Update - so i am still hackin' away at the rocksmith.
also doing the L&M program which is also teaching me to read music. this may slow me down in some ways, but all i got is time, and the more i know, the better i can play, right?

I just finished the 'first and second string notes' lesson. I know BCDEFG with open notes and 1st and 3rd fret and i'm practicing Ode to Joy and Jingle Bells. i can play both while reading the letters i put next to the notes on the paper ('supposed to do so), but i can't do it smooth while just reading the music. that's my practice for the next week. wish me luck and keep practicing out there!

I luckily landed on a good tutorial vid on youtube that has a lot of good info for learning proper playing habits. I also found if you are to be singing lyrics, it's good to try to sing along as you learn to play the notes it eases that transition of adding words later, getting the rhythm and timing right or so I found. Also if you can just sing the notes you are trying to play while you play them, it will help you connect better with the music. It doesn't have to sound good or be spot on, just connecting the voice with the action of playing the notes helps connect the mind/body/instrument. Little tips I've learned along the way

nice! yea, i've found myself singing the notes when i am plucking at the practice stuff and the words when i know them (jingle bells and the easy version of three little birds only so far) i know the music to 'ode to joy' so i just sing, "e,e,f,g, g,f,e,d, c,c,d,e e,d,d", etc. thanks for the tip and encouragement. i am looking to find a cheap 3/4 size bass for the wife, she has smaller hands than i do, and way less time to play. but it'd be nice to play rocksmith together.

got the new RS in the mail today! i love pre-order w/ amazon. i get it at my door by 11am on day of release and i don't have to leave my house.

am really diggin' it. the menus/controls/lessons/games, etc... all of it is so much better. it cost me 7.51 to import my old music (well worth it). Dawn of the Chordead is now a 1st person shooter. camera is auto controlled. so much fun. my first small blisters finally rose to the surface and peeled away painlessly (hooray!). it is a bit of data overload compared to plunkin' away w/ the video and book up on my screen. i have to take breaks every half hour or so, compared to a normal game, where i can easily go multiple hours before stopping. it's gonna be harder to go and do my "chore work" but i am determined to widen my learning and practice lots. i am pretty much done w/ 1st and 2nd string exercises and am ready to move up to the 3rd and 4th. in a few days

What are you on console or PC? I'm not buying this one on PC because of uplay DRM. They lost my sale, now I'll just pirate it instead and continue to support DLC on the one I bought without the DRM. I don't even feel bad about it, makes it damn near unusable sometimes.

I can't wait to download it and play it DRM free, just wish they released it without that BS like they did the first game.

Ahhh no Uplay to deal with. Checked the forums and they are having major issues on the PC release due to the uplay DRM Just glad I didn't buy this before noticing that. Ironically the pirate version will run better.

Lucky. Last uplay game I had deleted itself from my account and customer service didn't believe that i owned it. I argued until I just gave up. To this day I still have not tried far cry 3 because I'm sobitter that they stole it from me after owning it legally. Last time they get my money

I really want to buy this game How is it? I'm really fighting to control myself. I just know if I pay $50 or $60 for the game and run into more uplay issues preventing me from using it I'll lose my mind.

Got this finally. Haven't had much time to try it out, but the version I got came with all the DLC. Should keep me busy for quite some time. I'm basically starting from scratch. Don't know/remember much of anything.

So I just picked up Rocksmith 2014 and a Peavey Raptor Plus Exp, at the recommendation of my friend. So far I am really liking the way this game is working. I almost don't want to call it a game. It seems as though it is going to be a great way to learn the guitar. I have just started, but I will keep everyone up to date on my progress. I will try to post some pics of the guitar soon as well. Great morning to wake and bake with the sub and practice some guitar! Rambling some, already did the bake part!

i am up to 3rd and 4th string exercises so i now know the open D - G on the low E (third fret); this means i can read musical notation up and down the entire stave (new word) in the key of 'C'! they have me playing 'yankee doodle', 'when the saints', 'love me tender', 'amazing grace, and 'i wish you a merry christmas'.

again, i can't read and play with any speed or rhythm (especially the last 3), but i can do ok with the notes written down. really trying to not rush and get this stuff down clear in my mind. it's like multiplication tables, kinda.

still playin' the RS for sure. tbh i feel like i am at the point where figuring out the fingers isn't as hard as strumming as fast as they want me too. gotta look up some exercises for increasing my strumming speed. any suggestions?

i really do like practicing right before bed. it guarantees i have dreams of playing and reading music so i feel like i'm getting twice the practice (less mental rest, tho, naps are good). i have little external barometer as to the speed of my general progression. wifey says i'm doin' well and progressing fairly quickly (but what else would such a loverly lady say?)

also, i found an interesting series on the Noisey channel called guitar moves. watched about half of them. enjoyed all so far. here's one

ok, i decided to slow down on the RS and do the rhythm guitar path for awhile first. lots of players seem to recommend learning rhythm or even bass first. (can see why you picked up the bass, @jambandphan03 )

am almost done w/ 3th & 4th string work. should be on to the last two by monday or so!

finished those guitar moves vids. one of the best lines comes in at 4:20 of the second episode. here.

have been using my cannabis balm for my hands, wrists and forearms when i over-exert.

I don't know how it will be starting on bass first, but I find it to be a back seat ride compared to playing bluegrass guitar rhythms. It will help with time keeping and understanding the songs, as a precursor to playing guitar. I'm coming from the other direction having started with guitar, and I am finding my learning curve to be much shorter with the bass having playing guitar already under my belt. I do need a ton of practice still, but I am picking up the moves pretty fast and muscle memory is starting to set in. I am bonding very naturally with bass and may stick to it for a while. As long as there is a guitar in my hands...

Here's a little gem for ya. We've been learning ZZ top music so I ran across this in my searching. I guess I should go watch that entire series. Wish I could hang with these boys...
