Driving behind speeding drivers to avoid ticket...does it work?

FukCombustion

I usually driver over the speed limit on the highway (unless I have bud) and I'm not sure if my logic is flawed that driving 500 feet behind another speeding car(s) will reduce the probability of getting a speeding ticket, because the cars in front of you will be pulled over first.

Is that bull shit or not?

You need to keep the car just out of your sight for this to work, really even better if you can't really see them. Cops have been known to pull over multipule vehicles at once. Speeding is a gamble no matter what though. But 500 feet is too close still.

I think the chances of a police officer pulling you over are lower if you are behind a speeding driver, but I don't think that's a reliable method of avoiding getting a ticket, especially if you are in lockstep with the driver in front of you. A lot of people think that a police officer can only pull over one car at a time, but that's not really the case; they will pull over groups of vehicles as well, especially for group speeding.

ROFL, if its just one cop then Im not stopping if someone else is already pulling over. If the cop doesnt pull over and keeps coming, then thats a different story. You can only win or come out even in this situation.

OP: Just get a radar detector and don't drive like a douche. My car makes well over 400hp and I havent gotten a ticket in over 4 years... and its not because I dont speed.

Being at the back of a fast moving pack is easy pickins for a ticket. The cop isn't going to race to the front of the speeding cars, he's just going to pull over the car in the back that's speeding.
I think the theory behind this thread title is this: The cop is going to be using a radar gun, and he is going to aim it at the vehicle in front, Am I right?

Yes and who cares. If he sees you going as fast as the car he was tracking why does it matter?

Doesn't matter who's car is getting tagged with radar or laser if you have a good detector. It can let you know pretty far in advance too.

My face is melting...
This doesn't sound very scientific.

By my logic, in the time it takes the cop to pull out in traffic or pull a U-turn, he's going to be right on your ass. But I don't have any statistics to back up my hypothesis.

Lucky for me, my car tops out at about 60mph (not really, but it is a putt-putt toy).

i agree with syrupy, if its a group of cars your likely to get picked off if your in the back. I'd invest in a valentine, don't bother with cheap radar detectors.

Dude, you guys dont even have roads to drive on for part of the year. Cant you just drive basically anywhere you want once it gets covered in snow?

I can see clearly now the smoke is gone...
Your eyes are your greatest defense against a speeding ticket.

That and common sense.

I find that if I am speeding, I prefer to be head of the pack, and make sure the ones speeding behind me are going the same speed. Alot of cops I have known and talked to over the years have all without exception said they go for the first one they can get.

Of course with my new motorcycle(GSXR 600) with its custom exhaust is quite the cop whistle, so I usually play it safe(at least around the known speed traps).

our police force us so small you never see police posted to catch speeders. And yea & no, your technically supposed to stay on roads, but a lot of people with rigged up jeeps freestyle that shit. That being said I no longer live in Iceland so dont quote me on it. :p

I was driving on the highway and a cop was pulled over giving a ticket. He didn't like the fact that I didn't merge alllllllllll the way into the fast lane as is the law here. I did a slide was half way there and he was way down in the ditch anyhow. He gave the ticket fast and caught me well over a mile later at the next exit. I was sooooooooooooooooooooooooo mad. I didn't get a ticket but I wanted to punch him in the face. I got a written warning for doing nothing wrong.

Hey I'll take a warning over a ticket.
I just try not to be the fastest on the road.
I usually drive 10 to 15 above the posted limit, but I95 in Jersey has this 35 mph
limit in construction zones with no one working and everyone is doing 70!? WTF

Mass drop has had three radar detectors and they never seem to really end up with a drop so no big deal. I still want a great price on the scs large or jumbo but massdrop never seems to save enough to make it worth it.

I am who I am and your approval isn't needed!
Keep up the speeding & tailgating folks ! Shit happens in a split second and the human brain needs time to react (approximately up to 1.5 seconds under optimal concentration/attention) to avoid catastrophes, and then you still are taxed to avoid the presented situation !

I speak from experience twice in my life time being on the receiving end..... The 1st I was lucky (and young), the second not so much and left permanently disabled and the person at fault extremely poorer. I may now be financially set til the end of this life, but I'd trade it all back for the opportunity to be whole and worthwhile again !

Just think.... It could be YOU in these shoes (either), that becomes damaged or dead, in the poor house and/or distraught at taking a life (accidentally or not) for the sake of arriving a tiny bit earlier than you would have driving normally and within the law.

Leave earlier, relax and enjoy your ability to travel, and most importantly.... BE SAFE ! so that the word tomorrow isnt just another word in the dictionary.

Just sayin :myday:
