definitely going to make it, only question is which route should I go?

Excited to hear what you choose and your result. If you decide to do a meltdown I suggest baine marie style (glass or metal bowl over a low simmering pot of water) to avoid grittiness or scorching of the tootsies.

Sorry I fell off for a while, tootsie rolls put me down haha so I made the tootsie rolls from scratch and HOLY CRAP they are amazing. They're not quite as chewy as store bought but the flavor really is phenomenal and they work fast! I gave then out to a bunch if friends Saturday and I'm still being asked for more.

Go exactly with the above recipe. I'd say for a light smoker 1-2 tootsies would work. A heavy vaper like myself needs 5-7 to do the trick. This recipe is highly recommended though, I did two batches and it made about 130 tootsie rolls. It's a great way to make butter stretch out. I think I'm going to make a few more batches and keep them in the fridge. Good luck whenever you try, but it's pretty easy. Vape on

That's great! Thanks for reporting back with results. Im looking into good medibles for a friend in a non-legal state. I have a few purchased edibles to try first but if I like the effect I will try these with infused coconut oil (im dairy allergic) will have to figure out how to sub the other dairy ingredients though...

Yea it seemed like the dry milk was essential in the texture and flavor. I could be way wrong about texture though, I want to figure out hard candies. Or what else can I do with my avb?

Hard candies are dairy free FYI and if you coat with powdered sugar, store in a sealed mason jar - they store very well.

Glad to hear the tootsie recipe worked out, might have to try that one ;)

Yeah I was thinking I could use coconut milk powder or something close to it for the powdered milk. I know I saved some hard candy recipes somewhere I will go hunt them down for you. Some take canna butter some don't.

o you have any of the dairy free recipes you don't mind sharing? Many of the ones ihave use canna butter but I figured I couls use canna coconut oil instead. I do have some that are dairy free but haven't looked at them much since I favorite them.

There is already a candy thread here and I use a variation of the recipe posted here...though I don't use the plastic wrap:

Candies
You might want to skim that thread. Very good results with hard candy and not only dairy free but fat free too lol.
