2 piece vs. 4 piece Grinder

4 piece SCS, it's a tank. I don't have a Kief box, which is another reason but I also love the freezer/coin trick that you can do with a 4 piece grinder to build up the kief.
What is this freezer-coin trick?

I bought the 2 piece from the ssv site so I can't say for the 4 piece but the 2 piece grinds basically the same as a space case. I like the 2 piece so much I'll be getting a 4 piece 4 inch pretty soon

I got a 2" 4 pc Chromium Crusher second hand when I first started vaping in April/March. I am still under-educated, but I like it. It gets material plenty fine, it does a couple days worth in one go, and it's not too terribly conspicuous. I also like the bonus keif. The four piece design is something I think I will stick with if I ever upgrade to something 'nicer'. My DaVinci was supposed to come with a free one, but it turns out the free one was a 'free offer' after the fact and the shipping for the 1.5" four piece grinder was around $18, so I never followed through.

You can either toss a coin in with your herb and shake for more kief, or toss a coin in and freeze the herb prior to shaking, to facilitate the crystals falling off. I prefer not to freeze, as it can sometimes cause it to dry out and become harsh if you leave it in too long.

well when you say harsh what kind of vape do you use when you do that.

I'm not following you... If you are suggesting its the vape making it harsh, it's not. Any herb left in a freezer for too long will dry out. And herb that gets too dry oftentimes becomes harsh tasting, and loses its flavour, unless it's vacuum sealed. Even then I'd rather not use a freezer to store herb.

I'm wondering what strain you guys have that's so potent you don't have any issues reducing its effectiveness as such before vaping it...

If I can collect keif that comes off while grinding, great... but I don't typically go out of my way to actively remove it from the bud

I used to wonder the same thing, and then I tried it...I found as long as I didn't overdo it, I got a little extra kief in the collector without any noticeable difference. I suppose your mileage may vary if you are already using low grade materials with few crystals to begin with.

I don't do it often, but it's fun once in awhile if you enjoy vaping kief.

High grade (low plant matter and from top shelf bud) keif is about $15/g here @ the MMJ collectives. Cheap enough that I've never really looked into seriously collecting it myself. Good point though.

Oh yes and the four piece I got is divine. I prefer it over the two piece medium by a lot.

What is it you prefer about your large 4 piece over the medium 2 piece? Does the large produce a different consistency to the medium if held upside down to grind?

Cheers

If held upside down no but used regular it is very different. It come as out way fluffier. Even if I only turn the two piece a few turns it still isn't as fluffy as the herb is still grinding on itself. With the four piece the herb falls right through so it stays fluffy. I didn't even see the stem bits that I would see with other four pieces or even the two piece scs. The best thing is that it is way smoother then the two piece again because the herb falls through. I few turns and it is done. I am thrilled with the four piece. I wish there was a size in between large and jumbo but there isn't so this will do lol.

EDIT: Even upside down, I think it is smoother.

Mmmm.. Decisions decisions. I'm after a 2 piece and a 4 piece grinder. The 2 piece will be a SCS mini as that will fit nicely in my solo VapeCase with 2 Jyars. I would like a SCS 4 piece just to have the convenience of grinding a stem or two worth and sucking it up without fussing around or making a mess. I was thinking a mini or a medium but if the large produces the best consistency I might be tempted. It just seems a bit excessive.

I don't want to keep reloading so measure you current grinder and if you are comfortable with that size I would think as long as it is the four piece it will function the same. I can put a full jyarz worth in and boom done. That is assuming you leave it fluffy in the jyarz. Read my post in the jyarz thread about packing down the herb. I used to put in 7 grams won't anymore unless I have to for some reason.

I won't be packing down in the Jyarz, that's for sure. No use spending the big bucks on a grinder that produces a great fluff, only to ruin it by packing. As a matter of fact, I probably won't put ground herb in the Jyarz at all. I'll just grind for each stem as I only do 1 or 2 a week.

I'm using the magic flight nano grinder ATM as I ruined my volcano grinder with 99% ISO and the freebie 4 part from puffitup gives a grind that is not fluffy enough and has bits that are too small as well as bits that are too large.

The nano grinder does one stem easily and could probably do two. On this basis, the SCS mini would do, but I'll probably get the medium. I would consider the large if it produced a better consistency, but if it only comes down to turning a bit smother I'm not fussed.

I think the four piece will be smooth in the medium. I think the issue I have is because of the two piece. The two piece is a nice size if you want I can stack them and put them side to side so you can see the difference. I have a vapeword freebie that I think is the same size as the puffitup IIRC that can be pictured with it for reference. I gave away the PIU one to a member here who didn't have a grinder yet.

Thanks Dreamerr. Don't worry about posting size comparisons for me. I've got a good handle on the sizes - was more interested in the grind quality and you have answered that as best you can. I think the medium should be a pretty safe bet for me. Just doing my best to avoid a case of buyers remorse at the price a good 4 part costs.

Thanks for being ultra helpful as always.

I go 4 piece. I too like to have a chamber for my herb to fall after grinding. It helps to control the grinding. Its more practical to transfer to your jyarz.

As for the kief thing, well, my med scs screen is so tight it lets practically nothing falling through. So my kief place is on my screen instead of the 3rd chamber.

That's good. I would just have a 3 piece SCS if they made them.

Just OT on this, when all I had was my Solo I would pregrind everything. Did that with my SCS grinders and kept 3.5g of ground herb in each Jyar. I literally left ground herb in there for 5-6 weeks without loss of smell, flavor, or moisture.

Thanks for that, mate. I have read your post where you talked about this. I think it's pretty amazing how well even ground herb will stay fresh when stored right.

By the way, have you found any difference in the grind consistency produced by your different sized SCS's?

As long as Im not overloading the mini version (about 1 Solo stem's worth), the grind seems to be about the same.

I use a cheapo 4pcs that does it's job pretty well with a fluffy grind, and I like the kief collecting to have an emergency reserve.
These cost less than 10€ and I don't know what a SCS or something could do better..

I really loved the grind of my Volcano acrylic grinder (guess they're all pretty much the same)
but I was the exact same idiot as Tom Funk :D :D

as I ruined my volcano grinder with 99% ISO
