2nd QWISO Attempt with ABV

OK Been reading a lot and spending a lot of time on Youtube and the 2nd attempt has gone a lot better than the first.

I'll try and be thorough with my method.

List. (usual shit)

Around a 1/4 of decent bud turned into ABV
99% ISO (ebay)
Unbleached Coffee Filters
Small metal sieve
Jam jar + Lid
Pyrex plate
Pyrex jug.

Method

Freeze ISO & ABV for about 3-4 hours (I crushed up the ABV pestle and mortar style at the two hours mark.)

EDIT: Don't crush the weed!

ABV & ISO in jar with lid on

Swirl for 1 Minute with 5 second shakes every 15 seconds or so.

Dump contents into sieve on top of Pyrex jug with a coffee filter covering the top.

(I need to use a finer sieve or grind my ABV less as about a quarter//fifth of the material made in through into the filter)

I let that drain for about five minutes and then poured the mixture onto the pyrex plate

(The bits you can see are actually on the underside of the plate)

I put that in a warm room with a 12" fan on low pointing at it. (I also turned the lights off, not that I think that should make any difference at all) It looked like this after about 2 hours.

About four/five hours later the ISO had evaporated and once scraped up it looked like this.

Only thing I forgot is some grease proof paper so had to use some metal foil. It's actually got a lovely rich honey brown colour and smells really hash-y.

It's a bit early in the evening to test it yet but I'll post back when I do.

EDIT: Gonna leave it til tomorrow to evap some more.

Thanks,

It certainly looks like oil and did get me very stoned.

Now I'm happy with the process I'm going to ramp it up and try and make a decent amount with my next try.

So, you actually vaped this hash right? It worked good?

looks like a solid ABV run. i would suggest using ethanol/everclear next time instead of ISO (if u can get EC that is). your return will taste WAY better. only dif is that it will take a longer wash.

ive got some ABV to run also. i may have to do it this weekend.

Interesting. How much is needed to do a decent run?

No. For some reason I cannot get the settings right on my DBV to vape solids. I just rolled in a load of kief to stabilise it and made rattails to add to my joints.

The taste had a strong resiny flavour to it and you certainly noticed it on the back of your throat; not harsh per se but sort of ohhh this has got a kick to it.

No sore throat at all after smoking all of it.

@2clicker

Is the ethanol extraction much different? Im based in the Uk and I don't know what the score with ethanol is over here, I've just checked ebay and bio-ethanol 98% pure is easily available.

I have just ordered some 99.9% ISO which is what I'll be making the next batch with.

its the same as an ISO run. just replace ISO with ethanol and do a longer wash (3 mins). check out the skunkpharm tech on making QWET. http://skunkpharmresearch.com/qwet-extraction/

i do 7g sized runs. just did one the other day in fact and got .8g from only the first wash. i have not done the second run yet. after inspecting the flowers closely i found lots of trichs left. i expect to get at least another .5g out of it. and this is with some outdoor. top shelf would yield a higher return.

what you are looking for is 190 proof grain alcohol. im not sure what is different about "bio-ethanol" if at all, but it may not be good idea. if you check out the QWET thread you will find others have posted links to different places to get 190proof grain alcohol. i can get 190p everclear at any local liquor store so ive never needed to buy online.

in my experience with ISO... my returns always had an "ISO taste" to them. just a slight "chem" taste. then i tried SPs tech on QWET extraction and never looked back.

I stopped at two liquor stores yesterday, neither one had any grain.

Doing a test run with QWISO + unvaped material. Trying to keep everything froze while extracting. See how it tastes.

Ok I've just made a batch using 7 G's of some rather nice bud I had lying around.

I've changed the method slightly, I now freeze a couple of litres of water with an extremely high salt content and then sit the jam jar with the weed in it in a saucepan with the ice salt water to keep everything as cold as possible while the 'science' is happening.

Everything else has also been frozen.

Same as before but I stir the weed in the jar for a 30 sec wash before decanting into large jar to filter through.

Repeat x 4 and separate the 1 & 2 and the 3 & 4 batches into two.

This is batch 1

And Batch 2

They're sitting in a dark room covered with some cheese cloth with a fan blowing on them.

I'll let you guys know the result and yield tomorrow.

The weed still looks pretty good so I'm going to let that evaporate and see if anything can be done with it, suggestions are welcome!

Don't worry, it's well ventilated and the door is closed.

My biggest worry is the cats getting into the room and fucking things up. Having to wash ISO off cats would not be cool.

So, this morning things looked like this.

Very, very pleased with Dish 1.

pyv0.jpg

Dish 2 still needs to evap quite a bit more.

E2A:

3 hours later Dish 2 is coming along nicely (it wasn't quite in the path of the fan air so I moved it)

scwp.jpg

Dish 1 is pretty much the same as before.

I'm gonna wait the full 24 hours (8 Pm) before I start thinking about scraping.

OK Dish 1 is ready, Dish 2 is still a little moist so I'm gonna leave it another 24 hours.

After scraping this is what I got.

0.5 G of ???

50% is like hard sugar candy, 50% is a little softer

Now, does anyone know what I've actually just made, is it Shatter? Wax? Honey Oil?

that is shatter. warm it and it will slowly melt into a clear amber pile/piece. from there is should harden enough to handle it and will break off into small shards and chunks.

yep. looks good from here.

and yeah im sure its stable to handle the way it is, but because it was scraped up with a razor and is still in that white flakey state it will be harder to handle than if it were a solid piece. trying to handle the flakey stuff will result in small bits of it all over your fingers. even static electricity can cause it to get everywhere.

Quality looks good. If you fuck up QWISO (let it soak too long) the resulting oil will be green tinted. Also is .5g all you got from a 7g run? I don't run QWISO w/ fresh nugs, but for BHO, you can typically expect at least 10% yield from a nug run (often closer to 20%). That said, if you still have the weed I would do a second run on it.

And a note on purging: if the oil has a harsh/chemical taste, you may need to add some heat into the purge.

Yeah it's got a bit harder but super sticky still, I'll put it on my heated 3d printer bed to stabilise.

I still have another dish to go from my second run which I'm leaving til tomorrow to scrape. I also would be unimpressed with 0.5 from 7.

Ok Dish 2 is done and has been combined with Dish 1

1l87.jpg

Almost completely melted into one big glob. (5 mins @ 80C)

7mhn.jpg

After cooling for a couple of hours naturally and then freezing for an hour or two (its still bloody sticky but will snap when bent)

1uik.jpg

All in all I think I got about 1.2-1.3 G.

Since the weed still smells pretty good I think I will do 6 runs next time.

thanks for all the info and help guys!

Good to see the 2nd run turned out well. Not sure if you made a typo, but doing more than 3 runs is a waste of time IMO. I consider ~25% of dry flower weight to be the maximum potential yield you can get from exceptional bud. With 1.3g you're already past 75% of the max yield- a third run might get you up to 85% (an additional .18g). After that, your returns will be miniscule.

Slothing around
Not worth making my own thread for this, so I'll just use this one :)

I made my first attempt at QWISO today using just 0.5g of abv to test the method. I read about water curing the buds for around a week to get all the water solubles (chlorophyll) out of the bud, but I figured I could speed up the process to a few minutes by using boiling water (effectively making tea lol), since the cannabinoids are safe in 100C water, if anything it would decarboxylate it a bit. I let the abv brew for a few minutes then replaced the water, the second time the water remained pretty much clear, so it definitely seemed to work. The ISO from the extraction also looked pretty good, but I fucked up the method a bit and got a few bits of abv in the tray, then had to rinse out the little bottle I used with water because it stuck to the sides. I ended up with a little ball of dark squidgy hash, haven't tested yet, but I'm pretty sure it's because I fucked up the method.

So, anyone heard of tea curing or heat curing instead of water curing before? Does it sound plausible to people?

i never mess with water curing ABV before running it. the oil created from an ABV extraction is already less than a full spectrum so why worry about it?

if you really wanna clean up abv oil then winterize it. water curing is a mess and a total PITA IMO.
