PMS/PMDD and Menstrual Cramps

At the risk of introducing a topic that the majority of this board probably doesn't care about (if it doesn't completely freak them out), I thought I'd start this thread for the ladies of FC who use medical cannabis to help manage symptoms of PMS/PMDD and ease the actual soul-draining pain of menstruation.

Unfortunately, I regularly become mentally ill the week or so before I start my period (it seriously feels that way--PMDD), and once I do start, I tend to suffer extremely painful cramps, lower back pain, and aching legs (on top of being emotional and irritable and mentally ill). MMJ is one of the best ways for me to manage all these symptoms, and I'm always curious to hear from other women about what works from them (or from husbands, about their wives).

I've found that nothing helps bad cramps like high CBD meds. I've taken Endocann packaged CBD capsules in the past, have vaped the strain Omrita RX to great success, and, this morning, did a generous dab of Sour Tsunami shatter that literally took me from fetal position on my bed to being able to walk downstairs for a glass of water, at least.

Like I said, I'm always interested in knowing what works for others, because this is a truly hellish time of the month for me. So how about it, ladies of FC? Any tips, tricks, or suggestions? Favorite strains?

I'm counting on you. Seriously. :ugh:

Sorry can't help you, one of those lucky women that never had cramps or PMS and Menopause consisted of one month i didn't get my period and that was it. No hot flashes or any other sign ever. That's not much help to you , but didn't want you to be left twisting in the wind of the boys club ;)
I would think Indica or Indica dominant strains would be best for you to help with pain and there's always orgasms

You are lucky indeed! My sister has been diagnosed with endometriosis and I suspect that's my problem, as well (at least partially). I appreciate the response...I knew this was a thread that would appeal to only a fraction of the FC community! lol

If you suspect endometritis you really should go get diagnosed and treated, there's no need to be in severe pain every month :(

Unfortunately, the only treatment for endometriosis is surgery, which my sister has had twice (it only offers relief from symptoms temporarily before the whole process begins again). She only did the surgery because she was trying to get pregnant (which is apparently the best possible treatment for endometriosis). I'm not the kind of person who wants to have elective surgeries that will most likely need to be repeated and won't fix the actual problem. And because I'm not planning to get pregnant anytime soon...

It's odd because some months are terrible (either the PMDD and/or the physical pain), and some are relatively mild. I was on birth control at one point, but it really jacked up my stomach (I also have IBS) and I lived with constant nausea. I ended up quitting the birth control because the cure was worse than the disease! :) At this point, most of my symptoms are quite manageable with medical cannabis...as long as I can anticipate the onset and have access when I need it.

Ah, the human body. Good times!

Thank you thank you thank you @Meghan for beginning this thread! Really I cannot thank you enough... I was thinking of it but was a little scared of the reaction it might illicit... I was going to wait for awhile :)

I have THE most screwed up insides of anyone I know. My Dr's (I have lost count...) are now calling it. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. The latest thing I have been told by a specialist Gyno is that I have SEVERE Endo which likely got infected. This is infected to the point of 15 months of excruciating pain in my insides that I couldn't even think straight, two hospital visits with CT guided drains into the resulting abcesses, followed by a nine month wait for surgery, my stomach opened up and insides scraped out entirely with no guarantee that it wont come back

The original pain is gone but I am left in constant daily pain. Going to the bathroom of any kind is THE most painful exercise ever.... It's worse in the time between ovulation ending and period ending...I've taken so many drugs my head doesnt even work right any more and Cannabis is the only thing that I can use to effectively relieve the pain. Hemp drops are THE BEST! but of course we cannot get them here and they are expensive to import and take a while to get and there is every chance they will be seized...

Every time I bring Cannabis up with my Dr she gives me this look...

I agree with you about birth control..... My system has been screwy ever since I had the first implant put in. Although I know birth control could help I refuse to take it now...

anyway sorry that was a bit of a rant but it is a welcome sight to see someone who can relate and doesn't just say women problems.... its scary how little we know about BS "women's problems"!!

I'm so sorry to hear about your Endo, please share how you manage your pain with MMJ. A loved one has severe Endo and I'm trying to convince her that MMJ can bring some normality back into her life.

We live in a prohibitionist state so dispensary luxuries are not readily available but quality herb is abundant, unfortunately its mostly skunky hybrids... I rarely come across something that feels Indica dominant.

For most of the time I have simply just smoked. Vapourising just couldn't cut it for me until we discovered the cloud and the Lotus.

The thing that offers me the most pain relief is making oil from the already vaped material. Unfortunately I can go through the oil a lot faster than it can be produced. It produces a much "heavier" effect oil....

Indica dominant is obviously the best type and I am very lucky that I can source exactly what I want. The best med strain I have tried is called "The Doctor" lol. But any type can offer relief it just depends on the person. These really are experiments we have to do ourselves until the medical community completely comes to the party.

I would like to experiment with more edibles for longer pain control too. It really would depend on the persons feelings about trying MJ as to which road might be the best for them to start with....

My apologies for not replying to this thread earlier! I'm glad there is interest in this topic here (though sorry to hear about your pain--puts mine into perspective!)

I've never been a big fan of edibles (dosing is so difficult, and the only bad experiences I've ever had with cannabis has been consuming it), but I have found that Cheeba Chews (CBD and/or indica) are fairly effective for me. I'm lucky to live in a medical state where I have easy access to them.

Terrible cramps this morning, which I attacked with multiple dabs: Sour Tsunami, Pineapple Thai, Girl Scout Cookies. I'm really impressed by high CBD meds for cramping and abdominal pain specifically. There will be times when I'm in so much pain that it takes everything I have to physically uncurl myself and take a hit. But I know that if I can manage to do so, I'll find fast relief. It sure beats popping a pill that can take 45 minutes to kick in.

That's mostly what I expected to hear. She doesn't do well with edibles, bad past experiences. Maybe I'll get her to try some decarbed bud or oil - maybe reclaim.

How often must you dose for pain?
Whats your normal pain level? What does mmj bring it down to? Pain levels both before and after your surgery would be appreciated.

She is about to go through her second surgery to remove the lesions which have spread to all her nearby organs - she is in immense amounts of pain around the clock. I need to prove to her that mmj will help her manage the pain without any impact to her health unlike prescription pain killers. It would be a win if I got her to lower her dosage of painkillers in exchange for something natural. Sorry for all the questions, I'm just curious how you effectively use mmj to manage pain that occurs around the clock. I can PM you if you'd rather talk there.

I'm thinking an ABV tincture might give her the most relief - luckly I have well over an ounce of vaped bud saved up to try with.

I am the same. My only bad experience was with edibles. I couldn't even move to get out of the bed to get to the bathroom. I remember trying to call out to my OH (Other Half) but couldn't even figure out how to make my voice work. But after years more experience I think I could regulate a bit better now.

We tried making capsules, got this kit from somewhere and that seemed to work really well for pain when I was at my worst but I was having to take way more than we could keep up with making so gave it up... Cannabis isn't so easy to come by here...Well it is but not really good or what I would call 'medical' grade.

That's why I really like the Dixie Dew Drops (CBD drops) but alas also not easy to come by here. There is always the possibility it will be seized by customs. Customs dogs cant tell the diff between THC and Hemp.... such crap... We grow hemp in Australia but it isn't classified for human consumption!

Dabbing has been my saviour, so has the cloud. I was desperate to quite combustion after my surgery but the Da Buddah just couldnt' cut through the pain. We haven't smoked since getting the cloud and that is saying a lot for me. I find adding vaporising to dabing errls gives me the best all round pain management over the course of the day.

I always reach for the torch before I reach for the pills. If we could get enough Dixie Drops to medicate properly I would be off all these drugs completely. Right now though, I just dont think I can completely manage without taking horrible Tramadol (SR and Instant). I have done well though to kick endone and Oxy in the amounts I was taking. I thank Cannabis for the withdrawals being easier.

This is probably going to get icky cause I am not holding back :) just a warning lol :worms:

Personally for maximum pain relief I would go reclaim first or if you can get your hands on it a high CBD strain.

I dose regularly throughout the day for pain. First thing in the morning it will take three or four dabs before I can break through pain properly. Of course that depends on the time of the month and how bad a night it was and lets just call it "bathroom" activity lol

I usually begin the day with pain at least a 4 sometimes it can be as high as 8 and I am sobbing. My usual routine is to take two or three dabs in quick succession and then some Dixie Drops. Once thats all taking effect and I can feel the calm starting I will then take the pills... :bang: Dab some more then vaporise. I have pretty much been using Cannabis from morning till I pass out because I cant stay awake. I dont like to go to sleep as the pain is worse when I wake up. I know I'm not doing myself any favours and I am trying not to do this....

MMJ brings the pain down to a manageable level where I could maybe go to the store (if I have too) and go swimming. Which my Dr insists I do, and so do I but its a struggle... I cant really give you a number as it depends on where I have started from but I would estimate that I get 2/3's of my relief from MMJ and regularly tell my Dr to stick her drugs I will just keep mine! ;)

Before the surgery, my abdomen was completely full of infection. I had at least three abcesses and my insides had fused together from the infections. Prior to surgery my pain scale started at 10. I cant even put it into words... I would have been happy not to wake up seriously... a good day the pain would start at 10 bad day it might be 15. I was stuck waiting for surgery and nothing I could do. I hadnt even discovered dabbing etc then.... we only discovered all this after I got out of hospital!

Now, after surgery my pain scale starts at 1 but I am still in chronic pain. Also there is now added scar tissue from the surgery which could be causing more pain... It's likely I will need a full hysterectomy or at the very least a laporoscopy to clear scar tissue. I dont think I am ever going to be out of pain now.

Given you have it on hand, an ABV tincture could be ideal. I treat our ABV like gold. We did QWISO with ABV (three washes of 2 minutes I think). That is my ideal pain killer and we are working on ways to get ABV faster so I can have more.

I am happy to answer anything you want to know, right here. We keep this hidden and nobody benefits. We talk about it and maybe we all learn something. Maybe there is a partner here that sees something that will help his love... or someone else. After all the time in hospital and surgery and being told you are strange, you learn to let go of alot of the crap in your head. This is me and I am sick and I am struggling but I am fighting and trying to find a way to manage this the best I can.

I'll also mention that I have taken a truck load of opiates. They have messed with my brain so I am sorry if something doesn't make sense or goes off in a different direction. :ko:

Ah so glad I did a search first, was going to start a thread but wasn't brave enough :p. Since my other symptoms started 7 years ago my cycle went from light, easy, predictable to gift from Satan as I now refer to it. It would be a great plus if the MJ can help that too.

Reproductive issued run in the family lots of endometriosis, ovarian cysts, multiple types of cancer, infertility, miscarriage, etc... so if I can take pain and mood issues down a notch it would be awesome!

Ok i feel i have confirmation that even my little doses of MJ are a near miracle for cranky lady bits :)! Last cycle i thought it was a fluke but this time now that im vaping daily im sure its helped. Ive been hospitalized from cramps and ruptured cyst pains and even morphine didnt cut it and it had some very undesirable effects. At home i usually take 4 aleve a day plus max out on tylenol on top of that with a heating pad and i just plan to be worthless for at least 3 days. All that ends up doing is making my stomach even worse which makes everything else worse.

I took half of an aleve yesterday just as a safety net but i have needed any again yet. Came home and tried some GSC (im always more nauseous for 5 days around its arrival) thinking i was going to need some aleve with my next meal and nope im ok :). They arent gone but entirely tolerable with a heating pad and i was able to eat and so far keep down solids.

hey -- found, and just wanted to bump this thread. I really love menstruation (and talking about menstruation), despite experiencing severe cramping. I use cannabis medicinally to manage this, but don’t have MMJ access. The cramps have been pretty much a constant throughout my life, with the exception of a few intermittent spurts of inexplicable relief. I’ve also had periods where the cramps were beyond bad, but these days they are just regular bad. Lately, the worst of the pain seems to be in my sciatic nerve, as opposed to my abdomen, at least that's how it seems since I mostly feel it in my lower back and down both legs, but it wasn’t always this way. Depending on what I have going on for the first two days of bleeding, which is mainly when the cramps occur, I can use just cannabis (preferred) and it’s tolerable. If I can't spend these days buried in a nest resting and hydrating and medicating and eating frequently (I find it helps a lot if I make sure I don't get to the point of being empty/hungry, which I'm generally not great at), and I have to be out and about, then I take ibuprofen, which is fairly effective if I dose and re-dose before pain sets in, but doesn't work all that well otherwise... so I need to use kind of a lot of ibuprofen for it to work, and I'd rather not be taking it at all. The cramps had kind of peaked about five years ago, and were unmanageable with cannabis, and it got unpleasant to the point of being traumatic, mostly because of the repetition, and I was throwing up from the pain and writhing around on the bathroom floor yelping, and it was not good. After too many rounds of that I started taking ibuprofen, something I prefer to avoid, and got into a rhythm that was working, which very much surprised me, and with favorable conditions now I can sometimes go without it and be almost-ok. Even with a long history of fairly torturous cramps, I love menstruation and the whole nesty thing that accompanies it — I really resent when I have work and need to like leave the house etc during the first few days. I find my other symptoms -- weepiness, and some level of hopelessness, at times, prior to bleeding, and two days of extremely heavy bleeding -- to be semi-reasonable, but the cramps, not so much. Anyway this was recently recommended to me (it's a program by Katy Bowman) -- I haven't tried it yet but figured I'd share it.

I'm not sure how to read your response, being that this is electronic communication and all, but I'm feeling like it's kind of a big deal to suggest to someone on a forum that they must be sick, based on an experience they are having of their body that is within the realm of normal for that person. I have always had bad cramps. I had them when I was 13. I briefly described their peak, which was dramatic, but that was a discrete period of time, and I was grieving at that time, which is tangential to what I was trying to express about my history of cramps. Before and since, it's been manageable/less arduous, and cramps not being relieved by OTC pain meds is supposedly a good barometer for concern about an underlying physiological condition, and mine are relieved. I had to urge healthcare providers to dig into it a little bit, none have ever batted an eyelash about it (western/eastern/alternative).

That being said, I may agree with you (though I did feel like getting through the pain when it was at it's worst was mentally strengthening, if nothing else, but it was too draining to continue each cycle, which is why I succumbed to the ibuprofen regime). I just started exploring whether something in my diet, or lacking from my diet, is causing/exacerbating cramps. Actually it occurs to me that the reason they are manageable now, but were much worse a few years ago, could be connected to dietary changes since then e.g. I stopped eating soy. I very recently cut wheat from my diet (for other reasons, but that is when it occurred to me that something dietary could be causing these cramps I’ve been experiencing for all these years, and if so that will be unearthed by a process of cutting foods — I am going to stop talking about this now because I get actively annoyed by others talking constantly about food sensitivities and what they no longer eat and being smug about it, apparently we can’t drive hybrid cars and not be smug, and I am hoping I can not eat wheat and not be smug).

Anyway, no hard feelings, just wanted to express my reaction. As I said, I like talking about this stuff, and any potentially elevating discussions. I’m sensitized to this by having had people who don’t share my experience of cramps assert that the cramps are my fault, because of something I'm doing/not doing, which I resent. Plenty of people who do not have healthy lifestyles are free of cramps. If one does have cramps, it does not necessarily follow that they are unhealthy or at fault. Also, I grew up consuming a mostly-Americanized diet, and taking care of myself was not something I was taught or shown how to do, so it has been a long process of determining optimal, or even adequate nutrition for myself — I think I was 12 when I stopped eating meat, and then I was a "junkfood vegetarian" for a lot of years because I didn’t know better than this, and I’ve since been adapting/refining how I eat (and exercise), which continues to change/evolve with experience (and realizing that negative effects of combustion were impacting me, and that I could get the desired effects of cannabis without it, was another such recent lifestyle shift). I am also definitely intrigued by the idea that alignment may play a significant role w/r/t cramps (see links in my first post). The difficulty of figuring this all out is of course compounded by the rampant misinformation and corruption of our food supply/culture. I just recently determined how to adequately feed my cat as well, and it involved wading though a lot of misinformation, and criminally inadequate/harmful commercial pet food IMO.

EDIT: Oh and I came across this -- it breaks down factors that could be connected to primary dysmenorrhea cramps (not secondary), and I really like the author's bio (I kind of presumed smugness, as I tend to do with all things paleo, but then I read the bio, and stand corrected).

Catbird, have you gone to a chiropractor? When I started having my period years ago I had terrible cramps. As I got older late teens it was better. But in my early 20s I started having problems in the low back. It got worse with pain down my leg. I went to a chiropractor, that's where a doctor can't help unless you need surgery or a cortisone shot. Only a chiropractor helped me get better.

Im sure I'm a lot older than you. But now I have degenerative disc decease and spinal stenosis. I use cannabis for that, as well as arthritis in other areas. My problems started out at an early age. Not that this is something that you have.

The cramping could be natural for you, and get less as you get older. The Doctors can do Uterine Ablation. I don't know if that would be for you, just a thought. You might look into that. Have you seen a naturopath? Good luck and I hope you find relief from your pain

Seeing a chiropractor is a good suggestion -- I haven't tried it, but I'd like to. I do go to acupuncture, but not especially frequently, and it's great. Uterine/Endometrial Ablation (I just looked it up) is not something I'd consider/have cause to consider. I am exploring holistic ways that I can lessen the cramps, like with optimizing lifestyle things, and working with my body, not against it/by altering it (I have no medical cause to do such a drastic thing!). If the dietary changes lessen the cramps, great, if not, also fine, I can live with the pain and the bleeding. I don't go to a naturopath, I go to Midwives for WWC (and avoid Western doctors if I can, though perhaps an allergy specialist would be beneficial to consult with, I've never had one of those tests), but there is a naturopathic practitioner that I've been wanting to see (for wellness, and to have as a point of contact if needed, not specifically for cramps) just haven't gotten it together to throw down for the in-depth initial consult -- I should probably stop buying vaporizers :/ Anyway, I wasn't specifically seeking medical advice, just wanting to contribute to this thread about menstruation and MMJ and share my experience, but I appreciate that people want to be helpful. Sorry about your DDD/spinal stenosis/back pain. Do you think there is a link with this and your lower back problems that began in your 20s? [EDIT: oops, you already mentioned that they were linked]. Does cannabis alleviate your pain? My mom has had (painful) herniated discs, as well as arthritis, and we have some of the same structural issues with our bodies, (though her issues have always been more severe than mine), so it's important that I do preventative things while I'm young(ish).

EDIT: It sounds like the back pain you experienced in your 20s was just general pain, not associated with menstruation, but that there is a link for you between this and the painful periods that you experienced before... do I have that right?

The painful periods and the low back pain are 2 separate issues in my case. I try to stay active, am looking to find the right cannabis that works for my pain. I know we all are different. Just started visiting the dispensaries so still in the trial and error stage. I know it lessens my anxiety and the pain isn't quite as intense when using cannabis. There is some cannabis can make a person too anxious.

Sometimes written words without vocal inflection are hard to interpret on message boards. You don't know me and i don't know you. If you were born and raised in Bklyn, you might sound a bit like me though;) I wasn't suggesting that you were unhealthy. Sorry you read it that way.

Got it. Nice that you're "in the land of legal herb," and can readily explore various strains via dispensaries -- I hope you find ones that work for you. I wish my mom and grandma were in a state where they could use MMJ for back issues and such, though I'm not sure that they would, but I am sure that we'd get along better.

Yay a fellow Brooklynite. My Brooklyn accent is latent. It comes out often enough, though. My parents are from Brooklyn, but raised us in Manhattan, and my Brooklyn accent as a small child was quite strong, but faded when I started going to school all day. Anyway, it's okay, as I said, there's a sensitivity there. I appreciate that that's not what you meant, and probably should have been able to read it as you being empathic versus judgmental or whatever.
