Totally know what you mean. I suspect it's the "carry-over" heat, like an oven that keeps heating when it's turned off and the food is taken out. There's still heat in the chamber, and even though it's no longer actively heating, you're still getting deep vapor as the hot air is pulled over the material. Your perception that the bulk of vapor seems to come after you release the button is the same as mine. In fact, if you feel vapor in your lungs, and you haven't let off the button yet...that's when I get massive hits that are really too large and ultimately wasteful. Lesson for me: release the button before I feel like I'm getting too much vapor, and then keep drawing.

Yeah, it's a pretty amazing little piece of vape-manship.
mckeen, thanks for warning the rest of us not to clean the gasket with alcohol. haha that's funny you unboxed it for one last go.

Lol, been sick and havn't been able to get to the FedX drop off. Sarah C. from Firefly just called wondering where the Firefly was cause she was wanting to send the new one. What a sweet heart she is. Have fun with your new toy, it's my favorite so far. I think the competition has got some catching up to do.

Only conduction vaporizers work better when you pack the chamber and most don't anyway because nowadays most conduction vaporizers are actually a mix of mainly conduction and radiation and a bit of convection.

The Firefly is a convection unit, as such it needs proper airflow and it needs the airflow to go through the entire bowl at the same rate ideally, for the hot air to properly vaporize.

To properly use a convection unit, with on demand power, you don't need to preheat the bowl because it is the hot air that vaporizes the herbs. To me that is a waste of precious battery power.

What you need to do is to start your inhalation very slowly while you press the button. Maintain a slow draw until you feel the vapour in your throat, after that you need to gauge if you need to release the button at times to maintain the temp because if you keep pressing, it keeps heating until it goes to combustion territory.

You can also increase your draw speed at this point if you wish to maintain the button pressed, because higher draw speed lowers the temperature.

To maximize battery life though, i suggest keeping air speed low and only slightly increasing it in the end of the hit, and continue after you release the button for a few seconds.

The way of using the Firefly is pretty close to the FlashVape S2, the Vaporgenie and the Lotus. All of them are heat-on-demand convection only vaporizers.

If you combust all the time there can only be a few reasons:

1. Overpacking
2. Draw too slow
3. Keeping the heat on too long
4. A combination of the above

If the heating element was malfunctioning and heated too fast, you just needed to ajust the draw or press the button intermitently.
If the glass was cracked, it would be visible.

Going back on the magnetic lid. I can see for a cause of concern there. I'm not sure how strong the magnetic lid is, but I can only see it affecting credit cards and electronic devices if the lid is off by itself.

You know I thought that too, was buy the #5 and #6 tool and left my wallet on the table with the credit card next to it. Then stupidly, I placed the lid on top of my wallet. My main credit card is just fine. My Veterans card still works too. I don't know, it's been sitting next to my MacBook Pro since I got it, no issues so far. I'm thinking they did some R & D on this issue and found no problems or they would have made some adjustments. Magnets are very strong. I think there are two of them embeded in the metal.

If I had a Volcano in front of me (which I do) and the Firefly in front of me (which I do) and I had to make a choice. I would pick the Firefly every single time over the Volcano. Don't get me wrong I still love my Volcano for all that it is but for me the Firefly is a far more pleasurable experience and that is no bull shiz. I am having a hard time even looking at my loyal MFLB. It is sad, very, sad.

On the other hand if I had a friend over the Volcano would have the win.

Thats really interesting. I am wondering

Thank you! I realized that preheat is not necessary. What a waste of battery. Now I just push the button, wait 1-2 seconds and then start a steady draw. Works like magic

I wasn´t expecting this, but I have to agree.

Um, yeah, some of us have been saying this for two weeks and 20 pages now.

As for compacting the bowl leading to combustion....I haven't seen anything like this so far. The only effect a more densely-packed bowl has, in my experience, is it requires a deeper hit to get the same level of vapor. (and oh yeah, it keeps the device much neater.) Otherwise I've personally seen no inclination towards combustion.

And a blanket rule that "convection vapes don't like material that is compacted"...I totally disagree. Several years with the V Tower Xtreme, and a few thousand "elbow packs", say otherwise.

I didn't say that and certainly not as a "blanket rule", but if you want a more even roasting you shouldn't compact your herb and you don't need to in a convection vaporizer. you could do this if you need it to raise the temperature in the bowl, near the end of the session.

You can get a more thick hit by compacting in a convection vaporizer, but you will get a worse flavour profile and extraction than if you didn't compact it.

See, that's what I mean by "blanket rule". You just stated that as if it were true for all convection vapes, which it isn't.

Have you used the FF yet, or are you just speaking generically?

It is true for all convection vaporizers because it's a function of airflow.

I'm speaking generally and i don't have the Firefly.

No, "taste" is a subjective measure and not a function of airflow. I find compacted hits in the V Tower (a classic form of convection, you'll agree) to taste great, and often better than loosely packed material placed in the cyclone bowl of the same device. Further, extraction is *way* more complete and thorough using densely-packed elbow bowls in the V Tower, in my experience.

But this is a FF thread, so back on subject: it's an amazing, but tricky, device. You should use it before giving usage advice. You might find your preconceptions about how it works aren't entirely accurate.

Let's all just agree that there are a lot of variables to combustion. Today I decided to pack the bowl for the first and only time with a little pressure in the FF and on my second draw BLAMMO — combustion.

Yeah I agree it's an elusive problem, and that is pretty weird that this happened to you. I was trying to replicate it this afternoon...like held the crap out of the button while drawing on a packed bowl. Not even close to combustion. You aren't using a top screen, are you?

(btw on my first, likely-faulty unit, the times it combusted were usually on looser-packed bowls, but I still think it was malfunction and not related to anything else I was doing.)

Maybe some units are not accurately calibrated and they overheat?

There appear to have been a handful of malfunctioning units, like my first one. I think the FF folks told someone here that 10 or 11 out of over 2000 had "warranty issues". (Not sure how many of those had heating issues.)

Additionally, however, it seems like folks with correctly-functioning units are achieving combustion inadvertently, on rare occasions. (Sounds like biz as usual in the vape world!)

I'm still climbing te learning curve. Day 2. Had combustion last night in a well baked bowl. I had just stirred and tamped it down. Went for a long hit and poof!

Still not getting the hits I'd hope for. Seems like most hits produce tiny clouds or nothing at all.

I'm sure there's success for me around the corner.

Do you have access to different strains/quality? Different material will vape differently, so if you are not having success with one strain maybe try another?

Excellent point. I have a few things that don't perform as well as others, subjectively anyway.
Push the button and when the glow is orange start taking your draw. If you feel a lot of pull and resistance you are drawing to hard. Mid-way through you can release the button but continue to draw to finish it off.

And one thing you can try, if that doesn't work, is add a couple seconds to that pre-count. You see the orange glow...now count to three and then draw. A longer pre-count can have a pretty big effect on the amount of vapor you pull. (Also try holding the button longer while drawing, but this is where you need to be careful, especially early in the session.)

You will get it, and enjoy yourself trying! :D

Yoooooooo this shit still hasn't arrive. Just realized that fedex home delivery doesn't run on Monday (bummmmmmer) and everything stops at 6 tomorrow. Tracking still says Thursday but instead of staying home for another week (lol I'm a commission only "sales guy") I called fedex and am having it it delivered to the local fed ex store. Man I'm really hoping to get it tomorrow but not counting on it . There is no delivery on Wednesday. South Florida IS far as h*ck from Las Vegas...so whateves......

ON THE POSITIVE SIDE OF THINGS: I've learned a lot from this thread while waiting!

Seriously to see well-seasoned vets of this site saying FF > volcano makes me know without a slim shadow of a doubt that I made the right choice and the FF is here to stay. ;)

Long time lurker, first time poster. My previous vape credentials are an 8 year old Volcano Classic, used heavily daily and still going strong, a Plenty, and 2 MFLBs for travel.

I fell in love with the Firefly marketing and splurged for it after a few too many Volcano bags one night. I ordered the red, and the extra battery and charger kit.

I've had my cherry red Firefly for a week now, and just took it on a short trip.

The Vapor
Awesome. By varying technique you can get whatever type of vapor your heart desires. It seems to be very efficient and extracts impressively. I hold the button down, wait for orange glow and start slow long draw, letting off the button about half way through.

The Unit / Build Quality
This thing is a Cadillac and will turn heads wherever it goes. The fit and assembly are excellent. It's heavy in the hand. The magnetic lid snaps shut strong and authoritatively. Ergonomically it leaves a little to be desired for.

Using the Thing
I'm filling the chamber just up to the rim with loose medium grind material and stir occasionally with a toothpick. I do wish I could shake it like the MFLB but the chamber is just too small on this. I find that material gets stuck to the porthole on top and it seems this will require more frequent cleaning. If I was planning on using this for all my vaping needs, I think keeping it clean and tidy might get old fast.

Battery Life
Excellent. No complaints. Although the bar was really low for me after using peeled re-chargable AAs in the MFLB. I really like the perfect fit of the battery. It's a shame you can't use it tethered to the power adapter. That disqualifies this as a traveling party piece.

Customer Service
They were obviously a little overwhelmed, and I was disappointed when my pre-order hadn't shipped and yet they had units that were shipping out. I got a reply within a few days by email that they had run out and my order was shipping soon, and it did and then arrived quickly. I've now been waiting a week (albeit with holiday time in there) to find out where the accessories I paid for are... and have gotten no reply for a week, which is a little disappointing given the accolades by others in this thread.

Bottom Line
This is a very nice and capable portable vaporizer, that to me is everything I wished the MFLB would become. This will definitely replace the MFLB as my go to travel piece and supplement the Volcano occasionally. The product design is beautiful, and the construction seems built to last.

Would I Buy It Again?
In a heartbeat. Just wish they'd send or acknowledge my missing battery and external charger.

FYI - They plan to ship these out early January. I wonder why they are not responding to you?? Did you check your Spam/Junk folder? I have received replies within 24 hours each time I have reached out.

Yep, have been monitoring spam and did communicate with them before. Would have been nice to know about the charger delay at that time, but oh well
