Discontinued Purple-Days Vaporizer

Ha, I did actually take a few shots of the breakdown...

The bottom is a real pain, and I lack a bunch of tools, but I started by trying to razor blade off the leather. I quickly realized that the the leather was almost impossible to salvage so I gave up on that and started ripping and scraping...
IMAG0759_zpsaa0e668c.jpg

Then sanded off the rest of the glued on leather and started breaking through the wood glue with an exacto knife....

IMAG0763_zps442b5f8d.jpg

Tom clearly never meant for this thing to come apart, and I was a little OCD about it so it took me forever, but I'm sure with the proper tools this this thing could be opened up fairly quickly. After getting through most of the wood glue I realized that part of this bottom plug was more solid than the rest and stated prying at it softly (you might be able to see that the part opposite the plug was actually connected and luckily broke off clean since I had weakened it by digging through the glue). Eventually it popped off...

IMAG0768_zps75463c0e.jpg

After that tedious process, I broke down the top. Here's an okay pic of the cracking that 3+ years of constant heat caused, and also my makeshift tool collection that I used to dismantle the PD...

IMAG0775_zps950ead04.jpg

Sorry, I don't have much to show for replacing the resistor and reassembly since I got in a little too much of a hurry. Basically it just involved unsoldering the wires that connect to the jack and redoing it just as Tom had done. You might notice in the next pic some pieces of bent metal that I originally tried to shim the larger piece of SS tubing with. I gave up on those larger pieces and went with roughly 1/8" strips (I think 3 or 4, not sure of the gauge, but whatever works as long as its snug) and surrounded the tubing. This next pic is everything that was needed to replace the resistor and then reassemble...

IMAG0821_zpsc1d5ff7d.jpg

It's back to vapeing like a champ, and the core feels crazy solid when hot and when cold. I haven't decided how to seal the bottom back up yet since I would kind of like it to be easier to take apart in the future, so for now I have a piece of cork cut out to keep the air flow only coming from the top like it should.

Sorry for the huge post, but that's what it takes I guess :-)
Great insight into how it is assembled. Thanks!

^^ Suggestion, Drops. You may want to edit your quote down next time and only use the text that adds context to what you're saying, eh?

Regarding the PD, TG, from you pics, it looks like there was no internal charring whatsoever. Is that true?

I miss my PD. Sometimes I feel like I sold an old friend. :(

@Drops, not entirely sure the gauge of the steel. I'm guessing it was around 30 or 40 gauge. I had it left over from some college welding courses years ago. I know the 20 gauge used for auto body repair was much too thick, the thin stuff, like what I used, could probably be found by searching common home repair stores on google...I'm guessing around 30 to 40+ gauge would work depending on how much wiggle room you got. SS steel would be ideal but I just made sure not to use aluminum since i've been taught that causes galvanic corrosion (again, not an expert on this stuff by any means). IMO, you could probably use very thin pieces of wood to shim it, but I just used what I had :-\

@lwien, THANKS, I meant to bring that up, just slipped my mind. No charing at all like people have speculated in the past. The wood had several cracks from the heat going up where the ss tubing met the wood and the worst cracks were at the bottom, which can be seen in one of those photos. I'm a natural skeptic, but Tom had this S down. There isn't enough heat there to char wood. The wood cracked (which I assume is where the extra space came from) and gained a slightly darker tint when compared to the outside but I could tell there was never any sign of combustion or overheating of the wood shell. The PD doesn't combust and neither does it's shell as long as the power source is correct... It's too damn simple!! :-D I trust the unit now more than ever after seeing the insides after running for three years. Sure I could think of ways to improve it's longevity, but other log Vape manufactures have clearly already done so :-)

I have other vapes, but when it comes to conservation and a smooth high, the PD is still where it's at in my book.

Wow this thread is still going. I wish they would update or continue their PDs after they built up a fair reputation online, not easily done might I say.

This is funny. The PD was my second vape as well. Ended up being my daily driver for over 4 years.

It was my daily for 2+ years. I use it as my aromatherapy(heating oils) vape right now. Once I get the Voltage Keeper I may have to do some experimenting.

i dunno if anyone recalls they wouldn't sell in their home state of arizona. probably wouldn't have mattered to you unless, like myself, you live in az. after pestering and pleading i was finally sent, at no charge, a box of spare parts to build my own. i wanna say this was 2008 approx. just dusted her off yesterday. she's going strong as day one. in the past 24 months i've gone thru and used to death a mflb, iolite, wispr, solo, and another mflb and another wispr. also forgot how little meds are used. so big up to purple days. still big milky cloudy puffs all this time later. top the pack off wif a bit of keif and you double yer fun.

I have one of the originals with the purple indicator lamp - probably about six years old - and it still performs wonderfully.

Tom would LOVE to hear that but for some odd reason, he's not reading his emails.

He keeps emailing me telling me that he has a brand new, never used PD that he'd like to send me. I keep emailing him back saying, "YESSSSSS. Send it to me", and then I get another email from him saying, "So do you want it or not?" I send him an email, saying, "Are you not getting my email responses?" and then 2 weeks later, he replies, "Why are you ignoring me? Do you want me to give it to someone else?"

FUCK !!!!!!!

Now I know what ghosts must feel like when they try to pick up something and can't. Either that or he's just fucking with me, in which case..............FUCK YOU TOM !!!

I'm kinda kidding, but this is really happening.......

On another note, he and Pammy are moving back to Oregon. Pam's got some serious health issues going on with her eyes. A real bummer.....

So Tom, if you're lurking here and reading this, answer your goddamn emails. ;)

Edit:
PS
I kind of exaggerated things here for a bit of comedic response. It's not really the PD that I'm after (as a matter of fact, I told him, thanks for the offer, but I really couldn't accept it), but rather I just want to make sure that my communications get through.

The PD is the original gold standard of log vapes why wouldn't you want one for free lol.

I'd take one for free! I still love my myrtle.

I'll admit that I thought to post to lwien that I'd take it off his hands, too. So I'll just post here instead about the rule:
Do not ask about being a beta tester or ask about freebies.

Damn you lwien for telling us about this! :cuss:

Lies? Not lies at all. Why? Well, since you asked....

It's not that I wouldn't want one. I'd just have a very difficult time accepting a free one and in my financial condition, I'd have a hard time buying one as well.

I had a PD that I used as my daily driver for over 4 years. My son, who is living on SSI due to the fact that he was born with mild cerebral palsy along with an IQ in the mid 70's has been dealing with some major pain issues due to his CP, really liked my PD. He always smoked before and with all of his ongoing health issues, I wanted him to have a vape. I told Tom about this, oh, probably about 4 years ago, and being that his birthday was coming up, I wanted to order a PD for him. Tom would have nothing to do with that but instead, sent him out a PD for a birthday present...............free of charge.

Later, my original Cherry PD was starting to run really hot due to the heat exchanger beginning to drop inside the body (after 3 years of use being on 24/7), so again, Tom sent me out an ASH PD free of charge as well.

Tom and Pammy have gone wayyyyyy overboard in showing kindness to both me and my son and so I would have a real difficult time accepting another favor from him even though I would LOVE to have a new PD in my arsenal.

Hope that answers your question.

Damn you lwien for telling us about this! :cuss:

Sorry......blame it on Jeff for talking about his purple LED PD. It's all his fault. :uhoh:

Tom and Pammy were always very nice to me. I had a lot of fun in this thread. It's a shame.
