Cannabis Oil Capsules with a rice cooker?

James C

EDM and vapor enthusiast
Hi!

I am planning to make cannabis oil capsules, essentially by filling empty gelatin capsules with cannabis oil.

I've read that the best way to do this is to use a slow-cooker (crock pot) with a few grams of herb in a shot or 2 of coconut oil and cook for a few hours, then fill the capsules with the oil.

I was wondering if it would be possible to do this in a rice cooker? I don't have a slow cooker. Or is that just a terrible idea? Do rice cookers keep a constant low temp (160-200˚F) like slow cookers?

Thanks!

agreed. all the rice cookers I've seen are either on-off or fuzzy logic which has a bunch of settings, which i suspect all get too hot. You could probably rig up a pot inside of pot like a double boiler or a bowl on top of a pot with a cover that could possibly steam heat it.

but yeah... most of the big box stores have a good selection of inexpensive crock pots for about $10-20. hardware stores too. You could even use it to make a shitload of soup or stews and you'll save money on lunches and dinners for the week and than buy more stuff!!

freaking love my crock pot in the winter!!!

Rice cooker would get too hot, but I can highly recommend a slow cooker for bigger batches of canna-coco oil.

My method:
1. Use a ratio of 1C coconut oil to 1oz bud/leaf trim
2. Finely grind your herb, add to slow cooker
3. Add coconut oil
4. Add 2:1 water:coconut oil
5. Turn to high for 30 mins or until all coconut oil melts
6. Turn to low (or keep warm if your cooker has this setting) for 12-24 hours, stirring every 4 or so hours
7. Pour hot (use gloves it gets hand-burning hot) mixture through cheesecloth into a large bowl, squeezing the bud ball to get all the liquid out
8. Let cool in fridge (counter works too but takes longer)
9. 'Pop' oil off when hard, and pout out dirty water
10. Enjoy!

I find the low n' slow in a slow cooker, combined with water added gives the best results every time. Since water boils before THC burns, the water acts as a good safeguard for overcooking. If you want to speed things up on the front end, pour boiled water into the mix to get everything melted and mixed. Its fine to leave overnight once going or while out for the day without it burning.

Another benefit I've found with the ultra long cooking/extraction times is that everthything's decarbed for eating when done, no need to do so beforehand or bake it again into cookies etc. My go-to for ingestion lately has been pills - stealth and quick. Pills also help keep the sugar and flour intake down instead of eating cookies or brownies and have no weedy taste at all.

To make them, I just re-thaw the coconut oil after all the steps above are done and use an eye dropper to fill some 00 sized gel caps. As the oil is solid at room temp (most of the year around here) after eye dropping, I leave them in a stand to harden before capping and then it's go time. Caps are also good (best!?) for dosing, since you can roughly figure out how strong they'll be based on # of caps at the end vs. grams of herb into the mix - presuming you have an idea of what you're shooting for.

For small batches, this method might not work the best depending on the size of your slow cooker/crock pot, but is pretty awesome IMHO if you have an ounce or larger.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately I don't have a slow cooker, but I think you have convinced me to purchase one.

I've tried to make them 4 times now using a double boiler method (not rice cooker, everyone is right thats a bad idea) and they haven't worked at all.

Here's the method I was following:
http://boards.cannabis.com/concentrates/140616-cannabis-capsules-step-step-guide.html

What I do:
1. Finely grind weed (1g for 10 capsules)

2. Make a double boiler by suspending a jar in a pot of lightly boiling water (but not touching the bottom, so its staying at 100˚C). Adding 2 teaspoons organic virgin coconut oil to the jar, allow to melt, and add the weed.

3. Let "cook" for 3 hours, stirring every 15 minutes or so. I have also tried varying this for 2-6 hours with no luck. Poor warm oil and residual weed into capsules, cool in fridge. I've also tried decarbing the weed first for 30 minutes at 250˚F, but no luck, and have tried straining and not straining out the herb afterwards.

The oil always turns a dark green color and smells very potent (but not burnt), but clearly its not good.

Is there something critical I'm doing wrong here? Or is a slow cooker just significantly better? Because I have heard success using the double boiler method (tho not as much as with a slow cooker).

Your problem is it is way too weak. 1g of herb will only make 4 doses at best.

^ this. I usually aim to get about 1g bud into oil per dose, but I have a high tolerance. With large batches, you can always guesstimate how much you're dosing too - by dividing how many grams in vs final weight of oil/#of pills at the end, you can keep your consumption somewhat consistent.

Oh damn, well that would explain a lot I'd probably have to eat the whole jar then if thats the case lol. So would you recommend that I use less coconut oil then and put 1g in half the amount of oil? Cuz the way it is now it fills up 10 caps all the way.

Cool, ill increase weed or decrease the capsule number. Do you think I still need to decarb then in the oven before cooking the oil in the double boiler?

It's hard to go as low as you are wanting to go with this.

I would use 2.5g to 10 caps. The heat from the double boiler should be fine to decarb just keep it low and slow as others have said.

If you want to be safe you can decarb. Just don't do it at over 250. In a tightly aluminum foil cover dish. Preheated oven, 250 degrees for 20 minutes, then turn oven off and let completely cool.

Awesome thanks for the advice! So are you saying 2.5g to 10 caps because doing 1g in 4 caps would likely be too little to actually work?

Also, for decarb, does it matter if I put the foil into a mason jar or something to keep the smell in? Or does this not make it work well?

Well, like I said. I think the double boiler will dcarb for you, but if not put the weed in the mason jar and tightly cover it with foil and you should have no smell.

Also, have you considered the fact that edibles just might not work for you? Have you had edibles in the past which got you high? Some peoples metabolism makes edible a bad option.

Interesting idea. Come to think of it, edibles have never worked for me in the past (except once), but I just assumed me or my friends made it incorrectly.

The one exception tho was a very potent space muffin I bought in Amsterdam that had me extremely high for 24 hours. So it did work that time.

Thanks for the replies! For using 2.5g for 10 caps tho, how much oil would you recommend? I tried visualizing this laying out the ingredients today, and 2.5g of even finely ground herb in 2 teaspoons oil would be more like "damp weed coated in some oil" than "oil with weed in it" lol. But I don't want to increase the oil too much cuz then they will just be diluted again.

i was thinking of trying this with abv do you think it work?have you tried this method with abv? what do you think the ratio of abv-coconut oil would be?

I've only ever done it with un-ABV. Since there is less to absorb into the oil, maybe double the amount of ABV from what I suggested?

i made the coconut oil, then at room temperature filled the capsules. after i left them at room temp for about 24 not realizing that the capsules were warping and liquifying. should i be refrigerating right after filling? i used vegetarian capsules. should i try gelatine based product? anybody else have this issue?

Rice cooker??? Do you really still using it? I bought multicooker REDMOND 4502 with book with100 recipes! I tried ½ of them and… It is fantastic! Also it can do time delay. Why you use cooker, is it better? In what?

How did these work for you, were they effective?
Also wondering what you did to solve your capsule issue

The geletin caps are more robust. Also after filling I drop them in a container sitting in ice to cool quickly like BadKittySmiles teaches in her guide. Use paper towel.

Hold up, dudes. I'm starting to wonder if any of you actually HAVE rice cookers.

All rice cookers have 2 speeds - one which is actually just slightly LOWER than the "high" position in a crock pot, and the "keep warm" setting. On my rice cooker, and every one I've had for years, as soon as you plug it in, it comes on on the low heat setting.

Now arguably that low setting is too low, and maybe the high setting is too high - but has anybody actually measured this?

Mine's plugged in with half a pot of water in it. I'll measure water temps at both settings. I'll report back later today.

OK it's later.

On low (warm setting) 139F
On high (cook setting) 204F

Crockpots are cooking at about 209F.

The Lil' Dipper cooks at a lower temp - it isn't actually supposed to cook, its supposed to be a potpourri warmer. I don't know where mine is at the moment or I'd measure it.

Rival brand crockpots don't have two different temperatures, despite having "low" and "high" settings. The low setting is intended to get contents up to 209F over a 6 hour period, and the "high" setting is supposed to get there in about 3 hours.

Older crockpots have actual different temps. Some modern manufacturers other than Rival may also have 2 different temps for low and high. The only way to know is to fill your crockpot up with water, set it to the setting you want to test. Run the test at 8 hours after you're sure its stabilized, or take readings every 15 minutes until it has stabiliized for at least an hour.

Rice cookers don't get too hot as another poster opined. However they have 2 truly different temp settings, the upper setting is about the same as the eventual landing place for a crockpot, and they stabilize temp much faster.

BTW, I'm at 4500 feet which means the boiling point is 204F instead of 212F. So at lower altitude, your rice cooker may top out a little bit higher, but not by a lot. If you are at high altitude, your crockpot will be topping out at the same temps as your rice cooker.

Both rice cookers and crockpots are intended to top out at slightly below the boiling point - but the boiling point changes with altitude. Ultimately this means that whatever you cook in either device will take a little longer to cook and will need a little more water because the lower surface tension and pressure at altitude means water transitions to steam sooner and boils off faster. That means the water can't reach as high a temperature.

Decarbing will work best in the oven when at high altitude.
